To realize real-time goal-oriented navigation for a mobile robot in unpredictable environments, a fuzzy reactive system is proposed in this paper. Besides the establishment of the fuzzy logic system, this paper focuses on the the physical meaning of the parameters in the fuzzy system, and proposes a systematic method to automatically suppress redundant fuzzy rules from the rule base. Under the control of the proposed system with automatic redundant fuzzy rule removal, the mobile robot can preferably avoid obstacles autonomously, and generate reasonable trajectories toward the target in various situations. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach are demonstrated by simulation and experimental studies.

In this paper, we study the constellation design of quadrature amplitude modulations (QAMs) with odd number of bits per symbol. A square constellation, which adopts symmetrical Gray labeling, is proposed. Simplified mapping and demapping methods are also designed for it. Performance of the proposed square constellation is compared with that of conventional rectangular and cross constellations. As simulation results show, the proposed square constellation obtains better BER performance when channel coding is used in communication systems. Moreover, it achieves much lower realization complexity than cross constellation by using the proposed mapping and demapping method.

We present a simple approach to realize truly random number generator based on measuring the phase noise of a single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser. The true randomness of the quantum phase noise originates from the spontaneous emission of photons and the random bit generation rate is ultimately limited only by the laser linewidth. With the final bit generation rate of 20 Mbit/s, the truly random bit sequence guaranteed by the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics passes the three standard randomness tests (ENT, Diehard, and NIST Statistical Test Suites). Moreover, a continuously generated random bit sequence, with length up to 14 Gbit, is verified by two additional criteria for its true randomness.

This paper introduces, for the first time, Maltese-cross pillar design implemented in a 7 mm × 7 mm × 0.35 mm cavity for high-performance microfabricated preconcentrators (μPCs). This high-aspect ratio design provides more surface area over the previously reported basic geometric shapes. Results showed that Maltese-cross provided 27% increases in performance. Moreover, reducing the pillar spacing from 100 μm to 10 μm and arranging the pillars in staggered fashion have resulted in 145% and 85% increase in performance, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that both surface area and flow pattern contribute significantly to the device performance. These μPCs achieved high adsorption capacity making them suitable for handheld breath analyzers to concentrate and identify trace-level (low ppm) volatile compounds (cancer biomarkers) found in human breath.

Motivated by the growing popularity of multi-robot system and related coordination approaches, this paper surveys and analyzes the relevant literature, including six classification dimensions: system architectures, communication and robotic sensor networks, swarm intelligence and swarm robotics, cooperation among robots, applications, and research projects.
