Grid data management is a challenging task because of the heterogeneous, dynamic and largescale nature of Grid environments. This paper proposes an autonomic Grid data management architecture based on virtualized distributed file systems and WSRF-compliant management services. Autonomic functions are integrated into the services to provide self-managing control over the different entities of Grid-wide file system sessions in accordance with high-level objectives and operate together to automatically achieve the desired data provisioning behaviors. Important autonomic features are designed and implemented in this system in the aspects of cache configuration, data replication and session redirection. Experiments with a prototype demonstrate that this architecture can automatically and substantially improve the performance and reliability of Grid data access.

The inability to perform optimizations based on application-specific information presents a hurdle to the deployment of pervasive LAN file systems across WAN environments. This paper proposes a novel approach addressing this problem through application-tailored caching and consistency in widearea file systems. It leverages widely available Network File System (NFS) deployments without any modifications to kernels nor applications, and employs middleware to dynamically establish Grid-wide Virtual File System (GVFS) sessions with application-tailored cache consistency. Two consistency models are discussed in this paper: a relaxed model based on invalidation polling, and a stronger model based on delegation and callback. Experimental evaluation based on microbenchmarks and scientific applications show that with application-tailored cache consistency, GVFS is able to both improve application runtimes and reduce server load significantly, compared to kernel-level NFS in WAN.

We present an injection-locked divider (ILFD) with a double-balanced structure to generate two signals with tunable phase difference. A circuit prototype was designed and fabricated using a standard 0.18mum digital CMOS technology, and generates dual-phase signals at 4.8-6 GHz. The phase difference of the two output signals can be tuned independently by 55deg, and differentially by 100deg, both centered around quadrature (90deg). The phase noise degradation is negligible

We present an integrated wideband directional coupler for millimeter-wave applications implemented in low-cost silicon technologies. It is constructed using broad-side coupled coplanar waveguides (CPW), taking advantage of available multiple metal layers in silicon technologies. A prototype coupler was designed and fabricated using a commercial 0.18mu digital CMOS technology with low-resistivity epi substrate. It achieves a 10-40 GHz frequency range (3-dB bandwidth) with 7 dB to 10 dB coupling and more than 10 dB directivity. Measurement results match well with electromagnetic simulation

This presentation considers the impact on logic design and computing of the fundamental unreliability of nanoscale device technologies. In general, these technologies will provide implementations of logic gates and circuits where logic levels are “0” or “1” with some probability related to the error rates of gates and interconnect. In this context, reliable circuit design becomes a problem of maximizing the probability of the correct logic levels of the output of the function implemented by the circuit for the relevant inputs. This presentation reviews some recent results and proposes new ideas for the characterization and design of probabilistic logic. Since the early days of computing it has been well known that the design of reliable arbitrary logic circuits is only possible if individual gates have error rates below some threshold which varies with gate functionality. Using bifurcation analysis of probabilistic gate models, thresholds for different types of gates are derived and their implications for logic design are revisited. Similar techniques are used to analyze multi-gate circuits and the functions they implement. The resulting thresholds provide reliability bounds for the circuits. Also considered are several proposed models for either analyzing reliability or maximizing it. Reference is also made to circuits designed to implement probabilistic computations.

The stringent emission mask and interference specifications in ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radios present great challenges for the transceiver architecture design and circuit implementation. This paper proposes to use integrated distributed transversal filters (DTF) for pulse shaping in the transmitter and for narrow-band interference (NBI) suppression in the receiver. Analyses show that an integrated DTF can accurately generate notches at multiple frequencies with tunability and relatively low power consumption. A 7-tap DTF prototype was implemented using a commercial 0.18 mum SiGe BiCMOS technology. Measurement results demonstrate the pulse shaping and interference suppression capabilities of DTFs. The typical power consumption of the prototype is 30 mW

A crosstalk effect in counter-pumped distributed Raman amplifiers (DRAs) with discrete time-division multiplexed (DTDM) pumping is investigated using numerical modeling. We show that the pump repetition frequency has an impact on the pump mediated cross modulation between two channels. Crosstalk effects between channels are shown to be worse in the case of DTDM pumping in comparison with continuous wave (CW) pumping at lower pump repetition frequencies

Application classification techniques based on monitoring and learning of resource usage (e.g. CPU, memory, disk and network) have been proposed to aid in resource scheduling decisions. An important problem that arises in application classifiers is how to decide which subset of numerous performance metrics collected from monitoring tools should be used for the classification. This paper presents an approach based on a probabilistic model (Bayesian Network) to systematically select the representative performance features, which can provide optimal classification accuracy and adapt to changing workloads. Virtual machines (VMs) are used to host the application execution and system-level performance metrics for a VM summarize the application and its host's resource usage. This approach requires no application source code modification nor execution intervention. Results from experiments show that the proposed scheme can effectively select a performance metric subset providing above 90% classification accuracy for a set of benchmark applications.
