An ultra-wideband direct chaotic through-wall imaging radar is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The chaotic signal is generated by an improved Colpitis oscillator. Target range information is achieved by the cross-correlation between the time-delayed reflected echo signal and the replica of the transmitted chaotic signal. Two-dimensional image is obtained by synthetic aperture technology and back projection algorithm. Experimental results of single target and double targets show that the proposed chaotic radar system can through 20cm thick wall to detect and locate the target.

Based on the vector diffraction theory, a super-resolution longitudinally polarized optical needle with ultra-long depth of focus(DOF) is generated by tightly focusing a radially polarized beam that is modulated by a self-designed ternary hybrid(phase/amplitude) filter(THF). Both the phase and the amplitude patterns of THF are judiciously optimized by the versatile particle swarm optimization(PSO) searching algorithm. For the focusing configuration with a combination of a high numerical aperture(NA) and the optimized sine-shaped THFs, an optical needle with the full width at half maximum(FWHM) of 0.414λ and the DOF of 7.58λ is accessed, which corresponds to an aspect ratio of 18.3. The demonstrated longitudinally polarized super-resolution light needle with high aspect ratio opens up broad applications in high-density optical data storage, nano-photolithography, super-resolution imaging and high-efficiency particle trapping.

Optical super-resolution effect induced by nonlinear characteristics of graphene oxide films

In this work, we focus on the optical super-resolution effect induced by strong nonlinear saturation absorption(NSA) of graphene oxide(GO) membranes. The third-order optical nonlinearities are characterized by the canonical Z-scan technique under femtosecond laser(wavelength: 800 nm, pulse width: 100 fs) excitation. Through controlling the applied femtosecond laser energy, NSA of the GO films can be tuned continuously. The GO film is placed at the focal plane as a unique amplitude filter to improve the resolution of the focused field. A multi-layer system model is proposed to present the generation of a deep sub-wavelength spot associated with the nonlinearity of GO films. Moreover, the parameter conditions to achieve the best resolution(~λ/6) are determined entirely. The demonstrated results here are useful for high density optical recoding and storage, nanolithography, and super-resolution optical imaging.

Recently biosensors based on silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs) have drawn huge amounts of attention, due to their ultrasensitivity, selectivity, label-free and real-time detection abilities. As people know more and more knowledge of the structure and function of nucleic acid molecules, DNA detection has gained importance increasingly. Here, we briefly summarize major fabrication methods in synthesising SiNW-FETs and selectively describe some applications of SiNW-FET biosensors in DNA detection over the past few years. Some key results from each article are summarized, involving the concept and mechanism behind each sensor, with the aim of stimulating more efforts in developing SiNW-FET biosensors for detecting DNA. © 2012 Crown Copyright.

An ideal holographic 3D display should have the characteristics of large viewing angle,full color,and low speckle ***,the viewing angle of the holographic 3D display is usually limited by existing strategies,which vastly hinders its extensive *** this paper,a large viewing angle holographic 3D display system based on maximum diffraction modulation is *** core of the proposed system comprises the spatial light modulators(SLMs)and liquid crystal *** also present a new feasible scheme for the realization of large viewing angle holographic 3D *** is achieved by considering the maximum diffraction angle of SLM as the limited diffraction modulation range of each image *** doing so,we could not only give access to the maximum hologram size of the object,but also tune the reconstructed image of secondary diffraction by using a self-engineered liquid crystal *** importantly,the proposed maximum diffraction modulation scheme enables the viewing angle of the proposed system to be enlarged to 73.4°.The proposed system has huge application potential in the fields such as education,culture,and entertainment.

Active Queue Management (AQM) policies provide an early indication of incipient congestion to the source. In this paper, we propose a new AQM policy that predicts the instantaneous queue length at next time instant using adaptive filtering technique. To use the algorithm in fast routers, we reduce its computational complexity using a direct method to compute the manipulating signals. We show that adaptive congestion estimation is able to control the oscillations in the instantaneous queue length. We compare the performance of our method with respect to other well-known AQM methods such as RED and PI which are also simulated by MATlab. We also compare the computational complexity of these algorithms with each other. © ICROS.

In the welding process, droplet detachment regularity is important for a good welding quality. The frequency of detachment is one of influential indices for assessing the quality of GMAW in the globular transfer mode. In this paper, a relationship is estimated for measuring droplet detachment frequency in the globular GMAW. The droplet detachment frequency is estimated with a curve fitting by the least squares error (LSE) method. By using short time frequency transform (STFT) we can extract the frequency contents from the mass of drop that is one of the states in the welding model. ©ICROS.

The Effect of Fractional Order on Oscillatory Behavior of Scalar Fractional Delay systems of Neutral Type

The undamped oscillations of a scalar fractional neutral system are studied in this paper. For this purpose, it is proved that this kind of systems can have the oscillatory behavior. The necessary and sufficient condition is proposed to determine that there exists a delay value for which the system oscillates. The frequency, amplitude and required delay for the undamped oscillations depend on the fractional order. However, the behavior of dependencies is not specified. Indeed, when the system has oscillatory behavior, it is bounded-input bounded-output stable for delay less than the required delay. Moreover, when the order is approaching to an integer value, the necessary and sufficient condition is proposed to determine that the system can oscillate with the bounded value of delay. The obtained results are verified with respect to the classical theorems. Finally, two numerical examples demonstrate the proposed conditions.

In previous study, many single-function static/quasi-static magnetic devices, such as cloak and concentrator, have been designed base on transformation optics. However, few have explored devices capable of simultaneously generating two different functions on the static/quasi-static magnetic field. In this study, we propose a dual-function quasi-static magnetic device, which can create a concealed region and concentrated region for quasi-static magnetic field simultaneously. The dual-function quasi-static magnetic device is designed via twice extreme spatial stretching transformation and magnetic null medium, which can be realized by using arrays of superconductors and ferromagnetic materials in specific arrangement. The simulated results verify the performance of the proposed dual-function quasi-static magnetic device, which can simultaneously achieve cloaking and concentrating effect for the magnetic field from DC to 1000 Hz. The quasi-static magnetic field can be enhanced 9 times than the background magnetic field when the side lengths of the internal square pillar and external square pillar of the proposed structure are selected as a = 10 mm and b = 90 mm, respectively. Moreover, the concentrating ratio obtained from theoretical calculation fits well with the results obtained through numerical simulation. The dual-function quasi-static magnetic device designed in this study may have essential application in medical testing for special occasions. © 2024 IEEE.
