DC microgrids are becoming more and more popular, however there are still difficulties involving ongoing instability that are mostly caused by imbalances in energy supply and demand, particularly in situations with pulse load or variable pulse load patterns. Innovative solutions are required since these disruptive load dynamics significantly decrease the effectiveness of conventional PV-Battery control systems. conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, although widely employed, may encounter limitations when confronted with the unique challenges posed by specific load patterns, notably pulse load scenarios. These dynamic load profiles, characterized by rapid and unpredictable changes. The inherent non-linearity and variability in such load conditions can result in suboptimal control performance, potentially leading to voltage instability and transients within the microgrid. To overcome these issues and improve control performance, the introduction of Neural Network (NN) controllers promises to be a potential approach. NN controllers have a remarkable capacity to learn and adapt from data, making them particularly well-suited for situations characterized by non-linear and dynamic load behavior. In this study, a hybrid PI-NN (Proportional-Integral Neural Network) controller is introduced to reduce load effects, especially pulsed loads, in PV systems with batteries and supercapacitors. This method efficiently optimizes energy storage. For voltage control, it utilizes a PI system, which divides the reference current into low and high-frequency components for battery and supercapacitor control. For enhanced sensitivity and dynamic responsiveness, neural network control replaces conventional PIs. The performance of the hybrid PI-NN controller is evaluated in this work, with an emphasis on its potential to improve PV system efficiency in severe load circumstances.

This paper presents a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) based regression model for characterizing materials at micrwave frequency range. A mathematical model and experimental setup of the Open-Ended Coaxial Probe (OECP) sensor interacting with the material under test (MUT) generate a cross-dataset to validate the MLP regression model, utilizing the frequency-dependent complex dielectric constant for material characterization. This paper utilizes the frequency-dependent response of the OECP sensor (scattering parameters) as input features for the MLP model, while the complex dielectric constant of the MUT serves as the output feature. The optimized MLP model has an R² of 99.991% and MSE of 6.65 × 10^-5, with predictions closely aligning with literature values for standard loads such as distilled water, acetone, and ethanol, obtained using a commercially available dielectric assessment software kit. This cost-effective model enables precise dielectric property estimation, with future work extending to unknown materials, mixtures, and electrolyte solutions. © 2025 IEEE.

We report a millimeter-sized bacteria-powered biobattery that can generate substantially high-power density (427 μW/cm2) only in 7 minutes after liquid introduction. The biobattery features (i) Bacillus subtilis endospores as a storable, dormant biocatalyst which are primed for quick germination, and (ii) a 3-D graphene hydrogel anode decorated with copper oxide particles for high-power generation. Individual biobattery units are easily stackable in series and three-biobattery pack produces more than enough energy to power a light-emitting diode (LED). This work can release microbial energy technology from its restriction to research settings and translate it to practical real-world applications. © 2022 IEEE.

The forecasting of of pseudo-measurements play an important role in distribution system state estimation (DSSE). This paper proposes robust DSSE method based on forecasting-aided graphical learning method. The nodal power consumption models are first built to produce pseudo-measurements based on deep neural network. Then, the pseudo-measurements and real-time measurements are represented as a graph according to the topology of the distribution network, which are further processed by a graph attention network to capture the mapping relationship between the graphical measurements and the state variables based on the error modeling of pseudo-measurements. The robustness against anomalous measurements is achieved through the embedding of structural information of DN. The modeling of pseudo-measurements further enhance its robustness by guiding the formulation of edge weights of the graph neural network. Comparative tests are carried out on a IEEE 119-node system to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. © 2024, State Grid Electric Power.

Light behaviours in disordered materials have been of research interest primarily at length scales beyond or comparable to the wavelength of light, because order and disorder are often believed to be almost indistinguishable in the subwavelength regime according to effective medium theory (EMT). However, it was recently demonstrated that the breakdown of EMT occurs even at deep-subwavelength scales when interface phenomena, such as the Goos-Hänchen effect, dominate light flows. Here we develop the engineering of disordered multilayers at deep-subwavelength scales to achieve angle-selective manipulation of wave localization. To examine the disorder-dependent EMT breakdown, we classify the intermediate regime of microstructural phases between deep-subwavelength crystals and uncorrelated disorder through the concept of stealthy hyperuniformity (SHU). In this classification, we devise nontrivial order-to-disorder transitions by selectively tailoring the short-range and long-range order in SHU multilayers, achieving angle-selective control of wave localization. The result paves the way to the realization of deep-subwavelength disordered metamaterials, bridging the gap between the fields of disordered photonics and metamaterials. © 2024, CC BY.

Performance evaluation of communication networks for networked microgrids

The main goal of cyber-physical power systems (CPPSs) is to provide seamless collaboration between the physical and cyber systems, bridging disciplines, such as communication networks and control systems. Controlling the operation of Microgrids (MGs) as a cyber-physical power system must include both the physical and cyber layers. Generally, the microgrid control center MGCC is employed for reliable operation management between the different local controllers within the networked microgrids (NMGs). Therefore, an excessive number of communication channels between the MGCC and the local controllers will exist, affecting the control performance of the NMGs. This paper focuses on developing an innovative communication network emulation model for standalone DC networked microgrids using a Network Simulator (NS3), miming the communication infrastructure to control the networked microgrid system. Through the real-time simulation, the performance of the proposed communication network model was evaluated by employing two transmission protocols, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), to facilitate the data exchange between the MGCC and the local controllers in each MG while operating under different traffic loads. The comparative results of using these protocols in terms of the key performance indicators (KPIs) of the communication performance metrics, such as the mean delay, percentage of packet loss, and transmitted and received bitrate, reveal notable insights into their suitability in data transmission for controlling and managing the operation of the NMGs. © 2024 The Author(s)

As a recently proposed reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) architecture, active RIS has drawn considerable interest. The important feature of the active RIS is its ability to strengthen the impinging signals to mitigate the multiplicative fading effect inherent in passive RIS-aided systems. Herein, we explore the performance of an active RIS-aided uplink multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, considering the phase noise at the RIS. Furthermore, a two-timescale scheme is utilized, where the base station (BS) beamforming is designed based on the instantaneous aggregated channel state information (CSI), while the statistical CSI is used for designing the phase shifts of the active RIS. In addition, the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator is adopted to estimate the aggregated channel, which combines both the cascaded and direct channels. According to the estimated channel, a closedform expression for the lower bound of achievable rate is derived. Based on the theoretical expressions, the power scaling laws for the considered system are also investigated. Specifically, when each user’s transmit power is proportionally reduced by the quantity of BS antennas M or RIS elements N, we find that the amplified thermal noise causes the lower bound of the achievable rate to approach zero as M or N tends to infinity. Moreover, an optimization approach based on a genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced to obtain the optimal phase shifts for maximizing the achievable rate. Numerical results reveal that the active RIS can greatly enhance the performance of the massive MIMO system compared to its passive counterpart. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Changes in coal seam hardness cause fluctuations in the feed resistance at the drill bit during the drilling process, leading to unstable feeding speed. This paper proposes a robust dynamic output feedback controller to suppress disturbances caused by the variations in coal seam hardness in the feed system. Firstly, an unknown parameter measuring coal seam hardness is introduced, and an uncertain model of the feeding system is established based on the finite element model of the drill string. By designing weighted functions based on industrial field requirements and constructing a generalized plant, the controller achieves loop shaping, reducing the low-frequency impact of coal seam hardness variations on the feed system and suppressing the systems resonance peak. Simulation results demonstrate that the controller effectively suppresses parameter variations and external disturbances caused by changes in coal seam hardness, achieving stable control of the drilling speed.

As China's steel production accounts for an increasing share of the world's output, the intelligent transformation of the steel industry is becoming increasingly urgent. To address issues such as low levels of mobile informationization in steel enterprises and the lack of an industry-specific mobile application platform, it is of great significance to establish a shared mobile application platform for the steel industry. In this paper, the requirements of the platform were analyzed, and the platform's functions were designed. The software design of the platform was then carried out, and the entire mobile application sharing platform was developed, effectively improving the production management efficiency of steel enterprises. The results indicate that the platform can effectively meet the needs of steel enterprises and has significant engineering significance. © 2023 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.
