Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) technology research not only enhance communication but also communal skills in verbally challenged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, the research on AAC technology is mainly concentrated in developed countries and less explored in developing countries. In this study, we utilized evaluation method to analyze the prospects, existing practices and future possibilities, benefits and barriers of AAC research in developing countries. It is found that Speech Generating Devices (SGD) are mostly preferred by children and in future artificial intelligence (AI) based mobile application will augment communication skills among verbally challenged children. We conclude with general recommendation on succeeding research, collaborative approach and implementation with funding opportunities for substantial growth of AAC technology research in developing countries. This study will facilitate directions for initiating AAC research in developing countries and will accommodate researchers, developers and stakeholders to acknowledge opportunities, barriers, probable and current state of AAC research. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The choice of academic program is a crucial selection as this decision plays a major role in enhancing opportunities in career path. Young adolescents often experience indecisions while choosing their academic major, which may lead to uncertainty in future. Therefore, to assist students to find the right field of study, several researches related to personality dynamics have been conducted in recent years to determine correlation between academic fields and personalities of students and the result showed evident association. Consequently, this increases the productivity and success rate in comparison. This study determines the differences amongst the students of three popular academic programs in Bangladesh and envisage the appropriate academic choice for the prospective students by analyzing their personality traits. For this study, we have collected data from a total of 135 participants. We used students' Big5 Personality Factors (Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness), and academic information to develop the prediction model. Using Gaussian Classifier along with 10-fold cross-validation method, we have achieved an accuracy of 91.1%. The findings of this study demonstrate that the proposed framework has a great potential in assisting prospective students to make an informed decision to determine the suitable higher study options while increasing academic motivation ratio.

Diabetes is a chronic condition affecting millions worldwide and severely impacts health and quality of life. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), over 463 million adults, which is 9.3% of the global population, live with diabetes. Diabetes ranks among the most prevalent chronic diseases and was the ninth-leading cause of mortality in 2019, with 4.2 million deaths reported. This article presents a dataset of 5,288 patient records from Bangladesh, addressing gaps in diabetes research and aiding in healthcare planning, risk analysis, and predictive modelling. The dataset comprises 14 attributes: age, gender, pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glucose levels, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), family history of diabetes and hypertension, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and stroke. A dependent attribute, Diabetic, indicates whether an individual has diabetes or not. The dataset ensures demographic diversity and precise measurements, supporting the study of diabetes and its related health issues. Features like CVD and stroke enable broader research on comorbidities. This dataset facilitates machine learning applications, risk assessment, and personalized healthcare strategies. Researchers can explore the links between diabetes, hypertension, CVD, and stroke, while healthcare providers and policymakers can leverage this to identify trends, allocate resources efficiently, and enhance public health strategies.

mHealth (mobile health) utilizes mobile phones and other wireless technology in medical care which has the potential to improve healthcare system for better and quality life. Even though mHealth got more attention but its adoption are still limited due to lack of awareness and wide level of education in developing countries. With the advancement of technology people are very concerned about the life and life style. After the marriage, couples hope for a wonderful life ahead. However there are lots of concerns which arise in their mind regarding the conjugal life as well as issues related to before, during and after pregnancy. The aim of this paper is to analyze the potential to support them utilizing mHealth. Accordingly we explored research articles, papers and available mobile applications based on the problems a married couple faced during their life stages. We also performed a survey in a large hospital to identify the problems that faced by pregnant women and their family. From our investigation we identified stages required for mhealth adoption for married couples. Consequently it created the opportunities to develop a smart application that can help to address the need. In particular, the app can able to provide the planning of a couple for the contraceptives or to conceive, pregnancy planning and tracking with guideline needed for a pregnant woman along with the role of both husband and wife to help out and finally everything after the birth of the baby. These are the major concerns of our application which can serve as a complete guideline for a couple to overcome the challenges regarding giving birth and growing up a healthy baby. © 2018 IEEE.

Mobile technology has introduced new communication possibility for patients with verbal challenges. In western countries different kinds of SGD and AAC devices are available to fulfill the communicative needs of users with verbal disabilities. Recently mobile phone applications are also used to fulfill the demand of communication. In developing countries like Bangladesh, mobile phones are much more available, affordable and less stigmatizing for the users of any kind. After considering these points, an android app named “Bolte Chai”, has been developed and an experiment has been performed on verbally challenged students and teachers based on four criteria to evaluate the usability and effectiveness of the application. These criteria are, the ability to customize the application to fit the needs of the users, motor skills for operating the applications, reasonable time and resources involved in the teaching and utilization procedure and proper costing, considering the user's affordability. Overall the application supposes to be fully customized, more user friendly and effective to improve communication skills for verbally challenged users.

Worldwide the number of diabetes patient is increasing and the rate is alarming in countries with low and middle income. Medication of a diabetes patient still costly which leads to high mortality in developing and low income countries. Considering the fact that diabetes is a non-curable disease, prevention and management is a big deal. However, proper lifestyle management requires awareness, knowledge and care. Information and Communication technology has made life easier as information can be found more easily. Smartphone based applications are also becoming more popular as prices are lowering every day. Sharing knowledge, creating awareness, disease management and even diagnosis is possible using smartphone applications. In this article we discussed possible solution of diabetes management and prevention through mobile application and also presented our intelligent application, DiaHealth for diabetes management and prevention. To do this, we added recent trends of diabetes based mobile application and compared DiaHealth with other popular applications. Then detailed feature is given in a structured manner. With the technological advancement, we believe DiaHealth will shed light to diabetes patients to manage their health and life style, consequently it will prevent health consequence and reduce healthcare cost. © 2016 IEEE.

There are different kinds of technologies being used to improve the communication opportunity of children with verbal challenges. Portable communication devices provide the facility to the users for customizing applications according their needs. Besides, the usability and costing range of these portable communication devices make them less condemning for the users. On the other hand, communication devices efficiently help the users with less motor skills. After considering these points, a communication device named “Bolte Chai”, has been developed and experimented in a special school's students and teachers based on five criteria to evaluate usability and effectiveness. Those criteria are, the ability to customize the program to fit the needs of the users, motor skills for operating the applications, reasonable time and resources involved in the teaching and utilization procedure, update the system based on current research and proper costing, considering the user's affordability. Based on the evaluation, it has been seen that, this communication device is usable and effective to improve communication skills of nonverbal children.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder which is not fully curable. However, early intervention can improve the condition of the children which requires early detection of autism. For this purpose, screening tools have been immensely used in developed countries. Whereas in developing countries, people are not getting such benefits. In this paper, a new automated approach, Autism Barta is proposed to screen autism in children using smart devices. The application integrates the questions of Bengali version of M-CHAT screening tool with pictorial representation. Therefore, parents can easily understand the interactive questions and use it effectively. The app will automatically screen autism in children, inform the user, store the responses in an online database and will suggest nearby Autism resource center for confirmation and intervention. It is expected that, this system will help to identify and streamline autism for improving the condition in developing countries like Bangladesh.

Diabetes is a silent-killer disease that highly demands proper patient care and sound self-management which is a major challenge for a patient. The advancement in ICT and the rapid increase of mobile phone users are showing that lifestyle management of a diabetes patient can be guided using mobile application. The objective of this review is to analyze the articles and the existing mobile apps that are currently available to support diabetes patient and based on the analysis to describe the opportunities for developing a mobile app integrating most of the common features required for the self-management of a diabetic patient. The review covers journal databases for articles and online markets for mobile app. Initially we found 273 articles from the journal databases and 1004 apps from the online markets out of which 29 articles and 43 apps satisfied our selection criteria. We successfully brought out five primary and seven secondary features which can efficiently handle the self-management system. The major features include blood glucose monitor, medication, diet plan, physical activity, automated transfer of blood glucose data, SMS based notification, weight management, communication etc. No app in our review is found satisfying all the features. Since all the primary and secondary features as a whole are very essential for an effective diabetes patient lifestyle management, but not available in a single app, so there is a potential scope to develop such an app integrating all the features very efficiently. © 2015 IEEE.
