During the coal seam drilling process, the drill string is subject to compressive deformation, compounded by unpredictable variations in formation hardness and borehole wall friction, leading to challenges in maintaining a stable feeding speed. This paper presents a novel approach by introducing uncertain parameters to describe the effects of formation hardness and borehole wall friction. Drill string axial movement model is modeled as a polyhedral system based on a lumped parameter representation. To meet industrial performance requirements, we design a robust $H_{\infty}$ controller to achieve consistent feeding speed control. Our simulation results demonstrate the controller's effectiveness in ensuring system stability despite fluctuations in formation hardness and drill string friction.

The emerging virtual coupling technology aims to operate multiple train units in a Virtually Coupled Train Set(VCTS)at a minimal but safe *** guarantee collision avoidance,the safety distance should be calculated using the state-of-the-art space-time separation principle that separates the Emergency Braking(EB)trajectories of two successive units during the whole EB *** this case,the minimal safety distance is usually numerically calculated without an analytic ***,the constrained VCTS control problem is hard to address with space-time separation,which is still a gap in the existing *** solve this problem,we propose a Distributed Economic Model Predictive Control(DEMPC)approach with computation efficiency and theoretical ***,to alleviate the computation burden,we transform implicit safety constraints into explicitly linear ones,such that the optimal control problem in DEMPC is a quadratic programming problem that can be solved *** theoretical analysis,sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the recursive feasibility and stability of DEMPC,employing compatibility constraints,tube techniques and terminal ingredient ***,we extend our approach with globally optimal and distributed online EB configuration methods to shorten the minimal distance among ***,experimental results demonstrate the performance and advantages of the proposed approaches.

We show that if a ternary quartic form is convex, then it must be sos-convex;i.e, if the Hessian H(x) of a ternary quartic form is positive semidefinite for all x, then the biquadratic form yT H(x)y in the variables x:= (x1, x2, x3)T and y:= (y1, y2, y3)T must be a sum of squares. This result is in a meaningful sense the "convex analogue" of Hilbert’s celebrated theorem on ternary quartics. We show that exploiting the structure of the Hessian matrix is crucial in any possible proof of this result by presenting an explicit example of a biquadratic form b(x, y) that is symmetric in x and y, nonnegative, but not a sum of squares. © 2024, CC BY.

Partial discharge (PD) is a common and detrimental phenomenon that can cause damage and potential breakdown in insulation systems. According to the air breakdown voltage behaviors shown by Paschen's curve, from sea level to high altitude, the partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) of the air is expected to decrease with decreasing pressure. So far, there has not been a widely accepted PD testing method for aviation wires in low pressure environments with pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage excitations. There have been studies of the PD behaviors of aviation wires with conventional triangular impulses, ac voltages, and PWM pulses with relatively low dv/dt. But existing test methods and study results cannot be directly utilized to test and predict PDIV of aviation wires when high dv/dt PWM excitation is applied with wide-bandgap (WBG) power devices, such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs). Thus, this paper aims to provide more insights on PD behaviors of aviation wires under high dv/dt PWM excitations and possible ways to improve the existing PD test methods. A test setup including an ultra-high dv/dt PWM generator, a test sample fixture, and associated PD sensors including a photomultiplier tube (PMT), a high frequency current transducer (HFCT), and an ultra-high-frequency (UHF) antenna will be introduced. Experimental results and associated analysis for aviation wire test samples at various pressures under high dv/dt PWM excitations will be presented. The effect of the rise time of the PWM will be discussed in detail. Suggestions on how to improve test methods and test standards will be provided. © 2022 IEEE.

Hand Gesture Recognition from an Open-Set Perspective

Existing hand gesture recognition methods predominantly rely on a close-set assumption, which in essence limits the viewpoints, gesture categories, and hand shapes at test time to closely resemble those seen during training. This requirement is however rarely met in practice, as images are often captured from unconstrained viewpoints, with novel gestures and unseen hand shapes that can differ significantly from the training data. This motivates us to investigate an open-set hand gesture recognition problem, where hand gestures are still recognizable from unconstrained viewpoints, and novel gesture classes and hand shapes can be incrementally learned with just a few examples. To address this, we propose a viewpoint influence elimination network that extracts view-independent features, significantly improving performance in scenarios with unconstrained viewpoints. Moreover, a joint-weighted classification scheme is introduced to augment the cosine similarity metric for evaluating few-shot incremental learning of novel gestures and shapes. Finally, as existing hand gesture recognition datasets primarily adhere to the close-set assumption, a new hand gesture recognition dataset, OHG, is introduced in this paper, that includes a wide range of viewpoints, diverse gesture classes, and distinct hand shapes. Experimental hand gesture recognition results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach in both unconstrained viewpoint and few-shot incremental learning scenarios. The strategic incorporation of oriented steel in a segmented stator AC electric machine has the potential to enhance machine performance by reducing core losses compared to a machine designed with non-oriented steel. However, the introduction of cut-edges and the stress on individual segments resulting from segmented stator construction may have unintended consequences. Despite several attempts to assess the impact of cut-edges or oriented steel on core losses in segmented stators, the literature lacks an analysis of the loss separation between tooth and back-iron components using manufactured stators. This gap in understanding prevents a comprehensive assessment of the true impact of using oriented steel in segmented stator construction for core loss improvement. In this work, the loss of each tooth and back-iron segment is calculated by conducting experiments with three different electromagnetic devices, specifically H-shaped steel laminations. By comparing the results from three manufactured stators, we elucidate the influence of oriented steel in proportion to the segmented stator construction.

Off-road autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) work in unstructured environments with varied elevation and deformable ground, where vehicle-terrain interactions are more complex resulting in unpredictable dynamics behavior. Current sensor-based hazards/obstacle identification methods mainly focus on geometric hazards/obstacles with explicit geometry, which might be adequate for vehicles in on-road conditions. However, in the off-road environment, vehicle-terrain interactions could introduce non-geometric hazards that cannot be detected by current geometric hazards-oriented sensing techniques, e.g. vehicle stuck in mud. To enable AGVs to traverse the target terrain and meet the goal while avoiding non-geometric hazards, this work proposes a motion planning method integrated with coupled vehicle-terrain dynamics response. Specifically, terramechanics-based modeling and simulation (M&S) is utilized to characterize vehicle-terrain interactions. Based on the dynamics response, a reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm with a specialized reward function is used to navigate the AGV to find the goal with high mobility and safety. We demonstrate the proposed method with two case studies, 1) high mobility is the foremost concern with less safety requirement, and 2) both high mobility and safety are required. The results show that the proposed motion planning method is effective for navigating the AGV in off-road terrains. © 2024 IEEE.

Market Design for Capacity Sharing in Networks

We study a market mechanism that sets edge prices to incentivize strategic agents to efficiently share limited network capacity. In this market, agents form coalitions, with each coalition sharing a unit capacity of a selected route and making payments to cover edge prices. Our focus is on the existence and computation of market equilibrium, where challenges arise from the interdependence between coalition formation among strategic agents with heterogeneous preferences and route selection that induces a network flow under integral capacity constraints. To address this interplay between coalition formation and network capacity utilization, we introduce a novel approach based on combinatorial auction theory and network flow theory. We establish sufficient conditions on the network topology and agents’ preferences that guarantee both the existence and polynomial-time computation of a market equilibrium. Additionally, we identify a particular market equilibrium that maximizes utilities for all agents and is equivalent to the classical Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism. Furthermore, we extend our results to multi-period settings and general networks, showing that when the sufficient conditions are not met, an equilibrium may still exist but requires more complex, path-based pricing mechanisms that set differentiated prices based on agents’ preference parameters.
