Formal synthesis and verification of control programs in manufacturing applications are currently undeveloped areas. Today, new control programs are most often debugged on the shop floor, and when formal methods are used, the result is often a control function that is impossible to interpret by the operators. We present a method for synthesis of the control function of a PLC program. By combining supervisory control theory with a hierarchical program structure, in which the control function is separated from the rest of the PLC program, the generated control function combines the benefits of a traditional supervisor, e.g. non-blocking, optimality and flexibility, with simplicity and clearness. The authors report on the recent development of a 2 × 2 RF MEMS switch matrix for high power applications. The RF design and modelling of the switch matrix using full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations are described. The method of fabrication and experimental setup are presented. Results for the recorded RF performance for on and off states are presented. Power handling characteristics of the switch are also examined. Some challenging issues for the development of this type of device are addressed.

High torque pulsation is the major disadvantage of most IPM motor configurations. Choosing proper number of stator slots and winding distribution as well as increasing number of phases are among the possible solutions for reducing torque pulsation. In this paper, five-phase interior permanent magnet motor with fractional-slot stator is studied. It is shown that despite other IPM motors; the proposed five-phase IPM motor with fractional slot has a very low torque pulsation. For comparison purposes, a five-phase IPM motor with 20 stator slots which is a common configuration for four pole five-phase motors is also considered. It is shown that the torque pulsation of the proposed fractional-slot five-phase IPM motor is much lower than the five-phase IPM motor with 20 stator slots. Nonlinear finite element method is used to analyze different machine configuration. A prototype four pole, five-phase IPM motor with 15 stator slots has been built and is used for experimental verification.

This paper investigates the field weakening operation of a five-phase permanent magnet motor. The proposed motor has concentrated windings such that the produced back-EMF is almost trapezoidal. The motor is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus third harmonic of currents. This motor, while generating the same average torque as an equivalent permanent magnet brushless DC motor, overcomes its disadvantages. It is shown that torque producing and flux producing components of current for this motor can be decoupled by using multiple reference frame transformation. Therefore, vector control is easily applicable to the motor. Field weakening algorithm is derived and implemented. This motor benefits from high torque density of a BLDC motor below the rated speed and controllability of PMSM above the rated speed and during the field weakening region. Simulation and experimental results are provided to prove the validity of the superior performance of this drive
