This paper describes a magnetic tactile sensor with Indium antimonide (InSb) Hall elements for multifunctional sensing devices to detect the normal contact force and the temperature. This sensor consists of two Hall elements and a magnet that are embedded in a silicone rubber. The temperature characteristic of InSb Hall elements depends on the bias circuit to generate the Hall voltage. Two output Hall voltages driven by two kinds of bias circuits were measured in the normal contact force range from 0 to 50 N, the temperature range from -10 to 50°. The inverse response surface to identify the normal contact force and the temperature was formulated using the experimental results.

This paper presents the material characterization of agricultural waste by determining its dielectric properties for microwave absorber application. Three proposed materials, which are empty fruit bunch, oil palm frond and rice husk were investigated for the frequency ranging from 10 GHz to 20 GHz. The methodology was developed using the combination of three techniques involving coaxial probe technique, material density measurement and dielectric mixture model. It is found that the material density and air-particle permittivity have the impact on the wave absorption of the material. The result shows that all three agricultural wastes are capable to absorb electromagnetic signal. The average dielectric constant for solid pulverized agricultural waste are 3.49, 4.06 and 3.31 for empty fruit bunch, oil palm frond and rice husk respectively. Furthermore, at of 15.0 GHz, the solid pulverized empty fruit bunch, oil palm frond and rice husk indicate the highest loss tangent with value of 0.2201, 0.2579 and 0.2218 respectively which contributed from the loss factor of the material complex permittivity.

We have investigated several characteristics of the keystroke dynamics in Japanese free text. In the previous studies, it was indicated that authentication accuracy could not achieve the adequate level of personal authentication for the group including lower typing skill participants. In this paper, we propose a new profiling method generating combined profile documents. By performing a large scale experiment involving 260 participants, we found that the method combining two profile documents out of ten profile documents resulted in the recognition accuracy rate of 98 % even in the case for the group including lower typing skill participants who manage to type 500 to 700 letters per 5 minutes.

Droplet spreading on a two-dimensional wicking surface

The dynamics of droplet spreading on two-dimensional wicking surfaces were studied using square arrays of Si nanopillars. It was observed that the wicking film always precedes the droplet edge during the spreading process causing the droplet to effectively spread on a Cassie-Baxter surface composed of solid and liquid phases. Unlike the continual spreading of the wicking film, however, the droplet will eventually reach a shape where further spreading becomes energetically unfavorable. In addition, we found that the displacement-time relationship for droplet spreading follows a power law that is different from that of the wicking film. A quantitative model was put forth to derive this displacement-time relationship and predict the contact angle at which the droplet will stop spreading. The predictions of our model were validated with experimental data and results published in the literature.

This paper proposes a novel spreading sequence for code-diversity in direct sequence/ code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) communication systems. In code-diversity, a composite sequence which is a sum of several branch sequences is adopted. By the proposed sequences, both the composite sequence and the branch sequences can be constructed from digital signal. Therefore, the hardware of the system can be simplified. By evaluations of computer simulations, bit error rate (BER) performance of the system to suppress multiple access interference (MAI) has a little degradation compared with that of the system using a conventional analog composite sequence. However, it can be obtained almost same BER performance of the system using a previous digital composite sequence by analog branch sequences.

Progression to cell death correlates with neurite swelling induced by stretch injury

Diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a major component of traumatic brain injury, is associated with rapid deformation of brain tissue resulting in the stretching of neural axons. Focal axonal swelling, which is the morphological hallmarks of DAI pathology, leads to the disconnection of neurons from tissues, resulting in cell death. Our goal is better understanding of neuronal tolerance and help to predicting the pathogenesis of DAI from mechanical loading to the head. In present study, we developed an in vitro stretch injury device that subjected cultured cells to a wide range of mechanical stretch that are experienced during in vivo head injury. Then using this device, PC12 cells, which extend structurally axon-like cylindrical protrusions in culture, were stretched to a strain of 0.15, 0.30, or 1.00 at strain rates of 30, 40, or 80 s-1, or left as static culture. Following mechanical loading, we assessed neurite swelling resulting in neuronal detachment from culture substrate and neuronal death. As a result, the increase in early neurite swelling was dependent on the severity of the stretch, and neuronal adhesion and viability at 24 h post-injury decrease in a stretch-dependent manner. These results suggest that the formation of neurite swellings correlates with the progression to neuronal death. © 2012 by JSME.

Acousto-ultrasonic parameters (AU parameters) are applied to the inspection of laminated composite plates. In this paper, instead of wave velocity or attenuation, AU parameters which are based on the power spectrum of the broadband signal are introduced to improve the precision of the inspection. In order to evaluate the effect of laminate structure on wave propagation characteristics, several types of laminated plates which consist of thermoplastic, organic fabric and FRP with different layer thickness are examined. Optimal inclined angle of the transducers for each laminate configuration and variation in AU parameters due to wave propagation distance are focused on. It is found that contact condition between transducer and medium has little effect on AU parameters therefore they are suitable for materials evaluation or damage inspection. Water hammer pumps can effectively use the water hammer phenomenon for water pumping. They are capable of providing an effective fluid transport method in regions without a well-developed social infrastructure. The results of experiments examining the effect of the geometric form of water hammer pumps by considering their major dimensions have been reported. However, these conventional studies have not fully evaluated pump performance in terms of pump head and flow rate, common measures of pump performance. The authors have focused on the effects on the pump performance of various geometric form factors in water hammer pumps. The previous study examined how the hydrodynamic characteristics was affected by the inner diameter ratio of the drive and lift pipes and the angle of the drive pipe, basic form factors of water hammer pumps. The previous papers also showed that the behavior of water hammer pump operation could be divided into four characteristic phases. The behavior of temporal changes in valve chamber and air chamber pressures according to the air volume in the air chamber located downstream of the lift valve was also clarified in connection with changes in water hammer pump performance. In addition, the effects on water hammer pump performance of the length of the spring attached to the drain valve and the drain pipe angle, form factors around the drain valve, were examined experimentally. This study focuses on the form of the lift valve, a major component of water hammer pumps, and examines the effects of the size of the lift valve opening area on water hammer pump performance. It also clarifies the behavior of flow in the valve chamber during water hammer pump operation.

The 2013 Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Pioneers Workshop, which will be held in conjunction with the 8 th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, is the premiere venue for student research in the field. This highly selective workshop seeks to foster creativity, communication, and collaboration between the world's top student researchers in the field of human-robot interaction. Pioneers Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about the current state of HRI, to present their research, and to network with one another and with select senior researchers in a setting that is less formal and more interactive then the main conference. The theme for this year is Re-envisioning HRI: Dealing With the Elephants in Our Room. The workshop aims to bring forward difficult to discuss issues to help the field achieve more balanced perspectives and a clearer picture of what sort of future we are building.

The automotive industry is in a transformation towards powertrain electrification, requiring automotive engineers to develop and integrate technologies from multiple disciplines. We have developed a new interdisciplinary master of engineering degree program and graduate and undergraduate certificates in advanced Hybrid Electric Drive Vehicle engineering. The vehicle level aspects of the program include vehicle requirements, integration of propulsion technologies, safety, diagnostics, control and calibration. We and our industrial partners see these as critical limiting factors in the development and production of advanced electric transportation. Additionally, the effort leverages the existing distance learning program in electric power. The result is an interdisciplinary program that meets the needs of the transportation and electric power industries and provides students with a unique skill set to accelerate the advancement and development of electric drive vehicles. The education program delivers courses to on-campus and distance learning students for the Hybrid Electric Drive Vehicle engineering Undergraduate and Graduate Certificates. Graduate students are able to continue on for their masters or PhD degrees in their respective departments or select an interdisciplinary master's of engineering degree. This degree is designed to prepare students to work in industry or to educate those already working. Our distance learning students come from both the transportation and electric power industries. We seek guidance from these industries to ensure that the program meets the needs of their work force with the course contents reviewed by topical industry experts. This education program will provide a supply of engineers to a significant and sustainable US job base. © 2012 American Society for engineering Education.
