The vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication can capture infrastructure data and provide travelers with real-time traffic information, which can significantly improve road safety. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) with large bandwidth has been introduced as a key technology to achieve ultra-reliable, low latency, and high-data-rate V2I communication. In this paper, the V2I communication in mmWave band (***) is characterized for typical urban and highway scenarios. By considering the different deployments involving overtaking and traffic flow, the simulations are conducted by employing the self-developed ray-tracing. The key channel parameters, including received power, Rician K-factor, root-mean-square delay spread and angular spreads, are analyzed and compared between different deployments. Moreover, the impacts of the multiple antennas and beam switching technologies at the vehicle are evaluated as well. This work aims to help the researchers understand the channel characteristics of the V2I communication in mmWave band and support communication system design for vehicular communications.

Based on the framework of multiple instance learning (MIL), tremendous works have promoted the advances of weakly supervised object detection (WSOD). However, most MIL-based methods tend to localize instances to their discriminative parts instead of the whole content. In this paper, we propose a spatial likelihood voting (SLV) module to converge the proposal localizing process without any bounding box annotations. Specifically, all region proposals in a given image play the role of voters every iteration during training, voting for the likelihood of each category in spatial dimensions. After dilating alignment on the area with large likelihood values, the voting results are regularized as bounding boxes, being used for the final classification and localization. Based on SLV, we further propose an end-to-end training framework for multi-task learning. The classification and localization tasks promote each other, which further improves the detection performance. Extensive experiments on the PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 datasets demonstrate the superior performance of SLV.

The conversion of biomass residues into biochar is a promising strategy for enhancing sustainability within the circular bioeconomy, particularly through its role in improving renewable natural gas production. However, engineering biochar with optimal properties remains a complex challenge, as the relationship between preparation conditions, biochar characteristics, and anaerobic digestion (AD) performance is not fully understood. This study presents an AI-derived full-process prediction approach that integrates machine learning and generative models to guide the rational design of biochar, and optimize its use for biomethane production. Three tree-based regression models were employed to predict AD performance, with the eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression model demonstrating superior accuracy. Feature importance analysis identified key biochar properties, including electrical conductivity, oxygen content, and specific surface area, as critical factors influencing biomethane production. These properties can be fine-tuned by adjusting pyrolysis conditions and selecting suitable biomass sources. A generative adversarial network was further used to explore a broader data space, helping to identify the optimal combination of parameters for maximizing AD efficiency. This novel AI-driven framework facilitates biochar-mediated renewable natural gas production, offering a scalable and sustainable approach for advancing circular bioeconomy.

In 2023, La Niña conditions that generally prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from mid-2020 into early 2023 gave way to a strong El Niño by October. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all increased to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 419.3±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. The growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.8 ppm, the fourth highest in the record since the 1960s. The combined short-term effects of El Niño and the long-term effects of increasing levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere contributed to new records for many essential climate variables reported here. The annual global temperature across land and oceans was the highest in records dating as far back as 1850, with the last seven months (June–December) having each been record warm. Over land, the globally averaged temperature was also record high. Dozens of countries reported record or near-record warmth for the year, including China and continental Europe as a whole (warmest on record), India and Russia (second warmest), and Canada (third warmest). Intense and widespread heatwaves were reported around the world. In Vietnam, an all-time national maximum temperature record of 44.2°C was observed at Tuong Duong on 7 May, surpassing the previous record of 43.4°C at Huong Khe on 20 April 2019. In Brazil, the air temperature reached 44.8°C in Araçuaí in Minas Gerais on 20 November, potentially a new national record and 12.8°C above normal. The effect of rising temperatures was apparent in the cryosphere, where snow cover extent by June 2023 was the smallest in the 56-year record for North America and seventh smallest for the Northern Hemisphere overall. The development of the cerebral cortex involves a series of dynamic events, including cell proliferation and migration, which rely on the motor protein dynein and its regulators NDE1 and NDEL1. While the loss of function in NDE1 leads to microcephaly-related malformations of cortical development (MCDs), NDEL1 variants have not been detected in MCD patients. Here, we identified two patients with pachygyria, with or without subcortical band heterotopia (SBH), carrying the same de novo somatic mosaic NDEL1 variant, ***105Pro (p.R105P). Through single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomic analysis, we observed complementary expression of Nde1/NDE1 and Ndel1/NDEL1 in neural progenitors and post-mitotic neurons, respectively. Ndel1 knockdown by in utero electroporation resulted in impaired neuronal migration, a phenotype that could not be rescued by p.R105P. Remarkably, p.R105P expression alone strongly disrupted neuronal migration, increased the length of the leading process, and impaired nucleus–centrosome coupling, suggesting a failure in nucleokinesis. Mechanistically, p.R105P disrupted NDEL1 binding to the dynein regulator LIS1. This study identifies the first lissencephaly-associated NDEL1 variant and sheds light on the distinct roles of NDE1 and NDEL1 in nucleokinesis and MCD pathogenesis. © 2024, The Author(s).

With the increasing types and functions of smart home devices, due to the lack of experience of users, they may cause unexpected errors and risks when configuring a large number of device linkage *** response to the above problems, in this paper, we propose an efficient conflict detection method to avoid unexpected ***, to reduce the complexity of subsequent rule conflict detection, we divide each rule into five categories according to its functions and characteristics. At the same time, we configure the priority, user rights, and execution area for each rule. Second, we filter out the rules of the same priority, user rights, and execution area. Third, we define five types of rule conflicts. Finally, the conflict detection algorithm is used to determine whether the filtered rules conflict with the rules in the corresponding database. We have created 379 non-conflicting rules in each type of rule storage database to detect whether the newly created rules conflict with them. Through experimental comparison, we find that our approach has more advantages than previous work in terms of performance and conflict detection types.

Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSCs) possess the ability to long-term reconstitute all the blood lineages and generate all blood cell types. As such, the in vitro generation of HSCs remains a central goal in regenerative medicine. Despite many efforts and recent advancements in the field, there is still no robust, reproducible and efficient protocol for generating bona-fide HSCs in vitro. This suggests that certain regulatory elements have yet to be uncovered. Here, we present a novel and unbiased approach to identifying endogenous components to specify HSCs from pluripotent stem cells. We performed a genome-wide CRISPR activator screening during mesodermal differentiation from mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). Following in vitro differentiation, mesodermal KDR + precursors were transplanted into primary and secondary immunodeficient NSG mice. This approach led to the identification of seven genes (Spata2, Aass, Dctd, Eif4enif1, Guca1a, Eya2, Net1) that, when activated during mesoderm specification, induce the generation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). These cells are capable of serial engraftment and multilineage output (erythroid, myeloid and T and B lymphoid) in vivo. Single-cell RNA sequencing further revealed that activating these seven genes biases the embryoid bodies towards intraembryonic development, instead of extraembryonic, increasing the number of mesodermal progenitors that can generate HSCs. Our findings underscore the importance of differentiation during the first germ layer specification to generate definitive blood stem cells.

Humans and animals are able to generalize or transfer information from previous experience so that they can behave appropriately in novel situations. What mechanisms-computations, representations, and neural systems-give rise to this remarkable ability? The members of this Generative Adversarial Collaboration (GAC) come from a range of academic backgrounds but are all interested in uncovering the mechanisms of generalization. We started out this GAC with the aim of arbitrating between two alternative conceptual accounts: (1) generalization stems from integration of multiple experiences into summary representations that reflect generalized knowledge, and (2) generalization is computed on-the-fly using separately stored individual memories. Across the course of this collaboration, we found that-despite using different terminology and techniques, and although some of our specific papers may provide evidence one way or the other-we in fact largely agree that both of these broad accounts (as well as several others) are likely valid. We believe that future research and theoretical synthesis across multiple lines of research is necessary to help determine the degree to which different candidate generalization mechanisms may operate simultaneously, operate on different scales, or be employed under distinct conditions. Here, as the first step, we introduce some of these candidate mechanisms and we discuss the issues currently hindering better synthesis of generalization research. Finally, we introduce some of our own research questions that have arisen over the course of this GAC, that we believe would benefit from future collaborative efforts. Copyright © 2021, The Authors.
