A novel integrated wireless powered sensing and communication (IWPSAC) framework is proposed. Specifically, a multi-antenna transmitter utilizes a radar signal for sensing targets while enabling multiple Internet of Things (IoT) devices to harvest energy from the signal, each of which employs the collected energy to upload information to an access point (AP). Our setup further considers a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to integrate sensing, wireless energy transfer (WET) and wireless information transfer (WIT) by optimizing the phase shifts. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum of the communication throughput and the beampattern gain by jointly designing the energy beamforming, transmission time scheduling and RIS phase shifts. The presence of multiple coupled variables in the formulated problem renders the optimization problem non-jointly convex. To address its non-convexity, we first derive a closed-form expression for the optimal RIS phase shifts in the WIT phase. Then, an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to solve the tradeoff problem iteratively. Concretely, this involves alternating the design of the energy beamforming and the RIS phase shifts for sensing/WET by leveraging the semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation method. To overcome the high complexity introduced by the SDP, we introduce a low complexity AO algorithm that derives the optimal solutions for energy beamforming, transmission time scheduling, and sensing/WET phase shift using successive convex approximation (SCA), Lagrangian duality methods, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, and the element-wise block coordinate descent (EBCD) approach. Simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms and underscore the superior benefits of the RIS compared to baseline schemes. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder globally. The eye’s retina is an extension of the brain and has great potential in PD screening. Recent studies have suggested that texture features extracted from retinal layers can be adopted as biomarkers for PD diagnosis under optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. Frequency domain learning techniques can enhance the feature representations of deep neural networks (DNNs) by decomposing frequency components involving rich texture features. Additionally, previous works have not exploited texture features for automated PD screening in OCT. Motivated by the above analysis, we propose a novel Adaptive Wavelet Filter (AWF) that serves as the Practical Texture Feature Amplifier to fully leverage the merits of texture features to boost the PD screening performance of DNNs with the aid of frequency domain learning. Specifically, AWF first enhances texture feature representation diversities via channel mixer, then emphasizes informative texture feature representations with the well-designed adaptive wavelet filtering token mixer. By combining the AWFs with the DNN stem, AWFNet is constructed for automated PD screening. Additionally, we introduce a novel Balanced Confidence (BC) Loss by mining the potential of sample-wise predicted probabilities of all classes and class frequency prior, to further boost the PD screening performance and trustworthiness of AWFNet. The extensive experiments manifest the superiority of our AWFNet and BC over state-of-the-art methods in terms of PD screening performance and trustworthiness. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Adaptive moment estimation (Adam), as a Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) variant, has gained widespread popularity in federated learning (FL) due to its fast convergence. However, federated Adam (FedAdam) algorithms suffer from a threefold increase in uplink communication overhead compared to federated SGD (FedSGD) algorithms, which arises from the necessity to transmit both local model updates and first and second moment estimates from distributed devices to the centralized server for aggregation. Driven by this issue, we propose a novel sparse FedAdam algorithm called FedAdam-SSM, wherein distributed devices sparsify the updates of local model parameters and moment estimates and subsequently upload the sparse representations to the centralized server. To further reduce the communication overhead, the updates of local model parameters and moment estimates incorporate a shared sparse mask (SSM) into the sparsification process, eliminating the need for three separate sparse masks. Theoretically, we develop an upper bound on the divergence between the local model trained by FedAdam-SSM and the desired model trained by centralized Adam, which is related to sparsification error and imbalanced data distribution. By minimizing the divergence bound between the model trained by FedAdam-SSM and centralized Adam, we optimize the SSM to mitigate the learning performance degradation caused by sparsification error. Additionally, we provide convergence bounds for FedAdam-SSM in both convex and non-convex objective function settings, and investigate the impact of local epoch, learning rate and sparsification ratio on the convergence rate of FedAdam-SSM. Experimental results show that FedAdam-SSM outperforms baselines in terms of convergence rate (over 1.1× faster than the sparse FedAdam baselines) and test accuracy (over 14.5% ahead of the quantized FedAdam baselines). In this paper, the problem of maximizing the sum of data rates of all users in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter wave multicast multiple-input multiple-output communication system is studied. In the considered model, one IRS is deployed to assist the communication from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to the multi-antenna users that are clustered into several groups. Our goal is to maximize the sum rate of all users by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming matrices of the BS, the receive beamforming matrices of the users, and the phase shifts of the IRS. To solve this non-convex problem, we first use a block diagonalization method to represent the beamforming matrices of the BS and the users by the phase shifts of the IRS. Then, substituting the expressions of the beamforming matrices of the BS and the users, the original sum-rate maximization problem can be transformed into a problem that only needs to optimize the phase shifts of the IRS. To solve the transformed problem, a manifold method is used. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve up to 28.6% gain in terms of the sum rate of all users compared to the algorithm that optimizes the hybrid beamforming matrices of the BS and the users using our proposed scheme and randomly determines the phase shifts of the IRS. We use a genetic algorithm (GA) as a design aid for determining the optimal provisioning of entangled photon spectrum in flex-grid quantum networks with arbitrary numbers of channels and users. After introducing a general model for entanglement distribution based on frequency-polarization hyperentangled biphotons, we derive upper bounds on fidelity and entangled bit rate for networks comprising one-to-one user connections. Simple conditions based on user detector quality and link efficiencies are found that determine whether entanglement is possible. We successfully apply a GA to find optimal resource allocations in four different representative network scenarios and validate features of our model experimentally in a quantum local area network in deployed fiber. For people who ardently love painting but unfortunately have visual impairments, holding a paintbrush to create a work is a very difficult task. People in this special group are eager to pick up the paintbrush, like Leonardo da Vinci, to create and make full use of their own talents. Therefore, to maximally bridge this gap, we propose a painting navigation system to assist blind people in painting and artistic creation. The proposed system is composed of cognitive system and guidance system. The system adopts drawing board positioning based on QR code, brush navigation based on target detection and bush real-time positioning. Meanwhile, this paper uses human-computer interaction on the basis of voice and a simple but efficient position information coding rule. In addition, we design a criterion to efficiently judge whether the brush reaches the target or not. According to the experimental results, the thermal curves extracted from the faces of testers show that it is relatively well accepted by blindfolded and even blind testers. With the prompt frequency of 1s, the painting navigation system performs best with the completion degree of 89% ± 8.37% and overflow degree of 347% ± 162.14%. Meanwhile, the excellent and good types of brush tip trajectory account for 74%, and the relative movement distance is 4.21 ± 2.51. This work demonstrates that it is practicable for the blind people to feel the world through the brush in their hands. In the future, we plan to deploy "Angle's Eyes" on the phone to make it more portable. This paper deals with the development of an adaptive robust controller for an Unmanned Aircraft System with variable mass. The goal is to improve trajectory tracking and energy performance while the aircraft mass is gradually reducing due to payload release. To improve the trajectory tracking performance, we propose an algorithm that merges the concepts of least squares method and sliding mode observer for the estimation of the vehicle mass. The nonlinear observer estimates the linear velocities and accelerations, which are further used to obtain the vehicle mass. A robust adaptive pole placement controller based on the Attractive Ellipsoid Method uses this estimation to update the controllers gains due to the mass variation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for performing aerial transportation and deployment of payloads, we present a numerical example comparing the performance of the proposed method with respect to using Proportional Derivative controllers as well as Robust Controllers. © 2021 Chinese Automatic Control Society and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

The convolutional-based methods provide good segmentation performance in the medical image segmentation task. However, those methods have the following challenges when dealing with the edges of the medical images: (1) Previous convolutional-based methods do not focus on the boundary relationship between foreground and background around the segmentation edge, which leads to the degradation of segmentation performance when the edge changes complexly. (2) The inductive bias of the convolutional layer cannot be adapted to complex edge changes and the aggregation of multiple-segmented areas, resulting in its performance improvement mostly limited to segmenting the body of segmented areas instead of the edge. To address these challenges, we propose the CM-MLP framework on MFI (Multi-scale Feature Interaction) block and ACRE (axial context relation encoder) block for accurate segmentation of the edge of medical image. In the MFI block, we propose the cascade multi-scale MLP (Cascade MLP) to process all local information from the deeper layers of the network simultaneously and utilize a cascade multiscale mechanism to fuse discrete local information gradually. Then, the ACRE block is used to make the deep supervision focus on exploring the boundary relationship between foreground and background to modify the edge of the medical image. The segmentation accuracy (Dice) of our proposed CM-MLP framework reaches 96.96%, 96.76%, and 82.54% on three benchmark datasets: CVC-ClinicDB dataset, sub-Kvasir dataset, and our in-house dataset, respectively, which significantly outperform the state-of-the-art method. Recently, generative AI technologies have emerged as a significant advancement in artificial intelligence field, renowned for their language and image generation capabilities. Meantime, space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) is an integral part of future B5G/6G for achieving ubiquitous connectivity. Inspired by this, this article explores an integration of generative AI in SAGIN, focusing on potential applications and case study. We first provide a comprehensive review of SAGIN and generative AI models, highlighting their capabilities and opportunities of their integration. Benefiting from generative AI’s ability to generate useful data and facilitate advanced decision-making processes, it can be applied to various scenarios of SAGIN. Accordingly, we present a brief survey on their integration, including channel modeling and channel state information (CSI) estimation, joint air-space-ground resource allocation, intelligent network deployment, semantic communications, image extraction and processing, security and privacy enhancement. Next, we propose a framework that utilizes a generative diffusion model (GDM) to construct channel information map to enhance quality of service for SAGIN. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Finally, we discuss potential research directions for generative AI-enabled SAGIN. © 2023, CC BY.
