Using a communication network, such as an IP network, in the control loop is increasingly becoming the norm. This process of network-based control (NBC) has a potentially profound impact in areas such as: teleoperation, healthcare, military applications, and manufacturing. However, limitations arise as the communication network introduces delay that often degrades or destabilizes the control system. Four methods have been investigated that alleviate the IP network delays to provide stable real-time control. This paper presents the four methodologies, while the companion paper presents a case study on a DC motor with a networked proportional-integral (PI) speed controller with various network delays and noise levels. The four methodologies are gain scheduling middleware (GSM), optimal stochastic methodology, queuing methodology, and robust control methodology. Simulation results show that NBC combined with these techniques can successfully maintain system stability, allowing control of real-time applications. ©2005 IEEE.

The detection of failures is a fundamental issue for fault tolerance in distributed systems. Recently, many people have come to realize that failure detection ought to be provided as some form of generic service, similar to IP address lookup. However, this has not been successful so far;one of the reasons being the fact that classical failure detectors were not designed to satisfy several application requirements simultaneously. More specifically, traditional implementations of failure detectors are often tuned for running over local networks and fail to address some important problems found in wide-area distributed systems with a large number of monitored components. In this paper, we study the quality of service (QoS) of failure detectors. We first present a novel failure detector scheme combined with control theory that can help in solving or optimizing some problems. Furthermore, this paper discusses the design and analysis of implementing a scalable failure detection service for such large wide-area distributed systems considering dynamically adjusting the heartbeat streams, so that it satisfies the bottleneck router requirements. We further show how the online failure detector control algorithm can be used to design a controller, analyze the theoretical aspects of the proposed algorithm and verify its agreement. Simulation results show the efficiency of our scheme in terms of high utilization of the bottleneck link fast response and good stability of the bottleneck router buffer occupancy as well as of the controlled sending rates. In conclusion, the new failure detector algorithm provides a better QoS than an algorithm that is proposed by Stelling et al [1, 2].

The choice of academic program is a crucial selection as this decision plays a major role in enhancing opportunities in career path. Young adolescents often experience indecisions while choosing their academic major, which may lead to uncertainty in future. Therefore, to assist students to find the right field of study, several researches related to personality dynamics have been conducted in recent years to determine correlation between academic fields and personalities of students and the result showed evident association. Consequently, this increases the productivity and success rate in comparison. This study determines the differences amongst the students of three popular academic programs in Bangladesh and envisage the appropriate academic choice for the prospective students by analyzing their personality traits. For this study, we have collected data from a total of 135 participants. We used students' Big5 Personality Factors (Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness), and academic information to develop the prediction model. Using Gaussian Classifier along with 10-fold cross-validation method, we have achieved an accuracy of 91.1%. The findings of this study demonstrate that the proposed framework has a great potential in assisting prospective students to make an informed decision to determine the suitable higher study options while increasing academic motivation ratio. © 2020 IEEE.

We report the behavior of special soliton propagating along the axis of a parity time symmetric (PTS) waveguide, whose real part is a secant-hyperbolic profile. Numerical results show that the swing behavior depends on the amplitude of soliton, its initial input position, and the maximum amplitude of the imaginary part of the PTS profile. © 2012 IEEE.

Modern optoelectronic devices based on hybrid nanocomposite thin films composed of inorganic colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) embedded in an organic conjugated polymer have attracted much scientific attention. The CQDs are solution phase processed nanostructure which are coated with a surface ligand material that is comprised of short, organic molecules to prevent the CQDs from aggregation when placed in solution. These surface ligand materials behave as a thin, insulating layer that has been shown to prevent efficient transfer of excited carriers into and out of the CQD. Therefore, it is important to understand the effect that the surface ligand material has on the optical properties of the nanocomposite materials in order to design more efficient hybrid nanocomposite optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we present a method for calculating the electronic structure such as intraband energy levels and wave functions for CQDs in a nanocomposite thin film structure. The model is verified by comparing the results to reported data in literature. The model which is based on matrix method, causes simplicity in calculation and can easily be applied for more complicated structures. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper reports the development of a new miniature force sensor to measure forces at the tip of a microsurgical instrument in three dimensions with sub-millinewton resolution. This sensor will enable enhanced force feedback during surgical intervention in which a user directly manipulates surgical instruments cooperatively with a forcereflecting robot arm. This "steady-hand" scaled force interaction enables a surgeon to sense millinewton forces between the instrument and delicate body tissues during microsurgery which would otherwise be far below the threshold of human tactile sensing. The magnified force feedback can increase the dexterity of the surgeon and improve safety by preventing large damaging forces from being exerted by the instrument. The design and analysis of the new force sensor is presented with preliminary testing and force scaling control results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

In this paper, a virtual factory using the manufacturing message specification (MMS) companion standard is implemented. The MMS companion standard (9506-3 ∼ 9506-7) and virtual machines are designed and implemented for robot, numerical controller (NC), programmable logic controller (PLC), and process control (PC). Gray scale picture colorization, a research hotspot in the domain of computer vision, seeks to assign reasonable colours to every single pixel of a grayscale picture, enriching the visual information of the coloured picture. Neural networks take grayscale images as input and output colorized images. From a psychological perspective, colours can provide observers with a more pleasant perceptual experience. Old photos can also be coloured, which are important documentary resources for recording real history and restoring the social landscape of the time. Additionally, due to the limitations of imaging mechanisms, most medical images are grayscale. Therefore, research on grayscale image colorization is a task of significant importance. However, existing automatic image colorization systems have issues such as "blurry boundaries", "colour overflow", "inappropriate colour choices" and "incorrect colour regions". This paper proposes a model combining adversarial neural networks and U-Net networks, optimizing them by incorporating global feature fusion modules, Pathway emphasis mechanisms and spatial focus mechanisms. The idea of Markov discriminator was added to the discriminator, and the loss function was optimized. The ultimate investigative conclusions demonstrate that the PSNR and SSIM of the suggested system are 24.45 and 0.941, accordingly, in relation to the preceding protocol, which are 3% and 5% higher than the previous algorithm, and the example has been ameliorated to some degree. And the loss function is modified, and the final algorithm can improve the effect of picture colouring, which encompasses a broad spectrum of application prospects. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. In most super-resolution experiments, because the data set in the real scene cannot meet the quantity requirements, it is necessary to downsample the high-resolution images using the degradation method to obtain the same proportion of low-resolution images. However, because the same degradation method is used to process images, the processing process of low-resolution images is relatively simple, which is easy to cause model solidification in the subsequent training process. After the training is completed, the generalization ability will be generally low due to the single underlying degradation method. This paper uses the SRMD method to build an unsupervised multilevel degradation, and takes advantage of the adduction network generated in unsupervised learning. After extracting image features, it adopts anisotropic Gaussian fuzzy kernel, bi-cubic subsampling and additive Gaussian noise to compose the degradation training data set. Compared with the traditional bi-cubic PNSR, the performance is improved by 5%. The SSIM value is increased by 3%, and the running speed is increased by 7% on average. © 2023 IEEE.

Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) faces significant challenges in achieving high efficiency and stable output power for charging mobile devices like EVs. Using circular pads (CP) as the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) and a self-oscillating controlled inverter, this paper demonstrates a robust WPT system that maintains high constant transfer efficiency and output power in a defined region regardless of coupling coefficient variations without communication between Tx and Rx or control circuits for the receiver side. In contrast to couplers with non-identical Tx and Rx pads and multiple decoupled coils in the Rx pad, the compact CP-CP magnetic coupler with a single identical coil on the Tx and Rx is more robust at a wider transfer distance (air gap) and lateral and rotational misalignment between the Tx and Rx. The proposed 1-kW robust WPT system with up to a 20 cm air gap between the Tx and Rx and up to 12 cm lateral misalignment in all directions at a 15 cm air gap and all degrees of rotational misalignment can tolerate coupling variations and achieve constant output power with 93% constant transfer efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.
