Wide-area overlays of virtual workstations (WOWs) have been shown to provide excellent infrastructure for deploying high throughput computing environments on commodity desktop machines by (1) offering scalability to a large number of nodes, (2) facilitating addition of new nodes even if they are behind NATs/firewalls and (3) supporting unmodified applications and middleware. However, deployment of WOWs from scratch still requires setting up a bootstrapping network and managing centralized DHCP servers for IP address management. In this paper we describe novel techniques that allow multiple users to create independent, isolated virtual IP namespaces for their WOWs without requiring a dedicated bootstrapping infrastructure, and to provision dynamic host configuration (e.g. IP addresses) to unmodified DHCP clients without requiring the setup and management of a central DHCP server. We give qualitative and quantitative arguments to establish the feasibility of our approach.

Motivated by humans' ability to lipread, the visual component is considered to yield information in the speech recognition system. The lip-reading is the perception of the speech purely based on observing the talker lip movements. The major difficulty of the lip- reading system is the extraction of the visual speech descriptors. In fact, to ensure this task it is necessary to carry out an automatic localization and tracking of the labial gestures. We present in this paper a new automatic approach for lip and point of interest localization on a speaker's face based both on the color information of mouth and a geometric model of lips. This hybrid solution makes our method more tolerant to noise and artifacts in the image. Experiments revealed that our lip POI localization approach for lip-reading purpose is promising. The presented results show that our system recognizes 94.64 % of French visemes.

Virtual Machines are becoming increasingly valuable to resource consolidation and management, providing efficient and secure resource containers, along with desired application execution environments. This paper focuses on the VM-based resource reservation problem, that is, the reservations of CPU, memory and network resources for individual VM instances, as well as for VM clusters. In particular, it considers the scenario where one or several physical servers need to be vacated to start a cluster of VMs for dedicated execution of parallel jobs. VMs provide a primitive for transparently vacating workloads through migration; however, the process of migrating several VMs can be time-consuming and needs to be estimated. To achieve this goal, this paper seeks to provide a model that can characterize the VM migration process and predict its performance, based on a comprehensive experimental analysis. The results show that, given a certain VM's migration time, it is feasible to predict the time for a VM with other configurations, as well as the time for migrating a number of VMs. The paper also shows that migration of VMs in parallel results in shorter aggregate migration times, but with higher per-VM migration latencies. Experimental results also quantify the benefits of buffering the state of migrated VMs in main memory without committing to hard disks.

Designing open and distributed systems that can dynamically adapt in a predictable way to unexpected events is a challenging issue still not solved. Achieving this objective is a very complex task since it implies reasoning at run-time, explicitly and in a combined way, on a system's functional and non-functional characteristics. This paper proposes a service-oriented architectural model allowing the dynamic enforcement of formally expressed metadata-based resilience policies. It also describes preliminary dynamic resilience experiments acting as proof of concept. Copyright 2007 ACM.

The integration of multiple predictors promises higher prediction accuracy than the accuracy that can be obtained with a single predictor. The challenge is how to select the best predictor at any given moment. Traditionally, multiple predictors are run in parallel and the one that generates the best result is selected for prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for predictor integration based on the learning of historical predictions. It uses classification algorithms such as k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) based supervised learning to forecast the best predictor for the workload under study. Then only the forecasted best predictor is run for prediction. Our experimental results show that it achieved 20.18% higher best predictor forecasting accuracy than the cumulative MSB based predictor selection approach used in the popular network weather service system. In addition, it outperformed the observed most accurate single predictor in the pool for 44.23% of the performance traces.

Differential optical flow methods are widely used within the computer vision community. They are classified as being either local, as in the Lucas-Kanade method, or global, as in the Horn-Schunck technique. As the physical dynamics of an object is inherently coupled into the behavior of its image in the video stream, in this paper, we use such dynamic parameter information in calculating optical flow when tracking a moving object using a video stream. Indeed, we use a modified error function in the minimization that contains physical parameter information. Further, the refined estimates of optical flow is used for better estimation of the physical parameters of the object in the simultaneous estimation of optical flow and object state(SEOS).

This paper presents a nanoscale to microscale interface for crossbar based memory architectures based on multi-stage memory mappers. By designing each stage carefully and by adding sufficient number of stages the total interface module size can be reduced to a size that is 3% to 5% the size of a one-stage mapper implemented in microscale. Thus most of the area advantage in using nanoscale memories can be retained. This architecture is also technology-independent and fault-tolerant. We have developed a model which relates the various design parameters to the size of the interface module and examined these design issues in depth. © 2006 IEEE.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have mostly focused on task oriented networking, where networks are constructed for single applications, I.e. file-sharing, DNS caching, etc. In this work, we Introduce IPOP, a system for creating virtual IP networks on top of a P2P overlay. IPOP enables seamless access to Grid resources spanning multiple domains by aggregating them Into a virtual IP network that Is completely Isolated from the physical network. The virtual IP network provided by IPOP supports deployment of existing IP-based protocols over a robust, self-configuring P2P overlay. We present Implementation details as well as experimental measurement results taken from LAN, WAN, and Planet-Lab tests. © 2006 IEEE.

Actually several domains 'general public' are concerned by the utility of visual speech information such as e-learning, Tele-assistance, Human-Machine interaction, etc. The visual information helpfulness is more imperative among people with special needs. We can imagine for example, a dependant people ordered his machine with an easy lip movement or by a simple syllable pronunciation. More than, hard of hearing people normally compensate for their hearing problems by lip-reading as well as listening to the person they are talking to. Therefore, it's very important to create an automatic lip-reading system that resolve partially people hearing problem. We presents in this paper a new hybrid approach named ALiFE to automatically localize lipfeature points in the speaker's face and to carry out a spatial-temporal tracking of these points. ALiFE prototype is evaluated with a multiple speakers under natural conditions. In order to approve our lipfeature extraction approach, we have created a specific audio-visual corpus. The final results show the diferent configuration of the mouth through visemes. Later on these visemes will be associated to relatively precise physical measures. © 2006 IEEE.

This presentation considers the impact on logic design and computing of the fundamental unreliability of nanoscale device technologies. In general, these technologies will provide implementations of logic gates and circuits where logic levels are "0" or "1" with some probability related to the error rates of gates and interconnect. In this context, reliable circuit design becomes a problem of maximizing the probability of the correct logic levels of the output of the function implemented by the circuit for the relevant inputs. This presentation reviews some recent results and proposes new ideas for the characterization and design of probabilistic logic. Since the early days of computing it has been well known that the design of reliable arbitrary logic circuits is only possible if individual gates have error rates below some threshold which varies with gate functionality. Using bifurcation analysis of probabilistic gate models, thresholds for different types of gates are derived and their implications for logic design are revisited. Similar techniques are used to analyze multi-gate circuits and the functions they implement. The resulting thresholds provide reliability bounds for the circuits. Also considered are several proposed models for either analyzing reliability or maximizing it. Reference is also made to circuits designed to implement probabilistic computations. © 2006 IEEE.
