This paper presents the Adaptive Personalized Control System (APECS) architecture, a novel framework for human-in-the-loop control. An architecture is developed which defines appropriate constraints for the system objectives. A method for enacting Lipschitz and sector bounds on the resulting controller is derived to ensure desirable control properties. An analysis of worst-case loss functions and the optimal loss function weighting is made to implement an effective training scheme. Finally, simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture. This architecture resulted in a 4.5% performance increase compared to the human operator and 9% to an unconstrained feedforward neural network trained in the same way. © 2025, CC BY.

Extraordinary Quality Factors in Dual-Band Polarization-Insensitive QuasiBound States in the Continuum

In this study, we investigate a novel "dimerized" dielectric metasurface featuring dual-mode resonances governed by symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs). The metasurface design offers advantages such as insensitivity to incident light polarization and exceptionally high quality factors exceeding 105 for low and moderate structural deviations from the monoatomic array. By introducing mastered perturbations in the metasurface via the Brillouin zone folding method, without reducing symmetry, we explore the behavior of symmetry-protected BIC states and their polarization-independent responses. Through numerical simulations and analysis, we demonstrate the superiority of Q factors for specific BIC-based resonances, leading to precise control over interaction behaviors and light engineering in both near and far fields. Our findings contribute to the understanding of BIC resonance interactions and offer insights into the design of high-performance sensing applications and meta-devices with enhanced functionalities. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Metamaterial-induced-transparency engineering through quasi-bound states in the continuum by using dielectric cross-shaped trimers

This study presents a novel approach to activate a narrowband transparency line within a reflecting broadband window in all-dielectric metasurfaces, in analogy to the electromagnetically-induced transparency effect, by means of a quasi-bound state in the continuum (qBIC). We demonstrate that the resonance overlapping of a bright mode and a qBIC-based nearly-dark mode with distinct Q-factor can be fully governed by a silicon trimer-based unit cell with broken-inversion-symmetry cross shape, thus providing the required response under normal incidence of a linearly-polarized light. Our analysis that is derived from the far-field multipolar decomposition and near-field electromagnetic distributions uncovers the main contributions of different multipoles on the qBIC resonance, with governing magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole terms supplied by distinct parts of the dielectric "molecule." The findings extracted from this research open up new avenues for the development of polarization-dependent technologies, with particular interest in its capabilities for sensing and biosensing. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Clinical resistance predictors to first-line VEGFR-TKI monotherapy for metastatic renal cell carcinoma: a retrospective multicenter real-life case series

Aim:For many years,systemic treatment of metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma(mRCC)was based on sequential targeted agent *** this real-life case series,we evaluated easily accessible clinical factors useful for disease course ***:We exploited patients'clinical pathological characteristics and systemic treatment outcomes in a real-world population of 365 mRCC patients who received sequential monotherapies in the targeted therapy era,and we identified an early progressors subpopulation,resistant to first-line VEGFR-TKI monotherapy in less than 6 ***:Early progressors(n=124)show a far worse OS compared with patients progressing beyond the sixth month of therapy(13.5 vs.44.8 months,P-value<0.0001,HR=0.41,95%CI:0.29-0.53).However,these patients did not show far worse performance in second and third-line settings compared to first-line *** the univariate analysis,IMDC risk class,sarcomatoid features,and Systemic Inflammation Index(SII)were correlated with first-line therapy Progression-Free Survival(PFS1).In multivariate analysis,variables correlated with first-line outcome were IMDC risk class,histotype,and number of metastatic sites at the ***:Real-world data can contribute to developing easy-to-use prognostic factors associated with refractory disease that could support clinicians in identifying the most appropriate treatment strategy for each patient.

This report presents a ‘Gastrobot’ engineered for extended self-sufficient operation in water bodies. It features microbial fuel cells (MFCs) mimicking a digestive system to convert biochemical into mechanical energy, achieving 135μW/cm power density for autonomous propulsion. The MFCs use hydrophobic/hydrophilic interfaces for nutrient intake and incorporate Bacillus subtilis spores, which germinate in nutrient-rich conditions, fueling the system and enabling motion. A central motor activates for movement, highlighting the robot’s potential as a smart sensor node within an ‘Ocean of Things’ network, advancing global aquatic surveillance and connectivity.

Our research presents a novel paper-based moist-electric generator (PMEG) for the Internet of Disposable Things (IoDT) that operates by harnessing ambient moisture. This disposable, eco-friendly power source is crafted from micropatternable hydrophilic paper, whose hygroscopicity is significantly enhanced with a blend of bacterial endospores and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a superhygroscopic polymer. The PMEG demonstrates remarkable electrical performance, producing a steady voltage of approximately 0.42 V at 90% relative humidity, with power densities reaching 2.3 μW/cm 2 . Remarkably, it sustains a voltage of 0.2 V for over 60 hours even at a lower humidity of 40%. The integration of robust endospores, capable of swelling by up to 12% and withstanding environmental stresses, positions our PMEG as a sustainable and durable solution for powering IoDT devices.

Outlier detection refers to the identification of anomalous samples that deviate significantly from the distribution of normal data and has been extensively studied and used in a variety of practical tasks. However, most unsupervised outlier detection methods are carefully designed to detect specified outliers, while real-world data may be entangled with different types of outliers. In this study, we propose a fuzzy rough sets-based multi-scale outlier detection method to identify various types of outliers. Specifically, a novel fuzzy rough sets-based method that integrates relative fuzzy granule density is first introduced to improve the capability of detecting local outliers. Then, a multi-scale view generation method based on granular-ball computing is proposed to collaboratively identify group outliers at different levels of granularity. Moreover, reliable outliers and inliers determined by the three-way decision are used to train a weighted support vector machine to further improve the performance of outlier detection. The proposed method innovatively transforms unsupervised outlier detection into a semi-supervised classification problem and for the first time explores the fuzzy rough sets-based outlier detection from the perspective of multi-scale granular balls, allowing for high adaptability to different types of outliers. Extensive experiments carried out on both artificial and UCI datasets demonstrate that the proposed outlier detection method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, improving the results by at least 8.48% in terms of the Area Under the ROC Curve (AUROC) index.
