In the specialized domain of brain tumor segmentation, supervised segmentation approaches are hindered by the limited availability of high-quality labeled data, a condition arising from data privacy concerns, significant costs, and ethical issues. In response to this challenge, this paper presents a training framework that adeptly integrates a plug-and-play component, MOD, into current supervised learning models, boosting their efficacy in scenarios with limited data. The MOD consists of an Online Tokenizer and a Dense Predictor, which employs self-distillation and self-modeling on masked patches, promoting swift convergence and efficient representation learning. During the inference phase, the plug-and-play MOD component is excluded, preserving the computational efficiency of the original model without incurring extra processing costs. We substantiated the value of our approach through experiments on leading 3D brain tumor segmentation baselines. Remarkably, models augmented with the MOD consistently showcased superior results, achieving elevated Dice coefficients and HD95 scores on two datasets: BraTS 2021 and MSD 2019 Task-01 Brain Tumor. OpenSlot: Mixed Open-Set Recognition with Object-Centric Learning

Existing open-set recognition (OSR) studies typically assume that each image contains only one class label, with the unknown test set (negative) having a disjoint label space from the known test set (positive), a scenario referred to as full-label shift. This paper introduces the mixed OSR problem, where test images contain multiple class semantics, with both known and unknown classes co-occurring in the negatives, leading to a more complex super-label shift that better reflects real-world scenarios. To tackle this challenge, we propose the OpenSlot framework, based on object-centric learning, which uses slot features to represent diverse class semantics and generate class predictions. The proposed anti-noise slot (ANS) technique helps mitigate the impact of noise (invalid or background) slots during classification training, addressing the semantic misalignment between class predictions and ground truth. We evaluate OpenSlot on both mixed and conventional OSR benchmarks. Without elaborate designs, our method not only excels existing approaches in detecting super-label shifts across OSR tasks, but also achieves state-of-the-art performance on conventional benchmarks. Meanwhile, OpenSlot can localize class objects without using bounding boxes during training, demonstrating competitive performance in open-set object detection and potential for generalization. © 1999-2012 IEEE.

Accurate and efficient diagnosis of COVID-19 remains a significant challenge due to the limitations of current detection methods, such as blood tests and chest scans, which can be time-consuming and error-prone. This study aims to compare the performance of basic and hybrid data mining algorithms in diagnosing COVID-19, using blood test results and clinical information to identify the most effective approach. A dataset of 200 records from suspected and infected COVID-19 patients, with 23 characteristics and one diagnostic class, was analysed. Nine data mining algorithms were tested: four basic algorithms (Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbor) and five hybrid algorithms (Random Forest, AdaBoost, Majority Voting, XGBoost, Bagging). The study also integrated Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to enhance model performance. The Bagging algorithm demonstrated superior performance with an accuracy of 88%, sensitivity of 74%, and F-criterion of 78%. The integration of RSM and ANFIS further showed that a smart model could be developed for efficient pandemic crisis management, achieving up to 100% accuracy when considering key factors like AST, Albumin, and CRP. The findings suggest that Bagging and hybrid data mining algorithms can significantly improve COVID-19 detection, reducing time and errors in identifying exposed individuals. The study highlights the potential of combining machine learning techniques with RSM-ANFIS models for effective pandemic management and decision-making in medical settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

This paper investigates the cooperative link configuration problem for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) in Underwater Acoustic (UWA) sensor networks with Energy Harvesting (EH), which aims to maximize long-term cumulative capacity by jointly optimizing cooperation relay, AUV transmission power, and relay transmission power. Subject to unknown time-varying Channel State Information (CSI), unpredictable stochastic EH, and variable communication topology caused by AUV mobility, the proposed problem is an unknown dynamic combination decision optimization problem. To resist the change of the dynamic UWA communication topology with unknown time-varying CSI and EH, a novel collaborative contextual multi-armed bandit learning framework is proposed, which allows relay nodes to learn cooperatively and enriches the learning information of relays. Consequently, the proposed learning framework can resist the change of the dynamic UWA communication topology efficiently, thereby achieving the superior link configuration quickly. Besides, a learning-rate adjustment rule for the dynamic UWA communication topology is proposed to adaptively balance the exploration-exploitation, thereby avoiding missing the real superior joint relay-power configuration. Finally, simulation results show the significantly superiority of the proposed scheme. © 2015 IEEE.

In this work, we address the challenge of stable and robust time-varying direction-of-arrival (DOA) tracking, where both the DOA trajectory and the number of sources change over time across different scenarios. We formulate the problem as a multi-label classification task and propose a novel solution leveraging Riemannian manifold geometry and advanced neural networks for sequential data processing. Specifically, we introduce the Complex Hermitian Positive Definite embedding Transformer (C-HPD-T) network, which learns statistical representations of covariance matrices. The C-HPD-T consists of an HPD module and a Transformer module. The HPD module learns an appropriate statistical representation and the complex Transformer module models the data temporally. In particular, in the C-HPD-T network, we build a complex singular value decomposition (SVD) module to ensure that complex structure is preserved during the calculation of each layer. Meanwhile, we design a Transformer-based sequential network to capture the temporal relationship of signals and for the time-varying DOAs. Through training the network with varying numbers of moving targets featuring diverse motion trajectories, the network demonstrates excellent performance and robustness against array imperfections. Extensive simulation results demonstrate its superior performance gains compared to existing methods. © 2015 IEEE.

Federated Learning with Cloud-Edge Collaboration (FL-CEC) has emerged as a cutting-edge paradigm in distributed learning. Efficient resource investment incentive mechanisms are crucial to encouraging clients in FL-CEC to contribute the necessary data and computational resources for training. However, existing studies are inadequate in meeting the incentive design requirements under multi-level information-sharing scenarios. Moreover, current works often rely on specific functional relationships between resource investment and global model accuracy. To bridge these gaps, this paper investigates the incentive problem for data and computational resource investment under multi-level information-sharing levels. We design a resource investment incentive mechanism based on a weighted potential game without depending on any specific functional relationship between data investment and model accuracy. Furthermore, we propose four algorithms to solve resource investment strategies for different levels of information sharing. The complexity and convergence rates of the proposed algorithms are thoroughly analyzed. Finally, we construct a simulation incentive platform on the Aliyun. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that the proposed scheme effectively enhances social welfare, and improves collaborative training accuracy and efficiency. © 1968-2012 IEEE.

Characterizing a material's thermo-optic coefficient lays the foundation for optimizing thermal tuning of photonic integrated devices, a key feature for applications in optical communication, sensing, and signal processing. Unlike traditional bulk measurements, determining the thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) in microscale photonic devices offers significant advantages in data processing and provides more direct relevance to real-world device performance. In this work, we characterize the TOC of gallium phosphide (GaP) films using an air-cladded ring resonator, built on a GaP-on-insulator (GaP-OI) architecture. The resonator is fabricated via an optimized "etch-n-transfer" process, which incorporates silicon dioxide hard masks to enhance the precision of pattern transfer and improve the waveguide surface cleanliness, reducing defects and ensuring better device performance. The fabricated resonator exhibits a loaded quality factor of (2.18 ± 0.1)×104 at 1550 nm by using contact lithography, with a waveguide propagation loss of 23.8 ± 0.3 dB/cm. At 780 nm, the propagation loss decreases to 16.7 dB/cm. The resonator also shows a temperature-dependent wavelength shift of 65.8 pm/K, allowing us to extract a TOC of 1.19 × 10−4/K for GaP. This high temperature sensitivity empowers the GaP-OI platform particularly well-suited for rapid thermal turning, which is beneficial for a range of applications including optical sensing, optical signal processing, and highly efficient nonlinear conversion. © 2025 Author(s).

ViSpeak: Visual Instruction Feedback in Streaming Videos

Recent advances in Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs) are primarily focused on offline video understanding. Instead, streaming video understanding poses great challenges to recent models due to its time-sensitive, omni-modal and interactive characteristics. In this work, we aim to extend the streaming video understanding from a new perspective and propose a novel task named Visual Instruction Feedback in which models should be aware of visual contents and learn to extract instructions from them. For example, when users wave their hands to agents, agents should recognize the gesture and start conversations with welcome information. Thus, following instructions in visual modality greatly enhances user-agent interactions. To facilitate research, we define seven key subtasks highly relevant to visual modality and collect the ViSpeak-Instruct dataset for training and the ViSpeak-Bench for evaluation. Further, we propose the ViSpeak model, which is a SOTA streaming video understanding LMM with GPT-4o-level performance on various streaming video understanding benchmarks. After finetuning on our ViSpeak-Instruct dataset, ViSpeak is equipped with basic visual instruction feedback ability, serving as a solid baseline for future research. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. LLMDet: Learning Strong Open-Vocabulary Object Detectors under the Supervision of Large Language Models

Recent open-vocabulary detectors achieve promising performance with abundant region-level annotated data. In this work, we show that an open-vocabulary detector co-training with a large language model by generating image-level detailed captions for each image can further improve performance. To achieve the goal, we first collect a dataset, GroundingCap-1M, wherein each image is accompanied by associated grounding labels and an image-level detailed caption. With this dataset, we finetune an open-vocabulary detector with training objectives including a standard grounding loss and a caption generation loss. We take advantage of a large language model to generate both region-level short captions for each region of interest and image-level long captions for the whole image. Under the supervision of the large language model, the resulting detector, LLMDet, outperforms the baseline by a clear margin, enjoying superior open-vocabulary ability. Further, we show that the improved LLMDet can in turn build a stronger large multi-modal model, achieving mutual benefits. A Hierarchical Semantic Distillation Framework for Open-Vocabulary Object Detection

Open-vocabulary object detection (OVD) aims to detect objects beyond the training annotations, where detectors are usually aligned to a pre-trained vision-language model, e.g., CLIP, to inherit its generalizable recognition ability so that detectors can recognize new or novel objects. However, previous works directly align the feature space with CLIP and fail to learn the semantic knowledge effectively. In this work, we propose a hierarchical semantic distillation framework named HD-OVD to construct a comprehensive distillation process, which exploits generalizable knowledge from the CLIP model in three aspects. In the first hierarchy of HD-OVD, the detector learns fine-grained instance-wise semantics from the CLIP image encoder by modeling relations among single objects in the visual space. Besides, we introduce text space novel-class-aware classification to help the detector assimilate the highly generalizable classwise semantics from the CLIP text encoder, representing the second hierarchy. Lastly, abundant image-wise semantics containing multi-object and their contexts are also distilled by an image-wise contrastive distillation. Benefiting from the elaborated semantic distillation in triple hierarchies, our HD-OVD inherits generalizable recognition ability from CLIP in instance, class, and image levels. Thus, we boost the novel AP on the OV-COCO dataset to 46.4% with a ResNet50 backbone, which outperforms others by a clear margin.
