A dimensionality reduction based neural network framework is introduced for uncertainty quantification of time-domain response based on system uncertain design parameters for neuromorphic chips. The proposed method firstly makes use of the singular value decomposition (SVD) method to find the basis functions and corresponding coefficients of time-domain response, of which coefficients are used as a lower dimensional target outputs in neural network model compared with time sampling points prediction. This newly proposed method then develops an integrated neural network structure to simultaneously find the mean and variance of target coefficients with a combined definition of loss function, which can be utilized together with basis functions to construct the prediction interval of time-domain response. A memrisor-based crossbar array is applied in this work to verify the performance of the proposed method with the comparison of Monte Carlo method.

This paper addresses the problem of distributed formation trajectory planning for multi-vehicle systems with collision avoidance among vehicles. Unlike some previous distributed formation trajectory planning methods, our proposed approach offers great flexibility in handling computational tasks for each vehicle when the global formation of all the vehicles changes. It affords the system the ability to adapt to the computational capabilities of the vehicles. Furthermore, global formation constraints can be handled at any selected vehicles. Thus, any formation change can be effectively updated without recomputing all local formations at all the vehicles. To guarantee the above features, we first formulate a dynamic consensus-based optimization problem to achieve desired formations while guaranteeing collision avoidance among vehicles. Then, the optimization problem is effectively solved by ADMM-based or alternating projection-based algorithms, which are also presented. Theoretical analysis is provided not only to ensure the convergence of our method but also to show that the proposed algorithm can surely be implemented in a fully distributed manner. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by a numerical example of a 9-vehicle system.

End-to-end learning from crowds has recently been introduced as an EM-free approach to training deep neural networks directly from noisy crowdsourced annotations. It models the relationship between true labels and annotations with a specific type of neural layer, termed as the crowd layer, which can be trained using pure backpropagation. Parameters of the crowd layer, however, can hardly be interpreted as annotator reliability, as compared with the more principled probabilistic approach. The lack of probabilistic interpretation further prevents extensions of the approach to account for important factors of annotation processes, e.g., instance difficulty. This paper presents SpeeLFC, a structured probabilistic model that incorporates the constraints of probability axioms for parameters of the crowd layer, which allows to explicitly model annotator reliability while benefiting from the end-to-end training of neural networks. Moreover, we propose SpeeLFC-D, which further takes into account instance difficulty. Extensive validation on real-world datasets shows that our methods improve the state-of-the-art. © 2020 Inst. Decision-focused learning (DFL) combines both machine learning and combinatorial optimization so as to enhance the quality of decision-making. In general, DFL adds an optimization layer after the neural network and solves a focused combinatorial optimization problem. The optimization layer is usually based on KKT conditions or surrogate functions. However, the optimizer associated with the DFL is inflexible and requires a large amount of expert knowledge. Furthermore, it has been shown that the optimizer exhibits a lack of robustness and differentiability when confronted with complex tasks, especially in the graph domain. To solve this problem, we study a more generic situation by taking the optimization layer as a black-box operator on graphs. Then, we design a mixed zeroth-order optimization to differentiate the layer. Specifically, we combine DFL with graph neural networks and present a decision-focused graph neural network named ZO4Graph based on a mixed zeroth-order optimizer. Empirically, we conduct extensive experiments compared with two-stage models on community detection. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms its peers.

Traffic congestion is a major threat to transportation sector in every urban city around the world. This causes many adverse effects like, heavy fuel consumption, increased waiting time, pollution, etc. and pose an eminent challenge to the movement of emergency vehicles. To achieve better driving we proceed towards a trending research field called Social Internet of Vehicles (SIoV). A social network paradigm that permits the establishment of social relationships among every vehicle in the network or with any road infrastructure can be radically helpful. This holds as the aim of SIoV, to be beneficial for the drivers, in improving the road safety, avoiding mishaps, and have a friendly-driving environment. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic congestion control with Throughput Maximization scheme based on Social Aspect (D-TMSA) utilizing the social, behavioral and preference-based relationships. Our proposed scheme along with the various social relationship types allocates green signal to maximize the traffic flow passing through an intersection. Simulation results show that the D-TMSA outperforms the existing work by achieving high throughput, lowering the total traveling time and reducing the average waiting time to better the flow of traffic based on their social attributes with each other. © 2020 The Authors. Nowadays, human recognition with biometric characteristic have been investigated in many researchers. However, traditional biometric methods are not always robust against counterfeit and spoof attacks. The challenge of this work is to develop a bimodal biometric system, based on more reliable and robust characteristics against counterfeiting. Indeed, biometric system based on the venous network of the hand gives higher recognition rate compared to other systems. Furthermore, the fusion of two prints minimums the error rate and counterfeits. In our biometric system, the most challenging phase is the feature extraction step. For this, we propose a new feature extraction approach based on the concatenation of the pyramid of Difference of Gaussian (DoG) and Local Line Binary Patterns (LLBP) histograms (H-DoG_LLBP). To evaluate the proposed system, we opted for Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifiers. The experimental study is based on the dorsal hand vein BOSPHORUS database and finger vein MMCBNU_6000 database. Our system presents an area under curve (AUC) equal to 0.99, and 0.001 mean square error (MSE) with ANN, and 0.0042 equal error rate (EER) with SVM.

Containerization is a lightweight application virtualization technology, providing high environmental consistency, operating system distribution portability, and resource isolation. Existing mainstream cloud service providers have prevalently adopted container technologies in their distributed system infrastructures for automated application management. To handle the automation of deployment, maintenance, autoscaling, and networking of containerized applications, container orchestration is proposed as an essential research problem. However, the highly dynamic and diverse feature of cloud workloads and environments considerably raises the complexity of orchestration mechanisms. Machine learning algorithms are accordingly employed by container orchestration systems for behavior modelling and prediction of multi-dimensional performance metrics. Such insights could further improve the quality of resource provisioning decisions in response to the changing workloads under complex environments. In this paper, we present a comprehensive literature review of existing machine learning-based container orchestration approaches. Detailed taxonomies are proposed to classify the current researches by their common features. Moreover, the evolution of machine learning-based container orchestration technologies from the year 2016 to 2021 has been designed based on objectives and metrics. A comparative analysis of the reviewed techniques is conducted according to the proposed taxonomies, with emphasis on their key characteristics. Finally, various open research challenges and potential future directions are highlighted. © 2021, CC0.

Distributed Pinning Set Stabilization of Large-Scale Boolean Networks

In this article, we design the distributed pinning controllers to globally stabilize a Boolean network (BN), specially a sparsely connected large-scale one, towards a preassigned subset of state space through the node-to-node message exchange. Given an appointed state set, system nodes are partitioned into two disjoint parts, which respectively gather the nodes whose states are fixed or arbitrary with respect to the given state set. With such node division, three parts of pinned nodes are selected and the state feedback controllers are accordingly designed such that the resulting BN satisfies three conditions: the states of the other nodes cannot affect the nodal dynamics of fixed-state nodes, the subgraph of network structure induced by the fixed-state nodes is acyclic, and the steady state of the subnetwork induced by the fixed-state nodes lies in the state set given beforehand. If the BN after control is acyclic, the stabilizing time is revealed to be no more than the length of the longest path in the current network structure plus one. This enables us to further design the pinning controllers with the constraint of stabilizing time. Noting that the overall procedure runs in an exponentially increasing time with respect to the largest number of functional variables in the dynamics of pinned nodes, the sparsely-connected large-scale BNs can be well addressed in a reasonable amount of time. Finally, we demonstrate the applications of our theoretical results in a T-LGL survival signal network with 29 nodes and T-cell receptor signaling network with 90 nodes. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence(AI) has significantly impacted photonics, creating a symbiotic relationship that accelerates the development and applications of both fields. From the perspective of AI aiding photonics, deep-learning methods and various intelligent algorithms have been developed for designing complex photonic structures, where traditional design approaches fall short. AI's capability to process and analyze large data sets has enabled the discovery of novel materials, such as for photovoltaics,leading to enhanced light absorption and efficiency. AI is also significantly transforming the field of optical imaging with improved performance. In addition, AI-driven techniques have revolutionized optical communication systems by optimizing signal processing and enhancing the bandwidth and reliability of data transmission. Conversely, the contribution of photonics to AI is equally profound. Photonic technologies offer unparalleled advantages in the development of AI hardware, providing solutions to overcome the bottlenecks of electronic systems. The implementation of photonic neural networks, leveraging the high speed and parallelism of optical computing, demonstrates significant improvements in the processing speed and energy efficiency of AI computations. Furthermore, advancements in optical sensors and imaging technologies not only enrich AI applications with high-quality data but also expand the capabilities of AI in fields such as autonomous vehicles and medical imaging. We provide comprehensive knowledge and a detailed analysis of the current state of the art, addressing both challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI and photonics. The multifaceted interactions between AI and photonics will be explored, illustrating how AI has become an indispensable tool in the development of photonics and how photonics, in turn,facilitates advancements in AI. A self-adaptive approach for managing applications and harnessing renewable energy for sustainable cloud computing

Rapid adoption of Cloud computing for hosting services and its success is primarily attributed to its attractive features such as elasticity, availability and pay-as-you-go pricing model. However, the huge amount of energy consumed by cloud data centers makes it to be one of the fastest growing sources of carbon emissions. Approaches for improving the energy efficiency include enhancing the resource utilization to reduce resource wastage and applying the renewable energy as the energy supply. This work aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the data centers by reducing the usage of brown energy and maximizing the usage of renewable energy. Taking advantage of microservices and renewable energy, we propose a self-adaptive approach for the resource management of interactive workloads and batch workloads. To ensure the quality of service of workloads, a brownout-based algorithm for interactive workloads and a deferring algorithm for batch workloads are proposed. We have implemented the proposed approach in a prototype system and evaluated it with web services under real traces. The results illustrate our approach can reduce the brown energy usage by 21% and improve the renewable energy usage by 10%. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
