Much of human knowledge in cybersecurity is encapsulated within the ever-growing volume of scientific papers. As this textual data continues to expand, the importance of document organization methods becomes increasingly crucial for extracting actionable insights hidden within large text datasets. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) serve as a means to store factual information in a structured manner, providing explicit, interpretable knowledge that includes domain-specific information from the cybersecurity scientific literature. One of the challenges in constructing a KG from scientific literature is the extraction of ontology from unstructured text. In this paper, we address this topic and introduce a method for building a multi-modal KG by extracting structured ontology from scientific papers. We demonstrate this concept in the cybersecurity domain. One modality of the KG represents observable information from the papers, such as the categories in which they were published or the authors. The second modality uncovers latent (hidden) patterns of text extracted through hierarchical and semantic non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), such as named entities, topics or clusters, and keywords. We illustrate this concept by consolidating more than two million scientific papers uploaded to arXiv into the cyber-domain, using hierarchical and semantic NMF, and by building a cyber-domain-specific KG. Binary Bleed: Fast Distributed and Parallel Method for Automatic Model Selection

In several Machine Learning (ML) clustering and dimensionality reduction approaches, such as non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), RESCAL, and K-Means clustering, users must select a hyper-parameter k to define the number of clusters or components that yield an ideal separation of samples or clean clusters. This selection, while difficult, is crucial to avoid overfitting or underfitting the data. Several ML applications use scoring methods (e.g., Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores) to evaluate the cluster pattern stability for a specific k. The score is calculated for different trials over a range of k, and the ideal k is heuristically selected as the value before the model starts overfitting, indicated by a drop or increase in the score resembling an elbow curve plot. While the grid-search method can be used to accurately find a good k value, visiting a range of k can become time-consuming and computationally resource-intensive. In this paper, we introduce the Binary Bleed method based on binary search, which significantly reduces the k search space for these grid-search ML algorithms by truncating the target k values from the search space using a heuristic with thresholding over the scores. Binary Bleed is designed to work with single-node serial, single-node multi-processing, and distributed computing resources. In our experiments, we demonstrate the reduced search space gain over a naive sequential search of the ideal k and the accuracy of the Binary Bleed in identifying the correct k for NMFk, K-Means pyDNMFk, and pyDRESCALk with Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores. Constrained Probabilistic Pareto Dominance for Expensive Constrained Multiobjective Optimization Problems

This paper proposes a new parameterless constraint-handling technique, named constrained probabilistic Pareto dominance (CPPD), for expensive constrained multiobjective optimization problems (CMOPs). In CPPD, when comparing two solutions, in terms of each original objective, we design a new objective for each solution, which is the negative product of two probabilities calculated based on the predicted fitness mean values and the uncertainty information provided by Kriging models: 1) the probability that this solution satisfies all constraints, denoted as PoF, and 2) the probability that this solution is better than the other on the original objective, denoted as PoB. It is evident that for each solution, PoF and PoB indicate its feasibility and its optimality on the corresponding original objective, respectively. Then, Pareto dominance based on new objectives is executed. As a result, both competitive feasible solutions and promising infeasible solutions with good diversity can be preserved by CPPD. These two kinds of solutions can help the population to exploit the located feasible parts and to explore new feasible parts, respectively. Further, based on CPPD, we develop a Pareto-based Kriging-assisted constrained multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (called PEA) to deal with expensive CMOPs with two or three objectives. Finally, PEA is generalized to solve expensive constrained many-objective optimization problems, named PEA+. The effectiveness of CPPD, PEA, and PEA+ is verified by comprehensive experiments. IEEE

Hybrid Near-field and Far-field Localization with Holographic MIMO

Due to its ability to precisely control wireless beams, holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) is expected to be a promising solution to achieve high-accuracy localization. However, as the scale of HMIMO increases to improve beam control capability, the corresponding near-field (NF) region expands, indicating that users may exist in both NF and far-field (FF) regions with different electromagnetic transmission characteristics. As a result, existing methods for pure NF or FF localization are no longer applicable. We consider a hybrid NF and FF localization scenario in this paper, where a base station (BS) locates multiple users in both NF and FF regions with the aid of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is a low-cost implementation of HMIMO. In such a scenario, it is difficult to locate the users and optimize the RIS phase shifts because whether the location of the user is in the NF or FF region is unknown, and the channels of different users are coupled. To tackle this challenge, we propose a RIS-enabled localization method that searches the users in both NF and FF regions and tackles the coupling issue by jointly estimating all user locations. We derive the localization error bound by considering the channel coupling and propose an RIS phase shift optimization algorithm that minimizes the derived bound. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed method and demonstrate the performance gain compared to pure NF and FF techniques. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a clinical imaging technique that gained a lot of attention because it is a non-invasive and radiation-free method. To obtain an inner image of the domain under study, a specific number of electrodes is attached to the surface of the object, then through a pair of electrodes, a low alternative current is injected. Potentials produced by this injection are measured with the remaining electrodes. Based on these boundary voltages measurements, the inner conductivity can be inferred, thus the image is reconstructed. The focus of this paper is to overcome the major weakness of the EIT image reconstruction technique, which is the low spatial resolution of the reconstructed images caused by the non-linearity of EIT inverse problem. This paper considers this problem, an optimization problem that is solved using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) meta-heuristic. A variant of the standard PSO is proposed and validated, first on a circular mesh composed of 686 triangles then on a lung mesh composed of 2707 triangles.

Changes in coal seam hardness cause fluctuations in the feed resistance at the drill bit during the drilling process, leading to unstable feeding speed. This paper proposes a robust dynamic output feedback controller to suppress disturbances caused by the variations in coal seam hardness in the feed system. Firstly, an unknown parameter measuring coal seam hardness is introduced, and an uncertain model of the feeding system is established based on the finite element model of the drill string. By designing weighted functions based on industrial field requirements and constructing a generalized plant, the controller achieves loop shaping, reducing the low-frequency impact of coal seam hardness variations on the feed system and suppressing the systems resonance peak. Simulation results demonstrate that the controller effectively suppresses parameter variations and external disturbances caused by changes in coal seam hardness, achieving stable control of the drilling speed.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, non-ionizing medical imaging method that has been on the rise in biomedical field. For lung monitoring, electrodes are attached around patient's thorax. Several boundary voltages are measured on the surface of these electrodes, which result from the injection of a small alternating current. Based on these measurements, the inner conductivity distribution of the patient's lung can be determined and used for monitoring and diagnosis. EIT can be used for extended periods of time, which makes it ideal for continuous monitoring, especially for intensive care patients. Several stationary EIT-based lung monitoring platforms have been developed for this reason. In this work, however, we propose a web and cloud-based monitoring solution that allows remote access for the doctors and medical staff. The implemented solution provides real-time, continuous monitoring as well as a visualization of extracted lung features that aid the diagnosis, © 2022 IEEE.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) for lung monitoring is a non-ionizing medical imaging technique that is on the rise in biomedical engineering research in the recent decades. It reflects the inner conductivity distribution of biological tissue based on boundary voltages that appear on the electrodes, after injecting an alternating current of a certain amplitude into the human thorax. EIT, however, has a low spatial resolution and is susceptible to errors caused by electrode movement and poor contact quality, which can lead to the generation of blurry images. Post-processing imaging techniques can, in fact, be a beneficial tool for fine-tuning this issue. The focus of this work is to implement a U-NET multi-class semantic segmentation deep learning model to post-process reconstructed EIT thorax images to enhance its characteristics such as contrast, resolution... The model has achieved an overall accuracy of 72.43%. The resulting reconstructed images have reflected the physical changes during the breathing cycle, have deleted artifacts, and have made the shapes of the lungs and heart clearer. © 2022 IEEE.
