This paper addresses the need of semantic component in the grid environment to discover and describe the grid resources semantically. We propose semantic grid architecture by introducing a knowledge layer at the top of Gridbus broker architecture and thereby enabling broker to discover resources semantically. The semantic component in the knowledge layer enables semantic description of grid resources with the help of ontology template. The ontology template has been created using Protege-OWL editor for different types of computing resources in the grid environment. The Globus Toolkit's MDS is used to gather grid resource information and Protege-OWL libraries are used to dynamically create knowledge base of grid resources. Algernon inference engine is used for interacting with the knowledge base to discover suitable resources.

In this paper, a novel supervised classification approach called collateral representative subspace projection modeling (C-RSPM) is presented. C-RSPM facilitates schemes for collateral class modeling, class-ambiguity solving, and classification, resulting a multi-class supervised classifier with high detection rate and various operational benefits including low training and classification times and low processing power and memory requirements. In addition, C-RSPM is capable of adaptively selecting nonconsecutive principal dimensions from the statistical information of the training data set to achieve an accurate modeling of a representative subspace. Experimental results have shown that the proposed C-RSPM approach outperforms other supervised classification methods such as SIMCA, C4.5 decision tree, decision table (DT), nearest neighbor (NN), KNN, support vector machine (SVM), I-NN best warping window DTW, I-NN DTW with no warping window, and the well-known classifier boosting method AdaBoost with SVM

The development of effective classification techniques, particularly unsupervised classification, is important for real-world applications since information about the training data before classification is relatively unknown. In this paper, a novel unsupervised classification algorithm is proposed to meet the increasing demand in the domain of network intrusion detection. Our proposed UNPCC (unsupervised principal component classifier) algorithm is a multiclass unsupervised classifier with absolutely no requirements for any a priori class related data information (e.g., the number of classes and the maximum number of instances belonging to each class), and an inherently natural supervised classification scheme, both which present high detection rates and several operational advantages (e.g., lower training time, lower classification time, lower processing power requirement, and lower memory requirement). Experiments have been conducted with the KDD Cup 99 data and network traffic data simulated from our private network testbed, and the promising results demonstrate that our UNPCC algorithm outperforms several well-known supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms

In this research, we propose an integrated and interactive framework to manage and retrieve large scale video archives. The video data are modeled by a hierarchical learning mechanism called HMMM (hierarchical Markov model mediator) and indexed by an innovative semantic video database clustering strategy. The cumulated user feedbacks are reused to update the affinity relationships of the video objects as well as their initial state probabilities. Correspondingly, both the high level semantics and user perceptions are employed in the video clustering strategy. The clustered video database is capable of providing appealing multimedia experience to the users because the modeled multimedia database system can learn the user's preferences and interests interactively

This paper describes a scalable approach to the enabling of legacy scientific applications on computing grids using a service-oriented architecture. In the context of this paper grid-enabling means turning an existing application, installed on a grid resource, into a service and generating the application-specific user interfaces to use that application through a Web portal. Scalability is achieved by providing a common abstraction for a category of applications and providing a "generic" application service to wrap those applications as services. The focus of this paper's approach is on grid-enabling "command-oriented" scientific applications. The novel aspect of the approach is that the entire process -from turning an application into a service to the user-interface generation for that application - is done automatically, without requiring coding or grid-system downtime. Portlet technology is used to dynamically generate application-specific interfaces. Further, the approach makes it possible to customize the applications for different user groups by way of simplifying, restricting or composing the functionalities of applications. The approach is useful for building grid portals on which a large number of applications need to be dynamically enabled.

Grid environments enable users to share nondedicated resources that lack performance guarantees. This paper describes the design of application-centric middleware components to automatically recover from failures and dynamically adapt to grid environments with changing resource availabilities, improving fault-tolerance and performance. The key components of the application-centric approach are a global per-application execution history and an autonomic component that tracks the performance of a job on a grid resource against predictions based on the application execution history, to guide rescheduling decisions. Performance models of unmodified applications built using their execution history are used to predict failure as well as poor performance. A prototype of the proposed approach, an autonomic virtual application manager (AVAM), has been implemented in the context of the In-VIGO grid environment and its effectiveness has been evaluated for applications that generate CPU-intensive jobs with relatively short execution times (ranging from tens of seconds to less than an hour) on resources with highly variable loads - a workload generated by typical educational usage scenarios of In-VIGO-like grid environments. A memory-based learning algorithm is used to build the performance models for CPU-intensive applications that are used to predict the need for rescheduling. Results show that In-VIGO jobs managed by the AVAM consistently meet their execution deadlines under varying load conditions and gracefully recover from unexpected failures

This paper presents novel service-based grid data management middleware that leverages standards defined by WSRF specifications to create and manage dynamic grid file system sessions. A unique aspect of the service is that the sessions it creates can be customized to address application data transfer needs. Application-tailored configurations enable selection of both performance-related features (block-based partial file transfers and/or whole-file transfers, cache parameters and consistency models) and reliability features (file system copy-on-write checkpointing to aid recovery of client-side failures; replication, autonomous failure detection and data access redirection for server-side failures). These enhancements, in addition to cross-domain user identity mapping and encrypted communication, are implemented via user level proxies managed by the service, requiring no changes to existing kernels. Sessions established using the service is mounted as distributed file systems and can be used transparently by unmodified binary applications. The paper analyzes the use of the service to support virtual machine based grid systems and workflow execution, and also reports on the performance and reliability of service managed wide-area file system sessions with experiments based on scientific applications (NanoMOS/Matlab, CHID, GAUSS and SPECseis).
