In self-caring IT systems, faults are handled proactively, e.g. by slowing down the deterioration of system health thereby effectively avoiding or delaying system failures. This requires health management which entails health monitoring, diagnosis, prognosis, planning of recovery and remediation actions. A brief overview of our prior work, which proposes a general methodology to capture system properties and incorporate health management using Petri nets, is provided. We describe in detail an application of the proposed formal method to the design and development of middleware that can manage the health of a batch-based, job submission system on a virtualized platform. First, we describe how a real world job submission IT system is converted to a Petri net model. Secondly, we show system validation and analysis using this model to understand resource needs of different activities in the IT chain. Thirdly, we describe how the executable model is used as a system manager to control operation and health management of a virtualized test bed. Fourthly, we illustrate the use of a feedback controller to manage health deterioration due to resource depletion in the job-execution stage of the modeled IT chain. Using a proof-of-concept implementation, we show that the early detection and handling of health deteriorations results in significant benefits in terms of cost savings and down time reduction. Experimental results show that our health management framework can be used to effectively prevent job failures, while imposing low overhead to the managed system. We have shown that for a typical workload consisting of jobs that suffer from potential resource depletion faults, our feedback controller can be used to gain useful life that is needed for critical planning and remediation actions in up to 82% of the jobs. © 2010 IEEE.

The ability to define domain names for resources in a collaborative virtual organization is usually reserved to network administrators through centralized domain name servers. We propose SocialDNS, a decentralized, naming service that gives individual collaborators the power to choose the domain names for their resources. Our approach is based on similar concepts of decentralized naming solutions available in local area networks. We enable short-names for resources by limiting the scope for uniqueness. We also employ a rank-based mechanism for dealing with name conflicts. We evaluate our design through graph level analysis to anticipate scope, bandwidth costs and latency. We also conducted experiments involving Amazon EC2 and Planetlab to analyze the latencies in a real world environment. © 2010 ICST.

In this paper, we present simulation results for the bit error rate (BER) performance and the fading penalty of a BPSK subcarrier intensity modulation (BPSK-SIM) free-space optical (FSO) communication link in a log-normal atmospheric turbulence model. The results obtained are based on the Monte-Carlo simulation. Multiple subcarrier modulation schemes offer increased system throughput and require no knowledge of the channel fading in deciding what symbol has been received. In an atmospheric channel with a fading strength σ l 2 of 0.1 obtaining a BER of 10 -6 using a 2-subcarrier system will require a signal-tonoise (SNR) of 23.1 dB. The required SNR increases with the fading strength and at a BER of 10 -9 the fading penalty due to the atmospheric turbulence is ~ 41 dB for σ l 2 = 0.9. The comparative studies of the OOK and BPSK-SIM schemes showed that for similar electrical SNR, BPSK-SIM offered improved performance across all range of turbulence variance.

Social networking sites have enhanced the Web by providing online "communities" where users can easily create identities, establish relationships between identities, and share resources with one another across the Web. The availability of social networking APIs, such as OpenSocial or the Facebook platform, make it possible for third-party developers to tap into these social relationships and design socially-aware applications. In this paper, we describe how social networking groups can be used to help create virtual private computing clusters that consist of nodes spanning different administrative domains and organizations. To demonstrate the feasibility and usage of our approach, we developed a fully functional prototype implementation and present the quantitative results of our virtual private network. Our design integrates virtual machines, peer-to-peer virtual private networks, and the Facebook Platform API, to enable a user community in which we can easily deploy ad-hoc Condor resource pools that are managed through the Web-based Facebook group interface.

This paper presents a new wireless networking technology, wireless mesh networks (WMN), for healthcare. The WMN architecture, characteristics, advantages and its potential applications in healthcare are discussed. Furthermore, a dual-radio WMN testbed, SwanMesh, has been developed to evaluate the applications of WMN in healthcare. This paper presents the architecture, security, and management of SwanMesh. The basic network performance in terms of bandwidth and delays are also evaluated. The test results show the developed network maintained a stable bandwidth after multiple hops. The developed WMN can be used in hospital and community for communication and healthcare. At last, the application of WMN in hospital is envisioned.

Deploying a modern software service usually involves installing several software components, and configuring these components properly to realize the complex interdependencies between them. This process, which accounts for a significant portion of information technology (IT) cost, is complex and error-prone. In this paper, we propose delta configuration - an approach that reduces the cost of software deployment by eliminating a large number of choices on parameter values that administrators have to make during deployment. In delta configuration, the complex software stack of a distributed service is first installed and tested in a test environment. The resulting software images are then captured and used for deployment in production environments. To deploy a software service, we only need to copy these pre-configured software images into a production environment and modify them to account for the difference between the test environment and a production environment. We have implemented a prototype system that achieves software deployment using delta configuration of the configuration state captured inside virtual machines. We perform a case study to demonstrate that our scheme leads to substantial reduction in complexity for the customer, over the traditional software deployment method.

In this paper, we propose a provision of usercentric home photo album system and albuming functions to support it. The main idea of the user-centric photo album is to enable users to organize and browse their photos along the semantically meaningful axes that are situation, personidentity, and category. Experiment results showed that the proposed method would be useful to album photos based on human perception. © IEEE.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised.
