Data cache prefetching in the L2 is at the forefront of pre-fetching research. In this paper we analyze the impact of virtual page boundaries on these prefetchers. Conservative measurements on real hardware show that 30-50% of consecutive virtual pages are mapped to pages which are not consecutive in physical memory. advanced hardware prefetching techniques that detect access patterns which span virtual page boundaries often end up prefetching data that is from the wrong physical page. Meanwhile, current simulation techniques for evaluating prefetching algorithms assume that all virtual pages are mapped consecutively. We show that not accounting for virtual page boundaries in simulation can lead to overestimates of as much as 29% (9% on average). We also show that a simple prefetch filter can improve performance up to 32% (7% on average) and recover the overestimated performance. This leads to the conclusion that although previous simulations may not have accounted for virtual page boundaries, the results they demonstrate are still attainable and that it is not necessary to simulate virtual page boundaries to get accurate results. However, actual hardware designers should take care to implement a simple filter or else their hardware may not show the same gains in performance as they did in simulation. Copyright 2007 ACM.

In this paper we propose a dialogue game for agents to deliberate over a proposed action. The agents' dialogue moves are defined by a structured set of argument schemes and critical questions (CQs). Thus, a dialogue move is an instantiated scheme (i.e. an argument) or a CQ (i.e. a challenge on the argument instantiated in the scheme). The proposed dialogue game formalises the protocol based exchange of arguments defined in the ProCLAIM model. This model provides a setting for agents to deliberate over whether, given the arguments for and against, a proposed action is justified or not.

The concept of the Sagnac effect in a slow-light medium and resonator structure with a high group dispersion is investigated. It is found that a slow-light medium can be utilized for relative motion sensing, and a slow-light resonator structure is suitable to detect absolute rotation for navigation purposes. It is noted that the high group dispersion leads to a huge enhancement of the rotation sensor's sensitivity in a resonating structure, and an approach to evaluate and design resonator devices with slow-light property is proposed. Moreover, a folded loop-lattice-based structure is numerically simulated to verify the concept. © 2007 Optical Society of America.

Since the current rate control schemes in H.264 do not present the capability of efficient GOP-level bit allocation, the video quality varies greatly for sequences with the scene change or the scene complexity varying from one GOP to another. To overcome the limitation, we propose a novel rate control scheme based on incremental PID algorithm. The incremental PID algorithm is introduced to minimize video quality variations in GOP-level bit allocation. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed rate control scheme, without expensive computational complexity added, decreases the average video quality variations by 15.07%.

In this paper, a variant of the conventional multicasting called geocasting, or location-based multicasting, is presented. The proposed scheme combines any casting, restricted broadcasting, and heal broadcasting to deliver packets to a group of nodes presented in a specific geographic region called geocast region. Also, the proposed scheme utilizes a pheromone-aided multipath algorithm (PPRA) to perform energy-efficient load balancing that increases the network lifetime. We compare the performance of GeoPPRA with well-known geocasting protocol GAMER via simulation. The simulation results show significant reductions of energy consumption, while maintaining comparable delivery ratio defined as the ratio of successfully delivered data packets to the total data packets sent from the source to one of the geocast group members. © 2007 IEEE.

When robots are interacting with humans and other objects, they certainly have a safe distance between them and the object. But how can this distance be optimized when interacting with humans? Will there be any advantages over achieving this? Will it help to improve the condition of robots? Can it be a mere constant distance? How will the humans react? In order to 'humanize' robots, they (robots) should also have certain understating of such emotions that we, humans have. In downlink multiuser systems, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology can be leveraged to increase capacity in fading channels. Knowledge of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is important to obtaining this capacity gain. It is unrealistic to obtain perfect CSIT, but partial CSIT can often be made available by using some practical feedback method. Based on partial CSIT, codebook techniques have been shown to improve performance of MIMO multiuser systems. Unfortunately, the codebook design problem has not been fully investigated. In this paper, we consider a multiuser multiple antenna downlink model with unitary precoding using a codebook consisting of 2 B unitary matrices. The appropriate precoding matrix is chosen from this codebook, which is known to both the basestation and the receivers. By defining and using a carefully chosen distance function, the minimum distance of the codebook is shown to relate to the average sum-rate of the unitary precoded system. From our analysis, a codebook design criterion is developed based on maximizing the minimum distance of the codebook. Then, a framework for constructing the codebook is presented to maximize this minimum distance. Monte Carlo simulation results are given to show the average sum-rate capacity performance of the proposed codebook design. © 2007 IEEE.

The PMSM is inherently electronically controlled and requires rotor position information for proper drives. However, the problems of the space, cost, and reliability of rotor position sensors have motivated research in the area of position sensorless PMSM drives. Numerous rotor position sensorless control techniques have been proposed for PMSM drives, but most rely directly or indirectly on the estimation of the rotor flux linkage vector. The performance of this method is poor due to the voltage distortions caused by the nonlinear behavior of a pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) voltage source inverter (VSI). In this paper, the nonlinearity in a PWM VSI is analyzed and a new online estimation method is proposed to compensate the voltage distortion. To prove effectiveness of the voltage distortion compensation method to the improvement of the rotor position estimation, the proposed method is applied to PMSM drive system and implemented in a digital manner using a digital signal processor. © 2008 IEEE.

The term "color temperature" represents the color of light source or the white point of image displaying devices such as TV and PC monitor. In this paper, our goal is to find an appropriate method of converting the color temperature in order to reproduce the user- preferred color temperature in video displaying devices. In order to achieve the goal, we experiment human's preference tendency towards the color temperature and then propose an adaptive color temperature conversion method reflecting estimated tendency.
