The problem of constructing codes capable of detection and location of a given set of errors is considered. Lower and upper bounds on a number of redundant symbols for an arbitrary set of errors are derived. These codes can be used for error detection and identification of faulty processing elements in multiprocessor systems. To this end, new classes of codes for several types of error sets such as stars, trees and FFTs meshes are presented. The concepts of strong and weak diagnostics (SD and WD, respectively) are introduced and discussed. © 1994, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

In this paper we describe a CAD environment for performance and yield driven circuit design with electromagnetic (EM) field simulations employed within the optimization loop. Microstrip structures are accurately simulated and their responses are incorporated into the overall circuit analysis. We unify the component level interpolation technique, devised to handle discretization of geometrical parameters, and the modeling technique used to lighten the computational burden of statistical design centering. We discuss the organization and utilization of the data base system integrated with the modeling technique. We demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of performance and yield optimization with EM simulations.< >

A Framework for Undoing Actions in Collaborative systems

The ability to undo operations is a standard feature in most single-user interactive applications. We propose a general framework for implementing undo in collaborative systems. The framework allows users to reverse their own changes individually, taking into account the possibility of conflicts between different users' operations that may prevent an undo. The proposed framework has been incorporated into DistEdit, a toolkit for building group text editors. Based on our experience with DistEdit's undo facilities, we discuss several issues that need to be taken into account in using the framework, in order to ensure that a reasonable undo behavior is provided to users. We show that the framework is also applicable to single-user systems, since the operations to undo can be selected not just on the basis of who performed them, but by any appropriate criterion, such as the document region in which the operations occurred or the time interval in which the operations were carried out. © 1994, ACM. An event-based control system with an endomorphic neural network model is designed and realized to control a saturated nonlinear plant. This scheme is based on an event-based control paradigm. However, this scheme has some aspects different from the original scheme due to the saturation property of the plant. This new scheme may be viewed as a method combining a time-based diagnosis mechanism in event-based control with a state-based control mechanism in neural network control. A chemical plant having strong nonlinearity and complicated dynamics is controlled using the realized event-based control system. This paper discusses the structure of an event-based controller, the neural network modelling methodology, related problems, and experimental results.< >

A novel approach to statistical modeling is presented. The statistical model is directly extracted by fitting the cumulative probability distributions (CPDs) of the model responses to those of the measured data. This new technique is based on a solid mathematical foundation and, therefore, should prove more reliable and robust than the existing methods. The approach is illustrated by statistical MESFET modeling based on a physics-oriented model which combines the modified Khatibzadeh and Trew model and the Ladbrooke model (KTL). The approach is compared with the established parameter extraction/postprocessing approach (PEP) in the context of yield verification.< >

A novel sonar array for mobile robots is presented with applications to localization and mapping of indoor environments. The ultrasonic sensor localizes and classifies multiple targets in two dimensions to ranges of up to 8 meters. By accounting for effects of temperature and humidity, the system is accurate to within 1 mm and 6.1 degrees in still air. Targets separated by 10 mm can be discriminated. Targets are classified into planes, corners, edges and unknown, with the minimum of two transmitters and two receivers. A novel approach is that receivers are closely spaced to minimize the correspondence problem of associating echoes from multiple targets. A set of templates is generated for echoes to allow the optimal arrival time to be estimated, and overlapping echoes and disturbances to be rejected.< >

Using their previous observation that H/sup /spl infin// filtering coincides with Kalman filtering in Krein space the authors develop square-root arrays and Chandrasekhar recursions for H/sup /spl infin// filtering problems. The H/sup /spl infin// square-root algorithms involve propagating the indefinite square-root of the quantities of interest and have the property that the appropriate inertia of these quantities is preserved. For systems that are constant, or whose time-variation is structured in a certain way, the Chandrasekhar recursions allow a reduction in the computational effort per iteration from O(n/sup 3/) to O(n/sup 2/), where n is the number of states. The H/sup /spl infin// square-root and Chandrasekhar recursions both have the interesting feature that one does not need to explicitly check for the positivity conditions required of the H/sup /spl infin// filters. These conditions are built into the algorithms themselves so that an H/sup /spl infin// estimator of the desired level exists if, and only if, the algorithms can be executed.< >

We introduce the Anisotropic Diffusion Pyramid (ADP), a structure for multiresolution image processing. We also develop the ADP for use in region-based segmentation. The pyramid is constructed using the anisotropic diffusion equations, creating an efficient scale-space representation. Segmentation is accomplished using pyramid node linking. Since anisotropic diffusion preserves edge localization as the scale is increased, the region boundaries in the coarse-to-fine ADP segmentation are accurately delineated. An application to segmentation of remotely sensed data is provided. The results of ADP segmentation are compared to Gaussian-based pyramidal segmentation. The examples show that the ADP has a superior ability to subdivide the image into integral groupings, minimizing the error in boundary localization and in pixel intensity.< >

In this paper we describe an algorithm for efficient circuit-level simulation of transmission lines which can be specified by tables of frequency-dependent scattering parameters. The approach uses a forced stable section-by-section l2 minimization approach to construct a high order rational function approximation to the frequency domain data, and then applies guaranteed stable balanced realization techniques to reduce the order of the rational function. The rational function is then incorporated in a circuit simulator using fast recursive convolution. An example of a transmission line with skin-effect is examined to both demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach and to show its generality.

A redundant manipulator can achieve additional tasks by utilizing the degree of redundancy, in addition to a basic motion task. While some additional tasks can be represented as an objective function to be optimized, other additional tasks can be represented as kinematic inequality constraints. In this paper, we reformulate a redundancy resolution problem with multiple criteria into a local constrained optimization problem, and propose a new method for solving it. The proposed method is especially efficient when the number of additional tasks is larger than the degree of redundancy. It also systematically assigns the priorities between the additional tasks. Besides of computational efficiency, the method has a cyclic property.< >
