Extracting natural groups of the unlabeled data is known as clustering. To improve the stability and robustness of the clustering outputs, clustering ensembles have emerged recently. In this paper, an ensemble of particle swarm clustering algorithms is proposed. That is, the members of the ensemble are based on the cooperative swarms clustering approaches. The performance of the proposed particle swarm clustering ensemble is evaluated using different data sets and is compared to that of other clustering techniques.

It has been found experimentally that the results related to the collective field emission performance of carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays show variability. The emission performance depends on the electronic structure of CNTs (especially their tips). Due to limitations in the synthesis process, production of highly pure and defect free CNTs is very difficult. The presence of defects and impurities affects the electronic structure of CNTs. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the effect of defects on the electronic structure, and hence, the field emission current. In this paper, we develop a modeling approach for evaluating the effect of defects and impurities on the overall field emission performance of a CNT array. We employ a concept of effective stiffness degradation for segments of CNTs, which is due to structural defects. Then, we incorporate the vacancy defects and charge impurity effects in our Green's function based approach. Simulation results indicate decrease in average current due to the presence of such defects and impurities.

Fluctuation of field emission in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is not desirable in many applications and the design of biomedical x-ray devices is one of them. In these applications, it is of great importance to have precise control of electron beams over multiple spatio-temporal scales. In this paper, a new design is proposed in order to optimize the field emission performance of CNT arrays. A diode configuration is used for analysis, where arrays of CNTs act as cathode. The results indicate that the linear height distribution of CNTs, as proposed in this study, shows more stable performance than the conventionally used unifrom distribution.

As new technologies are introduced into the nuclear industry, there is increasing interest in replacing existing hardwired monitoring systems in nuclear power plant control rooms with innovative human-machine interface (HMI) graphical displays. However, investigations into past accidents at nuclear generating facilities have identified human performance limitations arising from HMI design as one of the most important factors in plant safety. Ecological interface design (EID) is a design methodology for HMI graphical displays that attempts to support operator performance for both anticipated and unanticipated events, which are often precursors to serious accidents. The university of waterloo and the university of Toronto are collaborating with the Norwegian Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) to examine the application of EID in the Swedish Forsmark 3 boiling water reactor nuclear power plant. This paper focuses on the design of advanced graphical displays for the turbine-generator systems.

Most haptic educational papers focus on using haptic devices as an aid to teaching. We introduced the use of vibro-tactile communication as well as tactile and kinesthetic sensing and their combination to high school students in order to introduce them to the field of haptics and its applications. The effectiveness of our approach for introducing the concepts as well as the technical issues associated with haptics to this age group was relatively successful. Initially, various physiological response properties of the human tactile system, including the kinesthetic component as well as the tactual (force, texture) properties were presented. The students were then exposed to theory, hardware (sensors, actuators) interfacing as well as the software to close the loop between sensing and haptic feedback after initially investigating open loop configurations. Vibro-tactile (i.e., pager motors) were used in the labs as chiefly communication devices to convey either pan-tilt from an accelerometer (kinesthetic) or the intensity of force exerted on a force pressure sensor. The students enjoyed the experience, especially the hands-on nature of the project and their only major complaint was that there was too much programming. Our future intent is to abstract the building blocks, simplify the software interfacing so as to allow students of various levels and capabilities to effectively be creative and imaginative in developing various haptic communication applications and tools

This paper addresses the challenging problem of finding collision- free trajectories for many robots moving to individual goals within a common environment. Most popular algorithms for multi-robot planning manage the complexity of the problem by planning trajectories for robots sequentially, such decoupled methods may fail to and a solution even if one exists. In contrast, this paper describes a multi-phase approach to the planning problem that guarantees a solution by creating and maintaining obstacle-free paths through the environment as required for each robot to reach its goal. Using a topological graph and spanning tree representation of a tunnel or corridor environment, the multi-phase planner is capable of planning trajectories for up to r = L¡1 robots, where the spanning tree includes L leaves. Monte Carlo simulations in a large environment with varying number of robots demonstrate that the algorithm can solve planning problems requiring complex coordination of many robots that cannot be solved with a decoupled approach, and is scalable with complexity linear in the number of robots.

The use of two powerful classification techniques (boosting and SVM) is explored for the segmentation of white-matter lesions in the MRI scans of human brain. Simple features are generated from proton density (PD) scans. Radial basis function (RBF) based Adaboost technique and support vector machines (SVM) are employed for this task. The classifiers are trained on severe, moderate and mild cases. The segmentation is performed in T1 acquisition space rather than standard space (with more slices). Hence, the proposed approach requires less time for manual verification. The results indicate that the proposed approach can handle MR field inhomogeneities quite well and is completely independent from manual selection process so that it can be run under batch mode. Segmentation performance comparison with manual detection is also provided

Healthcare applications for small-screen mobile devices are becoming increasingly common for medical professionals and patients. Even so, usability issues including navigation and screen clutter remain a challenge. Ecological interface design (EID) was used to design a patient-oriented diabetes management display for Java-enabled mobile devices, making it one of the first mobile EID (mEID) applications. This paper presents a usability evaluation of the diabetes management application, which compares the mEID display to a modified taskbased display (mEID+Task). The mEID+Task display integrates functional task characteristics such as frequency and necessity;menu structure, item ordering, item labelling, and input scheme were varied. Results showed that normalised trial completion times were moderately faster in the mEID+Task display than in the mEID display, while no differences were observed in trial completion accuracy. Furthermore, the mEID+Task display received higher preference ratings than the mEID display alone. The findings suggest that the usability of mEID displays can be improved by incorporating a task-oriented approach.

Most guidance documents on display design either provide a rigid design standard or a list of high level principles. I argue that neither of these approaches is adequate for a complex display design effort. We need instead to develop a category of higher level "display engineering" principles and methods that can consistently drive a professional display designer to best practices in display design. While this concept of display engineering principles still needs development, I will propose two example display engineering practices, graphical object sensitivity analysis and display design with a margin of safety as examples of what could be gained by establishing a systematic display engineering process.
