The most distinguishable advantage of a morphing unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) is its ability to adapt to the dissimilar phases of reconnaissance missions involving subsonic loiter and supersonic dash. Effective UCAV configurations are necessarily unconventional, leading to atypical design issues that arise early in the design phases of such an aircraft. As a result, traditional design methods that rely solely on historical data and legacy codes are not viable options. Instead, a physics-based design approach where higher fidelity tools are brought forward into the conceptual design phase is implemented. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is utilized to effectively bring the physics-based knowledge to the early design stages as well as to allow for the exploration of the design space through a parametric design study. As a first step toward generating the meta-models needed in RSM, geometric models are generated in accordance with a design of Experiments (DoE) using Rapid Aircraft Modeler (RAM). Drag polars are then created through the use of such linearized codes as VORLAX, BDAP, and AWAVE. These drag polars are regressed to obtain the coefficients for the terms in the equation for total drag. The result of these regressions is a set of Response Surface Equations (RSE's) that parameterize the overall drag in terms of geometry design variables. The aircraft design is then optimized using the RSE's to minimize overall drag. The optimal design represents the most suitable compromise between the hunter and killer modes for the proposed mission.

This paper presents a new approach to understanding mental models for complex industrial systems. Using the Abstraction Hierarchy (AH) framework as a way to describe mental models, we propose an approach to assess ecological compatibility between an operator's internal mental model and a model of the environment. In order to do so, we have combined and built upon the previous work of Rasmussen (1979) and Moray (1996). We believe that this new approach can assess ecological compatibility and ultimately provide the operator with a more accurate and complete internal mental model that reflects the reality of the environment. We argue that Ecological Interface design (EID) is a way to link mental models and the environment. Future work will be needed in order to assess ecological compatibility. This includes capturing and examining operators' internal mental models, and comparing them with models of the environment.

Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) has become a popular research topic in intelligent transportation systems. Regional Traffic Signal Control (RTSC) using the Multi-agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL) technique has become a promising approach for ATSC due to its ability to achieve the optimum trade-off between scalability and optimality. Most existing RTSC approaches partition a traffic network into several disjoint regions, followed by applying centralized reinforcement learning techniques to each region. However, the pursuit of cooperation among RTSC agents still remains an open issue and no communication strategy for RTSC agents has been investigated. In this paper, we propose communication strategies to capture the correlation of micro-traffic states among lanes and the correlation of macro-traffic states among intersections. We first justify the evolution equation of the RTSC process is Markovian via a system of store-and-forward queues. Next, based on the evolution equation, we propose two GAT-Aggregated (GA2) communication modules—GA2-Naive and GA2-Aug to extract both intra-region and inter-region correlations between macro and micro traffic states. While GA2-Naive only considers the movements at each intersection, GA2-Aug also considers the lane-changing behavior of vehicles. Two proposed communication modules are then aggregated into two existing novel RTSC frameworks—RegionLight and Regional-DRL. Experimental results demonstrate that both GA2-Naive and GA2-Aug effectively improve the performance of existing RTSC frameworks under both real and synthetic scenarios. Hyperparameter testing also reveals the robustness and potential of our communication modules in large-scale traffic networks. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Fabrication of nano-sized Ca(OH)_2 with excellent adsorption ability for N_2O_4

Uniform nano-sized calcium hydroxide （Ca（OH）2） monocrystal powder was synthesized from calcium oxide in a surfactant solution via a digestion method by decreasing the surface tension of the reaction system to control the growth of crystalline Ca（OH）2. The Ca（OH）2 monocrystal powder samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, high resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEM）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller （BET）, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR）. The NOx adsorption ability of the samples was evaluated, and the influence of various types and concentrations of surfactants on powder agglomeration and then the specific surface area in the precipitation process were studied. The specific surface area of the samples was found as high as 58 m2/g and 92 m2/g and the particle size, 300-400 nm and 200-300 nm in the presence of 10 wt% PEG600 and 0.086 mL/L SDS at a reaction time of 5 h, respectively. The product has an exceptionally strong adsorption ability for NOx, which makes it a highly promising adsorbent for emission control and air purification.

Numerous collaborative design tools have been developed to accelerate the product development, and recently environments for building distributed simulations have been proposed. For example, a simulation framework called DOME (Distributed Object-oriented Modeling and Evaluation) has been developed in MIT CADlab. DOME is unique in its decentralized structure that allows heterogeneous simulations to be stitched together while allowing proprietary information an simulation models to remain secure with each participant. While such an approach offers many advantages, it also hides causality and sensitivity information, making it difficult for designers to understand problem structure and verify solutions. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationships between design parameters (causality) and the strength of the relationships (sensitivity) in decentralized web-based design simulation. Algorithms and implementations for the causality and sensitivity analysis are introduced. Causality is determined using Granger's definition of causality, which is to distinguish causation from association using conditional variance of the suspected output variable. Sensitivity is estimated by linear regression analysis and a perturbation method, which transfers the problem into a frequency domain by generating periodic perturbations. Varying Internet latency and disturbances are problematic issues with these methods. Thus, new algorithms are developed and tested to overcome these problems.

Computer networks are pervasive and critical to the operation of today's businesses. While most of us take computer networks for granted, network managers who must configure, operate, and fix faults in computer networks face a daunting task that becomes more complex everyday. Ecological interface design has been shown to be a promising approach for complex systems such as power plants or petrochemical systems. Computer networks are a very different work domain characterized by rapid technological change, extreme decentralization, and the existence of "soft" components. This paper presents the first work domain analysis of this new domain creating an abstraction hierarchy for general signal transfer systems and general computing networks. It shows how the abstraction hierarchy can be applied to this new domain and presents the initial work on an ecological interface design for network management.

Statement of problem: Transparent facial orthoses (TFOs) are commonly used for the treatment of craniomaxillofacial trauma and burns to prevent hypertrophic and keloid scarring. A TFO is typically customized to the patient's facial contours and relies on a precise fit to ensure good rehabilitative performance. A smart method of TFO design and manufacture is needed which does not require an experienced prosthetist, allowing for rapidly produced, well-fitting TFOs. Whether the rapid application reduces the final level of patient scarring is unclear. Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to determine whether a scalable, automated design-through-manufacture pipeline for patient specific TFO fabrication would be successful. Material and methods: The automated pipeline received a 3-dimensional (3D) facial scan captured from a depth sensitive mobile phone camera. The scan was cleaned, aligned, and fit to a template mesh, with a known connectivity. The resultant fitted scan was passed into an automated design pipeline, outputting a 3D printable model of a custom TFO. The TFOs were fabricated with 3D printing and were both physically and digitally evaluated to test the fidelity of a digital fit testing system. Results: A total of 10 individuals were scanned with 5 different scanning technologies (STs). All scans were passed through an automated fitting pipeline and categorized into 2 groups. Each ST was digitally fitted to a ground truth scan. In this manner, a Euclidean distance map was built to the actual facial geometry for each scan. Heatmaps of 3D Euclidean distances were made for all participant faces. Conclusions: The ability to automatically design and manufacture a custom fitted TFO using commercially available 3D scanning and 3D printing technology was successfully demonstrated. The objective of this study is to understand how the reason for use (RFU) or the indication for medications are used, its effects on the decision-making process, the implications, and the willingness among prescribers, pharmacists, and patients to share RFU information. Methods, semi-structured interviews were conducted to retrieve the information needed from a total of 60 participants. Results, pharmacists, prescribers, and patients generally have positive opinions about including RFU information in their communications. Conclusion, there is a general agreement among participants that sharing RFU information will improve patient safety. © 2019 American Psychological Association Inc. All rights reserved.
