In live peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming, each peer (child) has a number of supplying parents whose packets have to be scheduled and delivered in time for continuous playback at the child. It is challenging to develop a scheduling algorithm that achieves low delay given heterogeneous bandwidth, propagation delays and available content in all the parents. This paper proposes a novel, simple and effective scheduling scheme called pattern-push. As compared to the traditional mesh-pull, pattern-push does not require continuous buffermap advertisements from the parents, and operates on the packet level instead of the larger segment level. In pattern-push, each parent pushes its packets according to a pattern as indicated by a starting packet ID and a cycle bitmap. Pattern-push requires only minimal feedback from the child, as the pattern only needs to be changed when the child detects a marked change in network conditions or its parents. Simulation results show that pattern-push achieves a significantly lower delay and overhead as compared with both traditional and recent scheduling algorithms proposed in the literature.

Tunable Omnidirectional Surface Plasmon Resonance in Cylindrical Plasmonic Structure

The tunable omnidirectional surface plasmon resonance in the optical range is theoretically demonstrated in a cylindrical plasmonic crystal by using rigorous coupled-wave analysis. The cylindrical plasmonic crystal consists of an infinite chain of two-dimensional cylindrical metal-dlielectric-dielectric-metal structures. The dispersion relation of the cylindrical plasmonic crystal is obtained by calculating the absorptance as a function of a TM- polarized incident plane wave and its in-plane wave vector. The omnidirectional surface plasmon resonance can be tuned from UV region to visible region by adjusting the thickness of the cylindrical dielectric layers. The absorption spectrum of the infinite chain of nanocylinders is also investigated for comparison.

Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high speed, flexible and transparent switching technology. It facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. And it provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS networks is mainly hampered at the network nodes by resource contention. Due to the fact that the random access memory is not available in the optical domain, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Therefore, many contention resolutions are proposed, such as fiber delay lines, wavelength conversion, and deflection routing, etc. These resolutions are focus on the node design. They are increase the complexity of the node. But they can not always take some significant effect and make notable gains in cost-efficiency. In this paper, unlike these schemes are focus on the node design, we proposed a novel link architecture named dual-fiber-link (DFL) for OBS networks. We also proposed a relative media access control protocol. We have developed some scenarios to evaluate this architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed link can decrease packet drop probability in terms of orders of magnitude in OBS networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions. © 2008 SPIE.

The interactions between the optical light and sub-wavelength structures in metal film have sparked great interest on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). One effective way to interpret these phenomena is to make use of the phase shift between the SPP excited and the incident wave. Many theoretical and experimental studies have shown that this shift approximate to π is intrinsic at normal incidence. In this paper, the phase shift at oblique incidence is analyzed and used to interpret the transmission effect for the first time to our knowledge. A simplified 2D scattering formulation using vector finite element method is set up. Simulations show the phase shift can be approximate to π over a large range of incidence angles. With this shift, the conditions for the enhanced or suppressed transmission and the corresponding destructive or constructive interference of SPPs at oblique incidence are achieved. The transmission effect for incidence angle not satisfying these conditions, as well as its potential applications is also discussed. © 2008 SPIE.

The microring resonator was fabricated by using CMOS compatible processes with 1 μm wide waveguides and 400 μm in radius, which has a high Q factor up to 20, 000 and a Free spectrum range of 0.5 nm. A measurement scheme was proposed by using the resonator, a single-wavelength light source and an optical power meter, which has higher system sensitivity than the conventional measurement setup by detecting resonance wavelength shifts with an optical spectrometer. Finally, the resonator was applied to detect glucose concentrations with sensitivity as high as 10-4RIU, which proves its feasible application in liquid sensing areas.

This paper proposes and evaluates an approach to the parallelization, deployment and management of bioinformatics applications that integrates several emerging technologies for distributed computing. The proposed approach uses the MapReduce paradigm to parallelize tools and manage their execution, machine virtualization to encapsulate their execution environments and commonly used data sets into flexibly deployable virtual machines, and network virtualization to connect resources behind firewalls/NATs while preserving the necessary performance and the communication environment. An implementation of this approach is described and used to demonstrate and evaluate the proposed approach. The implementation integrates Hadoop, Virtual Workspaces, and ViNe as the MapReduce, virtual machine and virtual network technologies, respectively, to deploy the commonly used bioinformatics tool NCBI BLAST on a WAN-based test bed consisting of clusters at two distinct locations, the University of Florida and the University of Chicago. This WAN-based implementation, called CloudBLAST, was evaluated against both non-virtualized and LAN-based implementations in order to assess the overheads of machine and network virtualization, which were shown to be insignificant. To compare the proposed approach against an MPI-based solution, CloudBLAST performance was experimentally contrasted against the publicly available mpiBLAST on the same WAN-based test bed. Both versions demonstrated performance gains as the number of available processors increased, with CloudBLAST delivering speedups of 57 against 52.4 of MPI version, when 64 processors on 2 sites were used. The results encourage the use of the proposed approach for the execution of large-scale bioinformatics applications on emerging distributed environments that provide access to computing resources as a service. © 2008 IEEE.

Connectivity limitations of the current Internet pose challenges to e-Science infrastructure, as communication between resources is of key importance for the sharing of hardware, software and data across geographically distributed institutions. To overcome such limitations many overlay networks have been developed. Existing solutions report performance that can keep up with slow wide-area links-however the question remains as to how overlay networks perform on new high-speed Internet connections. This paper characterizes the performance of user-level packet processing, which is at the core of most overlay networks implementations. To this end, building blocks of packet processing software are identified and characterized, and performance of IP forwarders developed in C and Java are compared through extensive measurements. Factors that affect the performance of overlay networks and limitations of existing solutions are characterized, providing insights on possible improvements. Experimental results show the following: to achieve maximum throughput, only a few microseconds (2 to 5) can be spent in virtual network processing;processing of small packets can limit TCP throughput;and overlays need to be carefully architected as encapsulation overheads can be substantial. © 2008 IEEE.
