With increasing popularity of wireless local area network (WLAN) and emerging real time applications, seamless mobility has become one of the primary concerns. Hence the choice of a proper handoff algorithm is of utmost importance. Previous work suggests that WLAN usage efficiency can act as a good metric to measure the performance of a handoff algorithm. We argue that in a multiple AP scenario, the load on each of the APs, the requested data rate of the mobile terminal (MT) and the soft handover have a significant impact on the usage efficiency. In this paper we present an analytical framework to measure the usage efficiency under both load condition and soft handover for a specific data rate request. Our approach is based on finding the circular region centered around an AP within which the requested data rate can be satisfied. The usage efficiency is then computed based on finding the union of all such circular regions.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology is expected to be the backbone of future communication networks. However, for all its benefits, mmWave communication comes with its fair share of challenges. In this context, the obstacle free strict line-of-sight (LOS) requirement is one of the primary hurdles that has to be crossed. One way to deal with this problem is to densely deploy small range base stations, called gNBs, to overcome outage due to obstacles. Reflectors have been proposed to augment the transmission environment, and reflect mmWaves bypassing the obstacles. Evidently, they can be used to increase the coverage area that do not have LOS with the available gNBs. We argue that considering the placement of gNBs and reflectors independently may lead to suboptimal solution. In this paper, we consider an urban deployment scenario, and attempt to maximally cover it by jointly placing the gNBs and reflectors. Given the hardness of the joint problem, we first develop a set cover based greedy solution and also provide a linear programming (LP) relaxation based solution. With extensive simulations, we show that with fixed number of available gNBs and reflectors to be placed, both our joint placement solutions can achieve a larger coverage compared to an existing approach.

IP values contributed by the distinct design tools in specific design phases, are recognized by observing the signature of the owner of each tool as functional or scan mode output of the fabricated chip, for certain input vector secret to the owner. An existing approach inserts watermark through reordering of single scan chain, and solely identifies the owner of the logic design tool. Here we propose a novel scheme to watermark the recent reconfigurable scan architectures, operating in both scan tree and single scan mode. The signature of the owner of physical design tool along with that of logic design tool can separately be embedded while designing the scan tree and also verified from the packaged chip without conflict using two distinct modes. A bi-objective minimization of overhead in routing and power is supported through our scheme. Experimental results on design overhead and robustness for ISCAS'89 benchmarks are encouraging.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are a potential platform for deploying millimeter wave (mmWave) base stations. Their high spatial flexibility makes them an attractive choice for the deployment in disaster management scenarios, and for offloading in crowded areas. Apart from the stringent propagation requirements of mmWaves, one challenge that has to be addressed is the limited power onboard a UAV, which is used to hover and move the device, and of course, to transmit data. In this paper, we deal with the deployment of UAVs with an aim to minimising their displacement in subsequent time. We take into consideration user mobility, and propose LazyUAV, a Set-Cover based geometric approach to minimise UAV displacement, while maintaining maximal coverage. Via extensive simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

The millimeter-wave (mmWave) device-to-device (D2D) communication is already being employed to satisfy the high datarate demand of the internet-of-things nodes. Using mmWave signals has its own challenges as it suffers from high penetration losses. Therefore, presence of dynamic obstacles further complicates the already hard problem of allocation of channel resources to the demanding nodes. In this work, we have proposed a reinforcement learning (RL) based framework to jointly allocate the frequency channels as well as assign the transmit-powers to the demanding D2D pairs in order to maximize the energy-efficiency in presence of dynamic obstacles. We justify our choice of reward function through a formal proof and also ensure the convergence of the algorithm. Through extensive simulations, we show that our proposed RL framework not only converges, but also outperforms an existing approach.

The channel assignment problem in mobile networks can be modeled as a temporal graph coloring problem where a temporal graph represents a sequence of graphlets generated over a regular interval of time. The cost of coloring a graphlet is defined as a function of number of colors used in the current graphlet and the number of color changes from the previous graphlet. A differential coloring technique is proposed which first finds the minimum number of vertices that requires recoloring and then recolor them. A prediction based and a random coloring based approaches are proposed to reduce the cost. In prediction based approach, we predict a graph which is a supergraph of the graph representing the union of current and next k graphlets and then color it. Whereas, in random coloring we color the graphlets individually. We have shown that both approaches perform better than an existing SNAP algorithm.

In the DSM VLSI technology, wide-spread design reuse to meet customer's requirements in time enhances the probability of infringement of intellectual property (IP) of VLSI physical design. In design storage or during design transmission between two parties, encryption of a design file is a well-known technique to protect a design against hacking, although it takes significantly long time to encrypt large design files. While encryption basically substitutes and shuffles the bits/ASCII values of a file to conceal the contents of the file, the IP value of a design obtained from optimized partitioning, floorplanning and placement can be protected by redistribution of design elements in the modules and exchanging the locations and orientations of the design modules. As security of design through perturbation exploits the basic properties of physical design, this technique is applicable to protect any intermediate phase, not restricted to binary/ASCII GDSII/OASIS file format only. In this paper, encoding moves for various floorplan representations are analyzed in terms of their time and space requirements. Experimental results on MCNC benchmarks are encouraging.

This paper deals with the problem of optimal association of stations (STAs) to access points (APs) for mulicast services in IEEE 802.11 WLAN. In a multicast session, all the subscribed STAs receive the multicast data packet at the same data rate (R min ) from their respective serving APs. A higher value of R min improves the multicast throughput by completing the ongoing multicast session in lesser time. This also improves the unicast throughput as the cycle duration is shared by the unicast and multicast sessions. To provide multicast services to the STAs, we need to select a minimum cardinality subset of APs as the system message overhead depends on this cardinality. However, such a minimum cardinality subset of APs may not be possible to activate simultaneously due to the limited number of available orthogonal frequency channels. In this paper, we develop a combined greedy algorithm that selects a subset of APs with minimum cardinality for which a conflict-free frequency assignment exists and finds an association between the STAs and the selected APs that maximizes the R min value. Through simulation we have shown that the proposed algorithm selects significantly less number of APs for different R min values in comparison to the well-known metrics for multicast association like RSSI, minimum hop-distance, normalized-cost and in-range STA number.

In this paper, we propose a placement method for island-style FPGAs, based on fast yet very good initial placement followed by refinement using ultra-low temperature simulated annealing. The initial placement is the keystone of the method and the steps to obtain it are: top down coarse partitioning, allocation of partitions to regions on FPGA array, placement of logic blocks within each region and finally the IOs. The solutions thus obtained require 66% fewer moves i.e. about 3x speed-up during final iterative refinement by simulated annealing, whereas the quality of solution is on the average within 2% of optimal. The critical path length obtained after routing does not degrade for the set of 9 benchmark circuits

To cope with the exponential growth in wireless traffic to be induced by the advancement of 5G and IoT technologies, higher frequency bands will be in use to achieve high performance. But this will enhance the associated electromagnetic field (EMF) around us and may have harmful effects on all living creatures and the environment, unless necesSARy precautionary measures are followed to limit it. In this paper, we propose an elegant method of band selection with appropriate data rate for multi-hop packet routing, to minimize and also to balance the transmission power and hence the associated EMF effect on us in terms of the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). Theoretical analysis has been presented for linear networks that results an upper bound on the number of hops permitted for a given spectrum band. Simulation results on random networks show that the proposed technique achieves a 30 - 70% improvement in terms of SAR, compared to the conventional direct communication via base station.
