The planar metamaterial transmission (MTL) line is a consequence of extraordinary permittivity and permeability. As it is known well, the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) has unique property of an infinite-wavelength wave at specific non-zero frequency because of zero permittivity and permeability [1-2]. Recently, the infinite wavelength resonator antenna based on the fundamental infinite wavelength property of artificial epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG) TLs was also presented [3-4]. In this paper, dual band antennas using epsilon zero resonance (EZR) and mu zero resonance (MZR) are presented. Since an infinite wavelength of artificial ENG and MNG TLs occurs when their permittivity and permeability are zero, the resonance frequency does not depend on its electrical length. To design dual-band antennas, two ENG and MNG resonators with different resonance frequency which supports the infinite wavelength are analyzed. The resulting characteristics of dual band antennas using the metamaterial TLs will be presented.

In this paper, the security performance of M-code keying OCDMA system using shifted carrier-hopping prime codes (SCHPC) is quantitatively analyzed. The bit-correct-interception possibilities for tapping individual and multiple users' signals are calculated respectively. It is shown by simulation that the security performance of M-code keying OCDMA system using SCHPC can be slightly enhanced.

This paper presents an approach towards learning enhanced motion control of DC motor, suitable for applications involving repeated iterations of motion trajectories. The overall structure of the control consists of a feedback and a feed-forward components. The model-free learning adaptive feedback control (MFLAC) provides for the main system stabilization and an iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm is proposed to serve as a feedforward compensation to nonlinear and unknown dynamics and disturbances, thereby enhancing the improvement achievable with PID or MFLAC alone. It serves as the basis for simulation study of the proposed control scheme. A comparison of the performance achieved with traditional PID and MFLAC is also provided to highlight the advantages of the additional intelligent feedforward mode.

Virtual Machines are becoming increasingly valuable to resource consolidation and management, providing efficient and secure resource containers, along with desired application execution environments. This paper focuses on the VM-based resource reservation problem, that is, the reservations of CPU, memory and network resources for individual VM instances, as well as for VM clusters. In particular, it considers the scenario where one or several physical servers need to be vacated to start a cluster of VMs for dedicated execution of parallel jobs. VMs provide a primitive for transparently vacating workloads through migration; however, the process of migrating several VMs can be time-consuming and needs to be estimated. To achieve this goal, this paper seeks to provide a model that can characterize the VM migration process and predict its performance, based on a comprehensive experimental analysis. The results show that, given a certain VM's migration time, it is feasible to predict the time for a VM with other configurations, as well as the time for migrating a number of VMs. The paper also shows that migration of VMs in parallel results in shorter aggregate migration times, but with higher per-VM migration latencies. Experimental results also quantify the benefits of buffering the state of migrated VMs in main memory without committing to hard disks.

This paper addresses the problem of evaluating the fault tolerance algorithms and methodologies (FTAMS) designed for quantum circuits, by making use of fault injection techniques. These techniques are inspired from their rich classical counterparts, and were adapted to the quantum computation specific features, including the available error models. Because of their wide spectrum of application, including quantum circuit simulation, and their flexibility in circuit representation (i.e. both behavioral and structural descriptions of a circuit are possible), the hardware description languages (HDLs) appear as the best choice for our simulation experiments. The techniques employed for fault injection are based on simulator commands. The simulation results for the fault-affected circuit were compared to the outputs of a Gold circuit (a faultless circuit) in order to compute the quantum failure rate.

The proposed mutant-based fault injection techniques are inspired from their classical counterparts [T.A. DeLong et al., 1996] [E. Jenn et al., 1994], and were adapted to the specific features of quantum computation, including the available error models [J. P. Hayes et al., 2004] [E. Knill et al., 1997]. The HDLs were employed in order to perform fault injection, due to their capacity of behavioral and structural circuit description, as well as their hierarchical features. Besides providing a much realistic description, the experimental simulated fault injection campaigns provide quantitative means for quantum fault tolerance assessment.

Injection-locked clocking (ILC) has been proposed previously to improve the skew and jitter performance while reducing the power consumption in multi-gigahertz clock distribution networks. This paper presents a new design of the injection-locked oscillator (ILO) suitable for ILC applications. It uses a transformer to generate differential signals and then directly inject them into the ILO core. It also incorporates a switched-capacitor array for frequency tuning and hence digital deskew in ILC. A 4 GHz test chip was designed and fabricated in a 0.18 mum standard digital CMOS. It consists of four ILOs driven by a balanced H-tree. Each ILO consumes less than 1 mW from a 1 V power supply. 5-bit digital deskew achieves 55 ps delay tuning range and 1.8 ps resolution. Measurement shows that only 30 fs cycle-to-cycle jitter degradation was introduced and no phase noise degradation at frequency offset up to 600 kHz.

The integration of multiple predictors promises higher prediction accuracy than the accuracy that can be obtained with a single predictor. The challenge is how to select the best predictor at any given moment. Traditionally, multiple predictors are run in parallel and the one that generates the best result is selected for prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for predictor integration based on the learning of historical predictions. It uses classification algorithms such as k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) based supervised learning to forecast the best predictor for the workload under study. Then only the forecasted best predictor is run for prediction. Our experimental results show that it achieved 20.18% higher best predictor forecasting accuracy than the cumulative MSB based predictor selection approach used in the popular network weather service system. In addition, it outperformed the observed most accurate single predictor in the pool for 44.23% of the performance traces.

The gain modulation characteristics of an 80 nm wide, counter-pumped distributed Raman amplified WDM system has been studied when the pumps are time division multiplexed. When many optical amplifiers are employed in multi-repeater transoceanic systems, the pump is intensity modulated to obtain information about the health of the repeaters. Gain modulation dynamics referring to dynamics of pump modulation transferred to the signal is studied to help make a reasonable choice of pump wavelength for modulation and to provide power compensation if necessary from the resulting power penalty. In this paper, we study using numerical modeling, the effect of time division multiplexed pumping on the gain modulation dynamics in a WDM system. It is found that modulation transfer response is flatter and stronger across the WDM channels when the Raman amplifier pumps are time division multiplexed. The resulting increase in power penalty is determined.
