Parallelizing metaheuristics has become a common practice considering the computation power and resources available nowadays. The aim of parallelizing a metaheuristic is either to increase the quality of the generated output, given a fixed computation time, or to reduce the required time in generating an output. In this work, we parallelize one of the best-performing ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms and apply it to the electric vehicle routing problem (EVRP). EVRP is more challenging than the conventional vehicle routing problem, as with the consideration of electric vehicles additional hard constraints arise within the EVRP due to their limited driving range (e.g., the consideration whether electric vehicles need to visit a charging station during their daily operation). The proposed parallel ACO algorithm with several colonies also uses a migration policy to allow communication between the different colonies. From the simulation studies it is shown that parallelizing ACO algorithms, both with and without a migration policy, is highly effective.

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze continued...challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. A new type of rehabilitation robot that can follow the user side-by-side is designed for aiding the elderly and disabled. The Human Following Rehabilitation Robot (HFRR) consists of a metal armrest, a set of sensors and a differential mobile base. By predicting the user's speed in the future through the user's current walking speed and the preset path, the problem of human following side-by-side is converted to a problem of keeping a certain lateral distance from the predicted trajectory. Linearizing the tracking error model, the nonholonomic mobile robot (NMR) can maintain a certain lateral distance from the trajectory by using Model Predictive control (MPC) and then follow the user side-by-side. It was reported that cancer cells could biologically respond and adapt to the confined environment during migration in extracellular matrix (ECM). But it is not clearly studied that how cancer cells respond and adapt to confined environment in mechanical way. Thus, in this study, we designed and fabricated a kind of one-layer micro channel to mimic confined environment for analyzing mechanical adaption of cell. This micro channel could apply sequential mechanical stresses on a number of cells with high throughput, and the time of cells passing through five rows of micro channels were used to evaluate their adaptability to the sequential and confined space. In experiments, each cell suffered 20 times of mechanical stresses after passing through 20 squeezing channels arranged in 5 rows. We observed the sequential squeezing processes under microscope and investigated the passing time using a high-speed camera. The preliminary results indicated that cancer cells could pass through and adapt to the confined environment faster than normal cells.
