Recently, the development in full-duplex communications has offered a great opportunity to perform simultaneous spectrum sensing and spectrum access in cognitive radio networks. In this paper, we consider a cognitive cellular network, in which the secondary base station (SBS) is a full-duplex device that can simultaneously sense the primary spectrum and transmit to the secondary users. We show that the power allocation of the SBS can affect both the sensing performance and the transmission capacity, and thus, we jointly consider the power allocation problem in the spectrum management process. First, we formulate the considered problem as a 3-dimensional matching problem and prove its NP-hardness. Then, we propose an approximate solution by extending a 2-dimensional matching algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can highly increase the secondary throughput of the SBS, compared with the greedy algorithm and the random algorithm.

Entanglement, one of the central mysteries of quantum mechanics, plays an essential role in numerous tasks of quantum information science. A natural question of both theoretical and experimental importance is whether universal entanglement detection can be accomplished without full state tomography. In this Letter, we prove a no-go theorem that rules out this possibility for nonadaptive schemes that employ single-copy measurements only. We also examine a previously implemented experiment [H. Park et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 230404 (2010)], which claimed to detect entanglement of two-qubit states via adaptive single-copy measurements without full state tomography. In contrast, our simulation and experiment both support the opposite conclusion that the protocol, indeed, leads to full state tomography, which supplements our no-go theorem. These results reveal a fundamental limit of single-copy measurements in entanglement detection and provide a general framework of the detection of other interesting properties of quantum states, such as the positivity of partial transpose and the k-symmetric extendibility.

Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. DEAM: Decoupled, Expressive, Area-Efficient Metadata Cache

Chip multiprocessor presents brand new opportunities for holistic on-chip data and coherence management solutions. An intelligent protocol should be adaptive to the fine-grain accessing behavior. And in terms of storage of metadata, the size of conventional directory grows as the square of the number of processors, making it very expensive in large-scale systems. In this paper, we propose a metadata cache framework to achieve three goals： 1） reducing the latency of data access and coherence activities, 2） saving the storage of metadata, and 3） providing support for other optimization techniques. The metm：lata is implemented with compact structures and tracks the dynamically changing access pattern. The pattern information is used to guide the delegation and replication of decoupled data and metadata to allow fast access. We also use our metadata cache as a building block to enhance stream prefetching. Using detailed execution-driven simulation, we demonstrate that our protocol achieves an average speedup of 1.12X compared with a shared cache protocol with 1/5 of the storage of metadata.

The modular assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles enables the creation of a new class of two-dimensional nanoparticle sheets with novel optical signatures. Despite exciting advances, undeveloped issues still remain in terms of nanoparticle sheet design and potential applications. Here, we present our research work which describes a simplistic and general polymer-based approach to assemble core-shell Au@Ag nanocubes into periodic nanoparticle arrays.[1] These nanocubes are functionalized with polystyrene and spread on the surface of water droplet on a holey copper mesh. Upon water evaporation, the balance between the nanoparticle core-to-core attraction and polystyrene ligand-to-ligand repulsion forces led to the formation of a free-standing lattice-like nanosheet with ultimate thickness limit but macroscopic lateral dimensions. These sheets, which we termed as plasmene, exhibited unique novel properties such as localized gap and propagating plasmonics. Using focused ion beam(FIB) lithography, the superior robustness of these nanosheets allows it to be milled into one-dimensional nanoribbons and folded into geometrically well-defined three-dimensional origami structures such as cubes, hearts and even a ‘flying bird‘. Due to the structural homogeneity, mechanical flexibility and optical transparency of these sheets, we also demonstrated the application of these nanosheets as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS) substrate for chemical detection on topologically complex surfaces such as banknotes and coins.[2,3]

Scientific competitions are becoming more common in many research areas of artificial intelligence and robotics, since they provide a shared testbed for comparing different solutions and enable the exchange of research results. Moreover, they are interesting for general audiences and industries. Currently, many major research areas in artificial intelligence and robotics are organizing multiple-year competitions that are typically associated with scientific conferences. One important aspect of such competitions is that they are organized for many years. This introduces a temporal evolution that is interesting to analyze. However, the problem of evaluating a competition over many years remains unaddressed. We believe that this issue is critical to properly fuel changes over the years and measure the results of these decisions. Therefore, this article focuses on the analysis and the results of evolving competitions. In this article, we present the [email protected] competition, which is the largest worldwide competition for domestic service robots, and evaluate its progress over the past seven years. We show how the definition of a proper scoring system allows for desired functionalities to be related to tasks and how the resulting analysis fuels subsequent changes to achieve general and robust solutions implemented by the teams. Our results show not only the steadily increasing complexity of the tasks that [email protected] robots can solve but also the increased performance for all of the functionalities addressed in the competition. We believe that the methodology used in [email protected] for evaluating competition advances and for stimulating changes can be applied and extended to other robotic competitions as well as to multi-year research projects involving Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
