In this paper, a volume management scheme that supports multi-host environments is designed and implemented. The proposed scheme provides various features for enterprise internet services such as online resizing, online migration and an enhanced configuration scheme considering workload access patterns and disk geometry. The SANfs is a shared file system in which multiple hosts can share multiple disks via a storage area network (SAN). SANfs is designed to provide high storage I/O performance and reliability to support the intemet web server, but various features of SANfs are limited by traditional storage management technology;therefore, a volume management scheme for SANfs is required. The designed volume manager in this paper, called SANfs-V M, can maximize the performance of SANfs and provide SANfs with high storage volume scalability and availability. It can provide SANfs with maximum system uptime and unlimited storage capacity using online resizing management. SANfs-VM can also provide the opportunity to use the disk characteristics and access pattems of system workloads by utilizing an enhanced configuration scheme. © PDCS 2003. All rights reserved.

The SCSI or the fibre channel (FC) disk drive, called SCSI-FC disk drive has its own internal queue and internal scheduler which maximize its own throughput. The request service order scheduled by the block device drive in Linux is changed by the disk internal scheduler (DIS) and we call this reordering. The conventional real-time disk schedulers are based on Linux block device driver, and the deadlines of the real-time requests are not guaranteed by the reordering of the DIS. This paper proposes a real-time disk scheduling architecture on Linux which solves the reordering problem. It consists of the global scheduler and the local scheduler. The global scheduler selects the real-time requests, predicts their disk I/O times and determines the order based on the spatial locality. The local scheduler is the DIS controlled by the SCSI-FC device driver. The device driver notifies the DIS that the real-time requests with the earlier deadlines must be served before those with the later deadlines. The local scheduler feeds back the measured disk service time to the global scheduler when a requested disk service completes. We have implemented the proposed multimedia disk scheduler on Linux, and the experimental results show that the deadline misses of periodic requests can be reduced up to 19 times (94.7%) by the proposed method. © 2003 IEEE.

The internet SCSI(iSCSI)[6] disk has been studied as a storage system which can be directly connected to TCP/IP network. We designed and implemented a shared disk following the iSCSI protocol and providing cache consistency. It is named as intelligent iSCSI (i2SCSI) disk. The i2SCSI disk is developed to extend SANfs[2] over TCP/IP-based storage area network and solve the problem of managing a file lock in a centralized lock server by distributing lock manager over the disks. The i2SCSI disk provides cache consistency of all blocks that belong to the disk using a conventional cache consistency method. Due to the limitation of memory size inside disk, file-level locking is hard to implement in the i2SCSI disk. Instead, the i2SCSI disk uses 'contiguous blocks-level locking'. By doing so, memory utilization becomes smaller. A read lock is not required in the i2SCSI disk, which enhances read performance. The prototype of the i2SCSI disk and its client is designed and implemented in Linux 2.4. The experimental environment for the i2SCSI is set up on Linux cluster and performance of the i2SCSI disk is evaluated in the environment. Microbenchmark results show the effect of lock conflict on read/write latency and realistic workload test results show the effect of lock unit size on overall performance. © PDCS 2003. We propose a novel model-based HMM distance computation framework to estimate run-time recognition errors and adapt recognition parameters without the need of using any testing or adaptation data. The key idea is to use HMM distances between competing models to measure the confusability between phones in speech recognition. Starting with a set of simulated models in a given noise condition, the corresponding error rate could be estimated with a smooth approximation of the error count computed form the set of phone distances without using any testing data. By minimizing the estimated error between the desired and simulated models, the target model parameters could also be adjusted without using any adaptation data. Experimental results show that the word errors, estimated with the proposed framework, closely resemble the errors obtained by running actual recognition experiments on a large testing set in a number of adverse conditions. The adapted models also gave better recognition performances than those obtained with environment-matched models, especially in low signal-to-noise conditions.

Single-phase induction motors suffer from low torque average and high torque pulsations. These problems can be overcome by a switching capacitor in series with the stator auxiliary winding. However, the switching of the capacitor requires the motor speed signal over the entire speed range to provide performance optimization in terms of high torque average and low torque pulsations. In this paper a simple speed estimation method for single-phase induction motors is proposed in the stationary reference frame to overcome the problems associated with the use of speed sensors. Based on this method, a sensorless torque optimization system is suggested. The system is then validated by extensive simulation results. The speed estimation method was used in the sensorless control of the motors.

Broken rotor bars in an induction motor create asymmetries and result in abnormal amplitude of the sidebands around the fundamental supply frequency and its harmonics. Applying a spectrum analysis technique on motor current and inspecting the spectrum amplitudes at the broken rotor bar specific frequencies for abnormality is a well-known procedure for broken rotor bar fault detection and diagnosis. Among the spectrum analysis techniques for broken rotor bar fault detection, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) is the most widely used technique. There are other spectrum techniques, which are based on the power spectral density estimates. In this paper we compare the three well-known spectrum analysis methods: FFT, periodogram and Welch's periodogram methods according to their performance on the broken rotor bar fault detection problem. The results indicate that Welch's periodogram method has better fault discrimination capability and is more robust compared to the other two methods. A statistical hypothesis test applied to the results of the three methods depicts the comparison results quantitatively.

The authors present a study of the finite word length (FWL) implementation for digital controller structures with sparseness consideration. A closed-loop stability related measure is derived, taking into account the number of trivial elements in a controller realisation. A practical design procedure is presented, which first obtains a controller realisation that maximises a lower bound of the proposed measure, and then uses a stepwise algorithm to make the realisation sparse. Simulation results show that the proposed design procedure yields computationally efficient controller realisations with an enhanced FWL closed-loop stability performance.

Due to the nonholonomic constraint and restricted mobility, the design of stabilizing control laws for a mobile is a challenging problem. Sliding mode control is a robust design methodology based on a sliding surface and a Lyapunov's stability theorem, where the system uncertainties and external disturbances can be handled under the invariance characteristics of system's sliding condition with guaranteed system stability. In this paper, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the parameters in sliding mode controller for a nonholonomic mobile robot. The effectiveness of the proposed GA based sliding model controller is demonstrated by simulation studies.

Finding a feasible path subject to multiple constraints in a network is an NP-complete problem and has been extensively studied. However, current algorithms suffer either high computational complexity or low success ratio in finding feasible paths. The authors propose a novel extended Bellman–Ford algorithm (EB), from which they present a high-performance algorithm with low computational complexity in finding feasible paths with multiple additive constraints. Through analysis and simulations, it is shown that the algorithm outperforms its contenders in the success rate of finding a feasible path as well as in terms of scalability; the proposed algorithm can achieve almost 100% success ratio as long as a feasible path exists. Furthermore, the worst case computational complexity is only twice that of the Bellman–Ford algorithm.
