This paper addresses the challenging problem of finding collision-free trajectories for many robots moving to individual goals within a common environment. Most popular algorithms for multi-robot planning manage the complexity of the problem by planning trajectories for robots sequentially; such decoupled methods may fail to find a solution even if one exists. In contrast, this paper describes a multi-phase approach to the planning problem that guarantees a solution by creating and maintaining obstacle-free paths through the environment as required for each robot to reach its goal. Using a topological graph and spanning tree representation of a tunnel or corridor environment, the multi-phase planner is capable of planning trajectories for up to r = L – 1 robots, where the spanning tree includes L leaves. Monte Carlo simulations in a large environment with varying number of robots demonstrate that the algorithm can solve planning problems requiring complex coordination of many robots that cannot be solved with a decoupled approach, and is scalable with complexity linear in the number of robots.

Healthcare applications for small-screen mobile devices are becoming increasingly common for medical professionals and patients. Even so, usability issues including navigation and screen clutter remain a challenge. Ecological interfacedesign (EID) was used to design a patient-oriented diabetes management display for Java-enabled mobile devices, making it one of the first mobile EID (mEID) applications. This paper presents a usability evaluation of the diabetes management application, which compares the mEID display to a modified taskbased display (mEID+Task). The mEID+Task display integrates functional task characteristics such as frequency and necessity;menu structure, item ordering, item labelling, and input scheme were varied. Results showed that normalised trial completion times were moderately faster in the mEID+Task display than in the mEID display, while no differences were observed in trial completion accuracy. Furthermore, the mEID+Task display received higher preference ratings than the mEID display alone. The findings suggest that the usability of mEID displays can be improved by incorporating a task-oriented approach.

Most guidance documents on display design either provide a rigid design standard or a list of high level principles. I argue that neither of these approaches is adequate for a complex display design effort. We need instead to develop a category of higher level "display engineering" principles and methods that can consistently drive a professional display designer to best practices in display design. While this concept of display engineering principles still needs development, I will propose two example display engineering practices, graphical object sensitivity analysis and display design with a margin of safety as examples of what could be gained by establishing a systematic display engineering process.

Ecological interfacedesign (EID) has been shown to be an effective design approach for building single-operator interfaces for complex systems. However, in such systems, operators typically are also a part of a team. An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of EID on collaboration. Teams of two operated a feed water simulator, DURESSj, through a series of scenarios given either the EID interface or the Non-EID interface. It was found that there was no penalty to using EID, as scenario completion times with the EID interface were equivalent to the Non-EID interface. Indeed, EID operators demonstrated evidence of more robust control and reported significantly lower mental workload especially when dealing with system faults.

This paper proposes a new approach to beat detection and prediction in music. Recurrent timing networks are used to detect and predict periodicities in an onset stream and are contained within nodes that compete for selection as the best beat hypothesis. Beat prediction nodes perform period self-adjustment to better represent the detected music beat period. The system is tested using a variety of music from different genres and shows promise, in many cases with high correct beat detection percentages.

A flight simulation study was conducted to examine the effect of a visual display of flight time and distance added to a pathway prediction symbology on pilot's flight time management. Twelve participants flew a standard flight path with a time-constrained landing task. Some conditions such as flight under various wind and visibility levels, or instrumentation failures were also applied to the flight tests to measure performance in more challenging conditions. We measured flight's time error as our measure in this study. The results showed that participants flew more accurate flights and landed closer to the required landing time with the visual display particularly under challenging conditions. We concluded that the enhancements made to the pathway prediction display by adding the time-distance gauge supported improved flight time management and flight control.
