Multimedia applications are driving wireless network operators to add high-speed data services such as Edge (E-GPRS), WCDMA (UMTS) and WLAN (IEEE 802.11a,b,g) to the existing network. This creates the need for multi-mode cellular handsets that support a wide range of communication standards, each with a different RF freguency, signal bandwidth, modulation scheme, etc. This in turn generates several design challenges for the analog and digital building blocks of the physical layer. In addition to the above-mentioned protocols, mobile devices often include Bluetooth, GPS, FM-radio and TV services that can work concurrently with data and voice communication. Multi-mode, multi-band, and multi-standard mobile terminals must satisfy all these different reguirements. Sharing and/or switching transceiver building blocks in these handsets is mandatory in order to extend battery life and/or to reduce cost. Only adaptive circuits that are able to reconfigure themselves within the handover time can meet the design reguirements of a single receiver or transmitter covering all the different standards while ensuring seamless inter-interoperability. This paper presents analog and digital base-band circuits that are able to support GSM (with Edge), WCDMA (UMTS), WLAN and Bluetooth using reconfigurable building blocks. The blocks can trade off power consumption for performance on the fly, depending on the standard to be supported and the reguired QoS (Quality of Service) level. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a personal verification method using both face and speech to improve the rate of single biometric verification. False acceptance rate (FAR) and false rejection rate (FRR) have been a fundamental bottleneck of real-time personal verification. The proposed multimodal biometric method is to improve both verification rate and reliability in real-time by overcoming technical limitations of single biometric verification methods. The proposed method uses principal component analysis (PCA) for face recognition and hidden markov model (HMM) for speech recognition. It also uses fuzzy logic for the final decision of personal verification. Based on experimental results, the proposed system can reduce FAR down to 0.0001%, which provides that the proposed method overcomes the limitation of single biometric system and provides stable personal verification in real-time.

In this paper, the service-based architecture of a framework for the management of natural disasters is presented. This proposal combines last trends in the design of Geographic Information systems, namely web service technologies and OGC standards (including the Sensor Web), with Multicriteria Decision Analysis techniques, which enable the incorporation of the expert's knowledge into the system. The framework becomes this way a real Spatial Decision Support System. Research needs identified during the design of the architecture are described in the paper. Finally, the forest fire risk assessment in Galicia is considered as a real scenario for the application of the proposed framework.

The need for error detection and correction techniques is vital in quantum computation, due to the omnipresent nature of quantum errors. No realistic prospect of an operational quantum computational device may be warranted without such mechanisms. Therefore, the fact that error detecting and correcting techniques have been developed has enhanced the feasibility of a potential quantum computer [15] [18]. This paper presents a methodology for improving the fault tolerance of quantum circuits by using the so-called reconfigurable Quantum Gate Arrays (rQGAs). Our solution reduces the problem of stabilizer coding safe recovery to preserving a given quantum configuration state. As shown in this paper's practical example, the configuration register to be protected has a reduced number of qubits, and the overall dependability attribute [2] - reliability measured by the accuracy threshold [15] - is drastically improved. The formal analysis of parallelism and pipelining is performed on an 8-bit add-compare-select element of a Viterbi decoder. The results are quantified through a study of the delay and energy behaviors of gates and complex circuits due to supply scaling and circuit optimization on a modified test setup accounting for routing cost. The energy-throughput relationships of both pipelining and parallelism are characterized in connection to their corresponding depth and degree, showing clear advantages of pipelining over parallelism.

Design guidelines for low- and ultra low-power arithmetic units are presented. We analyze structures for addition in the energy-delay space to determine the most suitable for these regions of operations. This paper demonstrates that the use of more complex high-performance structures combined with scaling of the supply-voltage outperforms traditional low-power oriented designs in the low- and ultra low-power domain.

This paper presents a feature point tracking algorithm using optical flow under the non-prior training active feature model (NPT-AFM) framework. The proposed algorithm mainly focuses on analysis of deformable objects, and provides real-time, robust tracking. The proposed object tracking procedure can be divided into two steps: (i) optical flow-based tracking of feature points and (ii) NPT-AFM for robust tracking. In order to handle occlusion problems in object tracking, feature points inside an object are estimated instead of its shape boundary of the conventional active contour model (ACM) or active shape model (ASM), and are updated as an element of the training set for the AFM. The proposed NPT-AFM framework enables the tracking of occluded objects in complicated background. Experimental results show that the proposed NPT-AFM-based algorithm can track deformable objects in real-time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper describes a scalable approach to the enabling of legacy scientific applications on computing grids using a service-oriented architecture. In the context of this paper grid-enabling means turning an existing application, installed on a grid resource, into a service and generating the application-specific user interfaces to use that application through a Web portal. Scalability is achieved by providing a common abstraction for a category of applications and providing a "generic" application service to wrap those applications as services. The focus of this paper's approach is on grid-enabling "command-oriented" scientific applications. The novel aspect of the approach is that the entire process -from turning an application into a service to the user-interface generation for that application - is done automatically, without requiring coding or grid-system downtime. Portlet technology is used to dynamically generate application-specific interfaces. Further, the approach makes it possible to customize the applications for different user groups by way of simplifying, restricting or composing the functionalities of applications. The approach is useful for building grid portals on which a large number of applications need to be dynamically enabled.
