An essential factor in understanding the motor learning capability of humans, is the coordinate transformation learning of the visual feedback controller. Although a number of learning models for the visual feedback controller have been proposed, none has been able to establish a definitive approach. In our previous work, we have suggested a learning model that uses disturbance noise and the feedback error signal to learn the human visual feedback controller's coordinate transformation. However, the model does not fully consider the time delay in the visual feedback control loop. This paper presents a modified learning model taking into account the time delay and the convergence properties of the model. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Currently, several kilometers of interconnects are used to construct a state-of-the-art Si-based integrated circuit, which has up to 8 levels of metallization. The failure mechanisms and reliability of the different layers of metallization are assumed to be the same in circuit-level reliability analysis. Although this may be true in Al interconnects, it may not be so for Cu dual-damascene lines. In this paper, we report on differences in the failure mechanisms between the first (M1) and second (M2) levels of Cu metallization, and how it affects the overall circuit reliability for Cu metallization.

A novel timing characterization for dual-edge triggered flip-flops is presented. This characterization takes into account the real overhead taken from the clock cycle by the flip-flops. Our study shows the correctness of these new metrics when compared against data-to-output delay. An example of the proposed delay characterization and comparison with conventional (data-to-output) metrics for dual-edge flip-flop design is given.

The rationale of authentication has been a topic of study for about a decade and a half. First attempts at formal analysis of authentication protocols were not using logics per se, but were certainly logical. Millen’s Interrogator [Mil84, MCF87] was a Prolog based tool specifically designed for authentication protocol analysis that functioned essentially as a special purpose model checker. Kemmerer used the general purpose formal specification language Ina Jo and an accompanying symbolic execution tool Inatest to specify and analyze protocols [Kem87].

Energy efficiency is an important issue in wireless ad-hoc networks since the battery power of terminals is limited. The energy efficient MAC algorithm is based on reservation and scheduling for wireless ad-hoc networks. In this paper, we drive the optimal threshold energy level for the Pseudo Base Station (PBS) reselection in the energy efficient MAC through mathematical analysis.

Wireless application of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is gaining much attention as a modulation technique for high speed data transmission in various applications due to its good properties against frequency selective fading, intersymbol interference (ISI), and intercarrier interference (ICI). However there are still several issues related to synchronization and multiple access that require more research. We investigate the performance of OFDM transmission through slotted ALOHA multiple access and compare the results to unslotted ALOHA OFDM systems. The results show that the OFDM slotted ALOHA technique has advantages in SNR, throughput, and frame synchronization performance compared to unslotted ALOHA with OFDM, which suggests slotted ALOHA as a candidate for multiple access for OFDM wireless communication applications.

Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) and multiprotocol lambda switching (MP/spl lambda/S) are at the forefront of next generation wide area network routing/switching technologies. Both technologies show promising functionalities and capabilities. While MPLS and MP/spl lambda/S provide similar functions, they excel or are limited in areas due to their inherent designs and functional domains. Even though the two technologies show strengths and limitations, their coexistence will result in significant redundancy in several technical aspects. This paper investigates the similarities and differences of MPLS and MP/spl lambda/S providing an analytical and comprehensive comparison within service and coverage, resource utilization, and restoration speed and complexity.

On of the major limiting factors for the development of hardware platforms able to support evolvable hardware principles is the lack of simple and compact in-system dynamic routing strategies. In this paper we shall present a programmable hardware architecture whose internal organization permits to perform dynamic routing processes. The architecture is based on a regular bi-dimensional array of functional cells. A hierarchical layered organization has been provided for these cells. Specific routing resources have been included in one of these layers, so that they permit to construct in an incremental way routing paths among the functional cells. The dynamic routing strategy is based on a replication process that is able to connect a source cell with various target cells. One of the major advantages of the proposed routing strategy lies in the fact that its complexity grows only linearly with the array size. Furthermore it is scalable, accommodating without performance degradation to any array size. Behavioral hardware descriptions haven been created for the functional cells that constitute the array. As the simulation and synthesis results will show, the proposed routing strategy will permit the implementation of actual evolvable hardware principles.

We describe a novel robust approach to enable efficient searching of the type-written text on museum archive cards. Depending on such factors as the state of the typewriter and its ribbon, these text images may be faint with parts of the character missing, or be in heavy type with adjacent characters merging together. Both these problems can make this kind of text hard to read with conventional OCR methods that rely on the use of a limited number of segmentation hypotheses prior to recognition. Our method involves sliding a classifier over the entire word or card image, such that we get a set of recognition hypotheses for each possible window position which gives rise to a large character hypothesis graph. We then apply a graph reduction followed by an efficient graph search method to search for words in the reduced graph. Results so far are promising, with our system achieving 45% word recognition accuracy compared to the 25% achieved by a leading commercial package. However, searching the original larger graphs is much slower but yields 85% accuracy; so further work is needed either in improving the graph reduction method, or in improving the efficiency with which we can search the larger graph.
