Subset Simulation provides an efficient and robust method to estimate the failure probabilities at small probability levels for a single failure mode defined by the system response concerned. However, estimating failure probabilities of multiple stochastic responses using a single run of Subset Simulation remains quite a challenging task in structural reliability analysis. To address this problem, this study develops a generalized Subset Simulation (GSS) approach, in which a unified intermediate event is defined to drive the simulation procedure progressively approaching multiple failure regions, and estimate the corresponding failure probabilities simultaneously. The sorting difficulty arising in the multiple stochastic responses is bypassed by the definition of the unified intermediate event. Finally, two representative examples are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed GSS approach. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

It remains a challenging task to calculate failure probabilities of multiple limit state functions (LSFs) using a single run of Subset Simulation in structural reliability analysis. To address this issue, this article presents a variant of standard Subset Simulation (SS), in which a unified intermediate event is designed to drive the simulation procedure progressively approaching multiple failure regions defined by all LSFs simultaneously. All failure probabilities of multiple LSFs are obtained by a single run of SS, which bypasses the sorting difficulty arising from the multiple LSFs. A representative example is used to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the presented SS method.

The standard finite element method (FEM) encounters two kinds of errors in the computational acoustic problems: the conventional interpolation error and the dispersion error, the later of which plays an important role in the computational acoustics. The dispersion error is rooted at the "overly-stiff" property of the FEM. In order to control the dispersion error, the most effective measure is to make the numerical model reflect the exact model. An edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) was adopted for acoustic problems both in frequency domain and time domain. By using only triangular mesh which is very adaptive for any complicated domain and introducing gradient smoothing operation performed over each edge-based smoothed domain, the present method can reduce the stiffness and provide proper "softness" to the model. The results demonstrate that the ES-FEM can provide more accurate solution both in time and frequency domain compared with the linear FEM using the same meshes.

Coordination of Divalent Alcl2+ by Redox-Active Carbonyl Groups in Perylene Polyimide for Aluminum Batteries Using Urea-Based Ionic Liquids

Rechargeable aluminum-organic batteries (AOBs) represent a significant evolution from traditional aluminum-ion batteries, utilizing innovative electrolytes with cationic aluminum complexes ([AlClx](3 − x)+, x = 0 – 2). However, AOBs can suffer from cathode intercalation irregularities, slow aluminum ion kinetics, and organic material dissolution, which detract from their broader application. To address these hurdles, we developed a perylene polyimide-anthraquinone/graphene (PI-AQ/G) composite cathode. This cathode efficiently attracted and retained Al complex ions using redox-active carbonyl groups, which were enhanced by cost-effective AlCl3/urea-based ionic liquids to boost electrochemical efficiency. The Al||PI-AQ/G cells with AlCl3:urea (A:U) and AlCl3: N-ethylurea (A:EU) ionic liquids achieved excellent discharge capacities of 265 and 256 mAh g–1, respectively, at 100 mA g–1. The cells containing Al||PI-AQ/G (A:U) displayed a significant reversible capacity of 69 mAh g–1, which was maintained at 42 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 500 mA g–1, showcasing exceptional cyclic stability. Extensive analytical assessments using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy identified AlCl2+ as the primary active species. This species interacted with the carbonyl groups in PI-AQ, facilitating energy storage via the formation of stable Al–Cl–Al bonds. Our research highlights perylene-based organic polyimides as highly effective cathode materials for AOBs, enhancing both performance and cost efficiency. These advancements address substantial challenges in the field and pave the way for the development of high-capacity and cost-effective aluminum-based energy storage solutions. © 2024, The Authors. This report presents a technique of chaotification based on the optimal time-delay feedback that can make a system chaotic with large chaotic parameters range. The bifurcation analysis is done to determine the stability of the time-delay system. An implicit performance index and an optimization strategy are proposed for the time-delay control scheme that can be effectively carried out to obtain the optimal delay time for chaos with best quality. Simulation results of Duffing-type systems show that it is possible to excite the system behaving chaotically while the feedback controls remain small at favorable level. Chaotification performance is further discussed when the excitation frequency and system parameters are widely changed. Results also reveal an interesting phenomenon that the optimal time-delay chaotification can reduce or even eliminates line spectra apparently when the excitation frequency is approximately lower than 8Hz, which may potentially lead to an application for line spectra reduction of the radiated noise emitted from underwater vehicles.

Since the performance of a circuit breaker which has the spring operating mechanism mainly depends on the dynamic behavior of a coil spring, the analysis of the dynamic behavior of a coil spring is required for a performance evaluation of a circuit breaker. When a spring moves so fast from the releasing state, a lot of energy is used to move a self-weight of a spring. In this study, a release test bed is designed for evaluating the dynamic behaviors of a coil spring. From the release tests, the dynamic behaviors of a coil spring are analyzed. RecurDyn is employed to carry out the computer simulation and results are compared with test results. The actual energy transferred to the follower during high-speed motion is analyzed through the comparisons of the kinetic energy between the experiment and the computer simulation. © 2015 IEEE.

Recently, emerging phonon phenomena have been discovered and rapidly developed, which have become an active hot research topic. In this review article, we present state-of-the-art advances in several fascinating phonon transport phenomena. First, we summarize the recent progress on the wave nature of phonons, including phonon coherence and its effects on thermal conductivity and the topological properties of phonons. Then, we discuss the particle nature of phonons, including the weak coupling of phonons and the high-order phonon anharmonicity. Finally, we present the summary and a brief outlook. This review presents the advanced understanding of some emerging phonon phenomena in solid materials, which provides new opportunities for further advancement in a wide variety of applications.

Due to the merits of high flow rate and high lift, double-suction centrifugal pumps are widely used for agricultural irrigation along the Yellow River in northern China. The operational conditions of the pump are highly related to the silt concentration and flow rates. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the vibration characteristics corresponding to different silt concentrations and flow rates to provide a prior guideline for pump condition monitoring. To this end, this paper explores the identification capabilities of typical intelligent models, including convolutional neural network (CNN), deep neural network (DNN), and support vector machine (SVM), to intelligently establish the connection between vibration characteristics and different flow rates and silt concentrations. Experimental studies on a double-section pump covering a range of flow rates and different silt concentrations are conducted. The results show that CNN features higher identification accuracy than DNN and SVM. © 2021 IEEE.

In order to improve the ductility of commercial WE43 alloy and reduce its cost,a Mg-3Y-2Gd-1Nd-0.4Zr alloy with a low amount of rare earths was developed and prepared by sand casting with a differential pressure casting *** microstructure,mechanical properties and fracture behaviors in the as-cast,solution-treated and as-aged states were *** is found that the aged alloy exhibited excellent comprehensive mechanical properties owing to the fine dense plate-shapedβ'precipitates formed on prismatic habits during aging at 200℃for 192 hrs after solution-treated at 500℃for 24 *** ultimate tensile strength,yield strength,and elongation at ambient temperature reach to 319±10 MPa,202±2 MPa and 8.7±0.3%as well as 230±4 MPa,155±1 MPa and 16.0±0.5%at 250℃.The fracture mode of as-aged alloy was transferred from cleavage at room temperature to quasi-cleavage and ductile fracture at the test temperature 300℃.The properties of large-scale components fabricated using the developed Mg-3Y-2Gd-1Nd-0.4Zr alloy are better than those of commercial WE43 alloy,suggesting that the new developed alloy is a good candidate to fabricate the large complex thin-walled components.
