We studied the impact of Ecological interfacedesign (EID) displays on mental models using the DURESS II simulator. To assess mental models we used a card sorting exercise, a network building exercise based on the Abstraction Hierarchy, and a system behavior prediction exercise. Participants in the EID condition performed significantly better on the card sorting and network building exercises, but poorer on the prediction exercise. Our results are mixed, suggesting that EID may improve the understanding of means- end links and yet, not improve the ability to predict system behavior. The relatively limited experience of participants with the interface as well as our selection of knowledge elicitation techniques may have influenced these results. More research is needed to fully evaluate the impact of EID on mental models.

Healthcare applications for small-screen mobile devices are becoming increasingly common for medical professionals and patients. Even so, usability issues including navigation and screen clutter remain a challenge. Ecological interfacedesign (EID) was used to design a patient-oriented diabetes management display for Java-enabled mobile devices, making it one of the first mobile EID (mEID) applications. This paper presents a usability evaluation of the diabetes management application, which compares the mEID display to a modified taskbased display (mEID+Task). The mEID+Task display integrates functional task characteristics such as frequency and necessity; menu structure, item ordering, item labelling, and input scheme were varied. Results showed that normalised trial completion times were moderately faster in the mEID+Task display than in the mEID display, while no differences were observed in trial completion accuracy. Furthermore, the mEID+Task display received higher preference ratings than the mEID display alone. The findings suggest that the usability of mEID displays can be improved by incorporating a task-oriented approach.

Data quality is an important and costly topic in modern society, and data quality and contextual data quality are important components of the human-computer relationship. As a long-term design imperative, the user interface needs to be improved to support better data quality. To design for better data quality, this exploratory study characterizes physicians’ opinions on their own data and the data produced by their colleagues. Through a regional survey and semi-structured interviews, the issue of data style and medical record personality was a dominant theme. A record’s personality impacts an individual user’s willingness to accept the data it contains. Future work will incorporate these results into modeling the data quality problem with cognitive work analysis, and will explore design elements to support the design for better data quality.

A full scope simulator study with licensed Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) operators was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of ecological displays in supporting operators with different types of tasks. The results suggest that ecological displays have a advantage in supporting operator performance during monitoring for unanticipated events as compared to mimic-based displays. Furthermore, ecological displays seem to achieve this performance advantage without imposing workload increases. This study provides supporting evidence that EID is effective at a scale and level of complexity representative of NPP operations.

MEMS resonators exhibit rich dynamic behaviors under the internal resonance regime. In this work, we present a novel MEMS bifurcation sensor that exploits frequency unlocking due to a 1:3 internal resonance between two electrostatically coupled micro-resonators. The proposed detection mechanism allows the sensor to operate in binary (digital) and analog modes, depending on whether the sensor merely detects a significant jump event in the peak frequency upon unlocking or measures the shift in the peak frequency after unlocking and uses it in conjunction with a calibration curve to estimate the corresponding change in stimulus. We validate the success of this sensor paradigm by experimentally demonstrating charge detection. High charge resolutions are achieved in binary mode, up to 0.137 fC, and in analog mode, up to 0.01 fC. The proposed binary sensor enables extraordinarily high detection resolutions due to the excellent frequency stability under internal resonance and the high signal-to-noise ratio of the shift in peak frequency. Our findings offer new opportunities for high-performance ultrasensitive sensors.

The paper presents a methodology for improving the organization of knowledge bases and demonstrates its application for generating the content of explanations. The DyKOr (Dynamic Knowledge Organization) method combines information that is usually available through execution traces with existing domain knowledge using techniques from machine learning including knowledge compilation, explanation-based learning, and conceptual clustering. These techniques allow the separation of the knowledge needed to solve a problem from that which is not required, and the identification of information that is related to the problem but is not explicitly stated. Thus, the analysis performed through the methodology can considerably improve the quality and content of explanations. The paper describes the implementation of the methodology and how it can be integrated into typical rule-based expert systems. Illustrations of how the method can be used to produce the content for explanations are presented in the context of typical consultation and problem solving expert systems. A discussion of how the information produced by the method can be used to prepare explanations for users with different levels of expertise is also presented.
