This article delves into advancements in resource allocation techniques tailored for systems utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), with a primary focus on achieving low-complexity and resilient solutions. The investigation of low-complexity approaches for RIS holds significant relevance, primarily owing to the intricate characteristics inherent in RIS-based systems and the need of deploying large-scale RIS arrays. Concurrently, the exploration of robust solutions aims to address the issue of hardware impairments occurring at both the transceivers and RIS components in practical RIS-assisted systems. In the realm of both low-complexity and robust resource allocation, this article not only elucidates the fundamental techniques underpinning these methodologies but also offers comprehensive numerical results for illustrative purposes. The necessity of adopting resource allocation strategies that are both low in complexity and resilient is thoroughly established. Ultimately, this article provides prospective research avenues in the domain of low-complexity and robust resource allocation techniques tailored for RIS-assisted systems. Plasmon resonance in metals represents the collective oscillation of the free electron gas density and enables enhanced light-matter interactions in nanoscale dimensions 1–4. Traditionally, the classical Drude model describes the plasmonic excitation, wherein the plasma frequency exhibits no spatial dispersion 5. Here, we show conclusive experimental evidence of the breakdown of the plasmon resonance and a consequent photonic metal-insulator transition in an ultrathin archetypal refractory plasmonic material, hafnium nitride (HfN). Epitaxial HfN thick films exhibit a low-loss and high-quality Drude-like plasmon resonance in the visible spectral range 6,7. However, as the film thickness is reduced to nanoscale dimensions, the Coulomb interaction among electrons increases due to the electron confinement, leading to the spatial dispersion of the plasma frequency 8,9. Importantly, with the further decrease in thickness, electrons lose their ability to shield the incident electric field, turning the medium into a dielectric. The breakdown of the plasmon resonance in epitaxial ultrathin metals could be useful for fundamental physics studies in transdimensional regimes 10 and novel photonic device applications. © 2024, CC BY.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has become a worldwide *** patients of COVID-19 suffer from a high mortality rate,motivating the development of convenient and practical methods that allow clinicians to promptly identify high-risk ***,we have developed a risk score using clinical data from 1479 inpatients admitted to Tongji Hospital,Wuhan,China(development cohort)and externally validated with data from two other centers:141 inpatients from Jinyintan Hospital,Wuhan,China(validation cohort 1)and 432 inpatients from The Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen,Shenzhen,China(validation cohort 2).The risk score is based on three biomarkers that are readily available in routine blood samples and can easily be translated into a probability of *** risk score can predict the mortality of individual patients more than 12 d in advance with more than 90%accuracy across all ***,the Kaplan-Meier score shows that patients can be clearly differentiated upon admission as low,intermediate,or high risk,with an area under the curve(AUC)score of *** summary,a simple risk score has been validated to predict death in patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2);it has also been validated in independent cohorts.

Deep learning-based Autonomous Driving (AD) semantic segmentation (SSeg) models often exhibit poor generalization due to data heterogeneity in an ever domain-shifting environment. While Federated Learning (FL) could improve the generalization of an AD SSeg model (known as FedAD system), conventional models often struggle with under-fitting as the amount of accumulated training data progressively increases. To address this issue, instead of conventional small models, employing Large Vision Models (LVMs) in FedAD is a viable option for better learning of representations from a vast volume of data. However, implementing LVMs in FedAD introduces three challenges: (I) the extremely high communication overheads associated with transmitting LVMs between participating vehicles and a central server;(II) lack of computing resource to deploy LVMs on each vehicle;(III) the performance drop due to LVM focusing on shared features but overlooking local vehicle characteristics. To overcome these challenges, we propose pFedLVM, a LVM-Driven, Latent Feature-Based Personalized Federated Learning framework. In this approach, the LVM is deployed only on central server, which effectively alleviates the computational burden on individual vehicles. Furthermore, the exchange between central server and vehicles are the learned features rather than the LVM parameters, which significantly reduces communication overhead. In addition, we utilize both shared features from all participating vehicles and individual characteristics from each vehicle to establish a personalized learning mechanism. This enables each vehicle’s model to learn features from others while preserving its personalized characteristics, thereby outperforming globally shared models trained in general FL. Extensive experiments demonstrate that pFedLVM outperforms the existing state-of-the-art approach by 18.47%, 25.60%, 51.03% and 14.19% in terms of mIoU, mF1, mPrecision and mRecall, respectively. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive form of memory loss that worsens over time. Detecting it early, when memory issues are mild, is crucial for effective interventions. Recent advancements in computer technology, specifically Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), have proven to be powerful tools for analyzing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data comprehensively. In this study, we developed a GCN framework for diagnosing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by examining the functional connectivity (FC) derived from resting-state functional MRI (rfMRI) data. Our research systematically explored various types and processing methods of FC, evaluating their performance on the OASIS-3 dataset. The experimental results revealed several key findings. On the one hand, the proposed GCN exhibited significantly superior performance over both the baseline GCN and the Support Vector Machine (SVM) models, with statistically significant differences. It attained the highest average accuracy of 80.3% and a peak accuracy of 88.2%. On the other hand, the GCN frame work obtained using individual FCs showed overall slightly better performance than the one using global FCs. However, it is important to note that GCNs using global networks with appropriate connectivity can achieve comparable or even better performance than individual networks in certain cases. Finally, our results also indicate that the connectivity within specific brain regions, such as VIS, DMN, SMN, VAN, and FPC, may play a more significant role in GCN-based MRI classification for MCI diagnosis. These findings significantly contribute to the understanding of neurodegenerative disorders and offer valuable insights into the diverse ap plications of GCNs in brain analysis and disease detection. © 2024 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Design of the PID temperature controller for an alkaline electrolysis system with time delays

Electrolysis systems use proportional-integral-derivative (PID) temperature controllers to maintain stack temperatures around set points. However, heat transfer delays in electrolysis systems cause manual tuning of PID temperature controllers to be time-consuming, and temperature oscillations often occur. This paper focuses on the design of the PID temperature controller for an alkaline electrolysis system to achieve fast and stable temperature control. A thermal dynamic model of an electrolysis system is established in the frequency-domain for controller designs. Based on this model, the temperature stability is analysed by the root distribution, and the PID parameters are optimized considering both the temperature overshoot and the settling time. The performance of the optimal PID controllers is verified through experiments. Furthermore, the simulation results show that the before-stack temperature should be used as the feedback variable for small lab-scale systems to suppress stack temperature fluctuations, and the after-stack temperature should be used for larger systems to improve the economy. This paper researches the system evaluations of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted satellite aerial terrestrial integrated systems. To ensure the stability of the regarded network, a link selection scheme is presented to get the balance between the system performance and the system efficiency. Besides, in order to build a practical environment of the transmission networks, the imperfect hardware, channel estimation errors and co-channel interference are both considered in the networks. Relied on the above considerations, the detailed analysis for the outage behaviors is shown along with the asymptotic outage probability in high signal-to-noise ratio scenarios. Moreover, the diversity order and coding gain are also provided to give fast methods to confirm the system evaluation. Finally, some re-presentative simulations are provided to confirm the efficiency and advantage of analytical results and the proposed link selection scheme. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

During the outbreak of infectious diseases, individual always make some adaptive response to avoid infected the diseases. In this paper, we introduce SIRS model on scale-free networks that take into account behavioral memory and time delay to depict individuals’ adaptive feedback, which is better characterize the actual spread of epidemics. We address uniform persistence and find that the model has the sharp threshold property, that is, for the basic reproduction number less than one, the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, while for the basic reproduction number is above one, the endemic equilibrium is globally stable. We further analyze the effects of two control strategies (the vaccination of susceptible people and treatment of infected people) on epidemic dynamics by optimal control strategy. The existence and uniqueness of the optimal control strategy are obtained. Finally, we perform some stochastic network simulations that yield quantitative agreement with the deterministic mean-field approach. The final results show that the effect of time delay does not change the basic reproduction number, but it plays an important role in the process of disease transmission. The behavioral memory is able to affect the basic reproduction number, and it has important and positive implications for disease transmission and control. The work of this paper can provide a theoretical basis and reference for the prediction and prevention of infectious diseases. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Thermal Modelling and Controller Design of an Alkaline Electrolysis System under Dynamic Operating Conditions

Thermal management is vital for the efficient and safe operation of alkaline electrolysis systems. Traditional alkaline electrolysis systems use simple proportional-integral-differentiation (PID) controllers to maintain the stack temperature near the rated value. However, in renewable-to-hydrogen scenarios, the stack temperature is disturbed by load fluctuations, and the temperature overshoot phenomenon occurs which can exceed the upper limit and harm the stack. This paper focuses on the thermal modelling and controller design of an alkaline electrolysis system under dynamic operating conditions. A control-oriented thermal model is established in the form of a third-order time-delay process, which is used for simulation and controller design. Based on this model, we propose two novel controllers to reduce temperature overshoot: one is a current feed-forward PID controller (PID-I), the other is a model predictive controller (MPC). Their performances are tested on a lab-scale system and the experimental results are satisfying: the temperature overshoot is reduced by 2.2◦C with the PID-I controller, and no obvious overshoot is observed with the MPC controller. Furthermore, the thermal dynamic performance of an MW-scale alkaline electrolysis system is analyzed by simulation, which shows that the temperature overshoot phenomenon is more general in large systems.
