This paper suggests that there is considerable value in creating precise and formally-defined specifications of processes for carrying out formal verification, and in then subjecting those processes to rigorous analysis, and using the processes to guide the actual performance of formal verification. The paper suggests that some of the value could derive from widening the community of verifiers by having a process definition guide the performance of formal verification by newcomers or those who may be overawed by the complexities of formal verification. The paper also suggests that formally-defined process definitions can be of value both to novices and more experienced verifiers by serving as subjects of both dynamic and static analyses, with these analyses helping to build the confidence of various stakeholder groups (including the verifiers themselves) in the correct performance of the process and hence the correctness of the verification results. This paper is a status report on early work aimed at developing such processes, and demonstrating the feasibility and value of such analyses. The paper provides an example of a formally-defined verification process and suggests some kinds of dynamic and static analyses of the process. The process incorporates specification of both the nominal, ideal process as well as how the process must be iterated in response to such verification contingencies as incorrect assertions, incorrectly stated lemmas, and failed proofs of lemmas. In demonstrating how static analyses of this process can demonstrate that it assures certain kinds of desirable behaviors, the paper demonstrates an approach to providing effective verification guidance that assures sound verification results. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We propose a vision-based highway border detection algorithm using structured Hough voting. Our approach takes advantage of the geometric relationship between highway road borders and highway lane markings. It uses a strategy where a number of trained road border and lane marking detectors are triggered, followed by Hough voting to generate corresponding detection of the border and lane marking. Since the initially triggered detectors usually result in large number of positives, conventional frame-wise Hough voting is not able to always generate robust border and lane marking results. Therefore, we formulate this problem as a joint detection-and-tracking problem under the structured Hough voting model, where tracking refers to exploiting inter-frame structural information to stabilize the detection results. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations show the superiority of the proposed structured Hough voting model over a number of baseline methods.

Distributed and global power control strategies have been successfully applied to cascade of optical amplifiers with the aim of improving circuit OSNR values in WDM networks. For these or similar strategies to achieve their objectives, accurate estimators of the EDFA output power (EOP) are of the essence. These EOP estimators must take into account the amplifier characteristics including unequal power values of the input signals, frequency of each signal and desired target gain for each amplifier. The scope of this paper is to propose and assess the accuracy of three EOP efficient linear estimators. The EOP estimators are part of a framework comprising four modules, which are simple to implement and flexible to use. The proposed estimators are efficient in that they compute EOP estimates in seconds and require only a limited set of EDFA measured data.

In this paper, we will investigate the energy efficient power loading problem in multipleinput multiple-output singular value decomposition (MIMO-SVD) architecture. Most existing power loading schemes are developed on the assumption that a scheduler possesses perfect channel state information (CSI). However, in practice, perfect CSI is not always available. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient power loading scheme for MIMO system under imperfect CSI, taking into account the effects of channel estimation error (CEE). Specifically, we propose two algorithms to maximise the system energy efficiency. One is a global method which can achieve the global optimal solution with high computational complexity;the other is a suboptimal method which can obtain the approximate optimal solution with lower computational complexity. Simulation results validate the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed power loading scheme. Copyright © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Insights into the behavior and preference of mobile device users from their web browsing/application activities are critical components of any successful dynamic content recommendation system, mobile advertisement platform, or web personalization initiative. In this paper we use an unsupervised topic model to understand the interests of the cellular users based upon their browsing profile. In practice, multiple types of distortions are associated with an image quality degradation process. The existing machine learning (ML) based image quality assessment (IQA) approaches generally established a unified model for all distortion types, or each model is trained independently for each distortion type by using single-task learning, which lead to the poor generalization ability of the models as applied to practical image processing. There are often the underlying cross relatedness amongst these single-task learnings in IQA, which is ignored by the previous approaches. To solve this problem, we propose a multi-task learning framework to train IQA models simultaneously across individual tasks each of which concerns one distortion type. These relatedness can be therefore exploited to improve the generalization ability of IQA models from single-task learning. In addition, pairwise image quality rank instead of image quality rating is optimized in learning task. By mapping image quality rank to image quality rating, a novel no-reference (NR) IQA approach can be derived. The experimental results confirm that the proposed Multi-task Rank Learning based IQA (MRLIQ) approach is prominent among all state-of-the-art NR-IQA approaches. © 2015 IEEE.

As an important branch of computational photography, light field photography combines the hardware design of optical system with key algorithm of signal processing quite well. Unlike traditional photography which can only record light ray's two-dimensional position, light field photography system can record four-dimensional position and direction. Therefore, much more image information can be obtained from light field photography. With the development of 3D display technology, light field based autofocus and 3D display technology is becoming more and more popular. In this paper, a light field based new 3D reconstruction algorithm for buildings and office environment is proposed by applying Wavelet Transform and SVM (Support Vector Machine) model to obtain the image focusing quality assessment, along with the Mean Shift Algorithm and Random Field Model to get the depth map of the scene. Firstly, light field image is captured by using a light field camera. Secondly, we use frequency domain digital refocus algorithm to manipulate light field image and obtain several serialized refocused images with different focus. Thirdly, wavelet features are extracted from each refocused image, and then an image focusing quality assessment is conducted by using RBF (Radial Basis Function) kernel based SVM model. Finally, we use Mean Shift algorithm to realize color clustering of the original light field image, and then build MRF (Markov Random Field) Model with color nodes. By iterating the likelihood depth result obtained from real scenario depth calibrations according to image focusing quality assessment, finally the depth map of the scene is reconstructed. Experiments are conducted to prove the feasibility of the proposed 3D reconstructed algorithm based on light field. And the experimental results on real datasets demonstrate good performance of this algorithm.

Social networks have got increasing attention in recent years, and Social Networking Services (SNS), such as QQ, Facebook and Twitter, are among the most popular network applications on the internet. The popularity of these SNS attract more and more researchers to focus on the study of attributes of social network, especially the groups which are ubiquitous in social networks, both to improve current systems and to design new applications of social networks. In this paper, we study statistically 1.4 billion personal social information from QQ and 80 million group social information from QQ, and systemically analysis the distribution of attributes of all these social context data. And then we discover that both the frequency of age and the frequency of age for each gender conform to normal distributions. In addition, we analysis the QQ user registration time and the relationship between digital number of QQ and their age. Moreover, the distribution of the number of users in QQ group conforms to a power-law distribution. Furthermore, as the KL distance between the sample data and the whole data is within 0.1, i.e. the similarity of the sample data and the whole data is high, we can use the results based on the sample data to estimate the properties of the whole data in the integrated QQ network.
