The authors show that the game of life algorithm, which is equivalent to a Turing machine, can be realized by cellular neural networks (CNNs). They also present a multipath CNN algorithm that demonstrates the capabilities of analog/logic (analogic) software. Complex image processing tasks can be realized by programmable dual computing CNNs. A specific example of blob-counting in a gray-scale image is presented.< >

The authors study all-digital discrete-time vector current control loops containing a voltage-fed inverter in series with a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Normal operation of the typical pulse width modulating voltage fed inverter introduces nonlinear distortion into the voltage and the current waveforms of the motor. The authors consider both the causes and the attenuation of these disturbances using all-digital control. An effective, fully digital current controller is developed, and experimental results from a Motorola 68020 microprocessor-based system are presented.< >

A number of robust stability problems take the following form: A polynomial has real coefficients wvhich are multiaffine in real parameters that are confined to a box in parameter space. An efficient method is required for checking the stability of this set of polynomials. We present two sufficient conditions in this paper. They involve: checking certain properties at the corners and edges of the parameter space box.

A novel quasi-optical millimeter-wave (MMW) monolithic monopulse receiver and its performance when integrated with a quasi-optical diplexer and antenna are described. Integration of the antenna, diplexer, and receiver forms a complete MMW radar front end. The receiver, which was fabricated on 0.025-in.-thick GaAs substrates, included four monolithic chips. The entire receiver was packaged on the planar back surface of a 1.5-in.-diameter lens. This lens, hyperhemispherical in shape, provided a dual function as a focusing lens and carrier for the monolithic receiver. The measured noise figure and conversion gain of the receiver were 8.7 dB and 19.0 dB, respectively, at 35.0 GHz.< >

Ali Tassoudji:received his BS (1987) and MS (1989) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Since 1989 he has been a research assistant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he is currently working towards his PhD in Electrical Engineering. The finite difference-time domain (FD-TD) technique is applied to the solution of Maxwell's equations. A computer program, which can be used to simulate and study numerous electromagnetic phenomena, is developed and implemented on an IBM 386 compatible personal computer. The FD-TD technique is a useful tool for students in electromagnetics. The technique is flexible and can be applied to many basic EM scattering and radiation problems. Because field solutions are found as a function of time, visualization of the propagation of the EM fields is possible. The FD-TD technique is implemented for a two-dimensional rectangular grid in conjunction with a second-order absorbing boundary condition. Both E- and H-field polarizations are analyzed. Finite objects consisting of dielectric, magnetic and conducting materials, and perfectly conducting infinite ground planes are modeled. Plane wave and line current sources are implemented. In addition to the capability of animating the propagation of the EM fields, radiation and scattering patterns can be generated.

A nonperiodic random number generator, which is based on the logistic equation, is presented. A simple transformation that operates on the logistic variable and leads to a sequence of random numbers with a near‐Gaussian distribution, is described and discussed. The associated algorithm can be easily utilized in laboratory exercises, classroom demonstrations, and software written for stochastic modeling purposes.

Body current scanning (BCS) is a new concept that exploits body (substrate) current reversal in NPN bipolar transistors to characterize the floating body effects and parasitic bipolar action in n-channel silicon-on-insulator (SOI) metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) transistors. At sufficiently high drain biases, a parasitic bipolar transistor modeled in parallel with the SOI MOS transistor is activated by hole accumulation in the body. BCS directly measures the floating body potential corresponding to the parasitic bipolar base, and is capable of distinguishing between the respective current contributions from MOS and bipolar devices. Consequently, the evaluation of parasitic bipolar and the influence of floating body on SOI device characteristics are facilitated.

The response characteristics of a CC14-based plasma process used to etch doped polysilicon have been examined via a 2(6-1) fractional factorial experiment followed by a Box-Wilson design. The effects of variation in RF power, pressure, electrode spacing, CC14 flow, He flow the O2 flow on several output variables, including etch rate, selectivity, and process uniformity were investigated. Etch anisotropy was also measured via SEM analysis on a 2(6-2) fraction of the original experiment. The screening factorial experiment was designed to isolate the most significant input parameters. Using this information as a platform from which to proceed, the subsequent phase of the experiment enabled the development of empirical models of etch behavior using response surface methodology [1]. The models were subsequently used to optimize the etch process.

We present an improved initialization procedure for the alternating projection (AP) algorithm which is an efficient iterative algorithm for computing the deterministic maximum likelihood (ML) estimator of the locations of multiple sources in passive sensor arrays. By utilizing the high resolution property of the sequential MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm based on the sequential estimation technique, the procedure provides fast initial estimates that reduce significantly the number of iterations to convergence. Also these initial estimates improve greatly the possibility of global convergence. Also, we give computer simulation results to compare the AP algorithm using the proposed initialization procedure and the original AP algorithm in terms of the estimation performance and convergence behaviors.

An analysis and design of a pseudorandom pattern generator, (PRPG), based on a linear recurrence, for built-in self-test (BIST) boundary scan design is presented. The authors present for the case when r≥s, a design of an s-stage PRPG capable of producing 2s-1 distinct r-bit patterns within 2s-1 clock pulses independent of the hardware realization of the PRPG. For the case when rr distinct r-bit patterns and the expected number T(N) of distinct patterns given a number N of clock pulses were presented. The proposed theoretical average N(T) was shown to be close to the experimental average values Nex(T). Hence, the value N(T) or T(N) can be used as a benchmark for evaluating the efficiency of a BIST boundary scan test generation. © 1991 IEEE.
