We present Lattice Menu, a gaze-based marking menu utilizing a lattice of visual anchors that helps perform accurate gaze pointing for menu item selection. Users who know the location of the desired item can leverage target-assisted gaze gestures for multilevel item selection by looking at visual anchors over the gaze trajectories. Our evaluation showed that Lattice Menu exhibits a considerably low error rate (∼1%) and a quick menu selection time (1.3-1.6 s) for expert usage across various menu structures (4 × 4 × 4 and 6 × 6 × 6) and sizes (8, 10 and 12°). In comparison with a traditional gaze-based marking menu that does not utilize visual targets, Lattice Menu showed remarkably (∼5 times) fewer menu selection errors for expert usage. In a post-interview, all 12 subjects preferred Lattice Menu, and most subjects (8 out of 12) commented that the provisioning of visual targets facilitated more stable menu selections with reduced eye fatigue. © 2022 ACM.

This demonstration presents QuadStretch, a multidimensional skin stretch display that is worn on the forearm for VR interaction. QuadStretch realizes a light and flexible form factor without a large frame that grounds the device on the arm and provides rich haptic feedback through high expressive performance of stretch modality and various stimulation sites around the forearm. In the demonstration, the presenter lets participants experience six VR interaction scenarios with QuadStretch feedback: Boxing, Pistol, Archery, Slingshot, Wings, and Climbing. In each scenario, the user's actions are mapped to the skin stretch parameters and fed back, allowing users to experience QuadStretch's large output space that enables an immersive VR experience. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Serverless computing enables a new way of building and scaling cloud applications by allowing developers to write fine-grained functions. The execution duration of a cloud function is typically short, usually ranging from a few milliseconds to a few seconds. FaaS providers charge users based on the execution duration of cloud functions with a granularity of 1 millisecond. Existing mixed scheduling methods collocate functions with varying execution times, which may prolong their execution duration and lead to unfair charges for FaaS users. To address this problem, we propose a partition scheduling approach, placing functions with varying execution times on different partitions. We introduce Synergy, a solution in serverless computing that leverages a collaboration of central and local scheduling to partition functions and employs suitable scheduling algorithms for these partitions respectively. Synergy also supports the dynamic switching of scheduling algorithms for partitioned nodes to adapt to highly fluctuating loads. We evaluate Synergy using real-world, representative benchmarks. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to state-of-the-art and conventional approaches, Synergy can reduce the average function execution duration by 63%. © 2024 IEEE.

Aquaculture is a significant component of Malaysia's fishery sector and makes a substantial contribution to the country's economy. It is the source of income and employment for the nation. Tilapia fish is one of the main species cultured in the aquaculture industry, as eggs produced by this fish are considered very valuable both in terms of quantity and quality. A standard egg selection procedure to calculate the fish egg properly has not yet been implemented. The process of fish egg selection plays a vital role in determining the accurate count of fish eggs. This study focuses on developing an automated counting system for tilapia fish eggs using an image processing technique concentrating on the watershed algorithm. This algorithm enables the image of the fish eggs to be clustered in shaded colors, thus enabling the total number of fish eggs to be automatically counted. The results show that the automated counting system for tilapia fish eggs works successfully as the accuracy obtained was above 90%. It is believed that an automated counting system can help fish breeders to perform fish egg counting automatically and more effectively and efficiently. © 2023 IEEE.

Effective blood glucose regulation is essential for both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. Finger-prick methods are inconvenient and painful, while continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are costly and require frequent sensor replacements. This paper proposes an innovative approach for continuous real-time blood glucose level estimation using non-invasive physiological signals and ensemble regression techniques. We observed significant differences in the predictive power of individual features and overall model performance between the diabetic and the non-diabetic groups. The best model for the diabetic group achieved better performance (R 2 = 0.50) compared to the best model for the non-diabetic group (R 2 = 0.27). However, when evaluated for clinical accuracy, the non-diabetic models outperformed the diabetic models. The best non -diabetic model had 100% of predictions in the clinically acceptable zones of the Clarke Error Grids (CEG), while the best diabetic model had only 91%. The between-group differences in model performance are likely due to the variations in underlying glucose dynamics between diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. Our findings highlight the necessity of collecting and sharing large multimodal datasets from both diabetic and non-diabetic populations, as well as evaluating glucose prediction models from both mathematical and clinical accuracy.

Contemporaries suffer from more stress and emotional difficulties, but developing practices that allow them to manage and become aware of emotional states has been a challenge. MindTerior is a mental health care game developed for people who occasionally experience mild emotional difficulties. The game contains four mechanisms: measuring players' emotional state, providing game activities that help mitigate certain negative emotions, visualizing players' emotional state and letting players cultivate the game space with customizable items, and completing game events that educate players on how to cope with certain negative emotions. This set of gameplays can allow players to experience effective positive emotional relaxation and to perform gamified mental health care activities. Playtest showed that projecting players' emotional state to a virtual game space is helpful for players to be conscious of their emotional state, and playing gamified activities is helpful for mental health care. Additionally, the game motivated players to practice the equivalent activities in real life. © 2023 Owner/Author.

As the healthcare sector transitions to the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), it promises significant improvements in productivity by streamlining processes, reducing administrative burdens, and automating routine tasks. However, the current authentication methods are vulnerable due to reliance on simple passwords and a lack of additional protective layers, posing a heightened risk of data breaches. Given the significant value of medical data, security measures for medical devices remain inadequate, especially in safeguarding user and device identities against future quantum computing threats. This paper proposes an enhanced authentication protocol aimed at ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of medical data. The protocol validates user and device identities while incorporating post-quantum cryptography to address upcoming challenges posed by quantum technology. © 2024 IEEE.

Shared mobility leverages under-utilized vehicles to offer on-demand transport services by sharing vehicles among users. It strives to match supply with demand via a series of data-intensive opera- tions such as supply prediction and task assignment. However, its full potential is often compromised in practice as most shared mobility platforms operate in isolation, leading to sub-optimal re- source utilization. In this demonstration, we advocate a federated approach to shared mobility, which enhances its effectiveness by enabling optimizations across platforms while retaining their au- tonomy. We develop privacy-preserving operators and incentive mechanisms dedicated to supply prediction and task assignment in shared mobility and implement generic interfaces that support diverse prediction and assignment algorithms. Although large language models (LLMs) trained on extensive multilingual corpora exhibit impressive language transfer, they often fail to respond in the user's desired language due to corpus imbalances, an embarrassingly simple problem known as the language confusion. However, existing solutions like in-context learning and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) have drawbacks: in-context learning consumes context window space, diminishing attention as text lengthens, while SFT requires extensive, labor-intensive data collection. To overcome these limitations, we propose the language-sensitive intervention (LSI), a novel, lightweight, and label-free approach. Specifically, we analyze language confusion from a causal perspective, revealing that the training corpus's language distribution acts as a confounder, disadvantaging languages that are underrepresented in the dataset. Then, we identify a language-sensitive dimension in the LLM's residual stream, i.e., the language vector, which allows us to estimate the average causal effect of prompts on this dimension. During inference, we directly intervene on the language vector to generate responses in the desired *** further advance research on this issue, we introduce a new benchmark that detects language confusion and assesses content quality. Experimental results demonstrate that our method effectively mitigates language confusion without additional complex mechanisms. Internet of Medical Things is the interconnectivity of highly sophisticated medical-grade devices and software applications to work together and provide a new improved version of the healthcare environment in this era. Wearable and standalone devices use sensor technology to exchange medical information from remote areas to health workforces over a wireless network. Apart from being advantageous IoMT faces challenges like safety, cyber security and scalability, interoperability, verification and validation. Interoperability deals with the exchange, interpretation and usage of data delivered through different computerized gadgets without restrictions. Currently, there are numerous government-certified EHR products each of which has different technical, clinical and serviceable capabilities. Being heterogeneous it becomes hard to achieve a single standard interoperability format to exchange data. The pivotal aim of this paper is to understand how interoperability plays an important role in healthcare and different ways through which it can be successfully implemented. © The Electrochemical Society
