In this paper, power adaptation for a transmit antenna diversity system is considered in Rayleigh fading channels. The optimal space-time domain power adaptation that minimizes the average bit error rate is analytically derived subject to a fixed average power constraint. Our results show that the proposed space-time domain power adaptation scheme has a significant performance gain over the conventional power adaptation in the space domain only.

We analyze the performance of closed-loop transmit diversity systems in the presence of feedback delay and channel estimation error in Rayleigh time-selective flat fading. We formulate both the feedback delay and the channel estimation error as a function of Doppler spread, and derive the average bit error probability under such imperfect channel information. It is shown that the channel estimation error is more sensitive to system performance than feedback delay in slow fading environments.

Multiple additively constrained path selection.

Finding a feasible path subject to multiple constraints in a network is an NP-complete problem and has been extensively studied. However, current algorithms suffer either high computational complexity or low success ratio in finding feasible paths. The authors propose a novel extended Bellman–Ford algorithm (EB), from which they present a high-performance algorithm with low computational complexity in finding feasible paths with multiple additive constraints. Through analysis and simulations, it is shown that the algorithm outperforms its contenders in the success rate of finding a feasible path as well as in terms of scalability; the proposed algorithm can achieve almost 100% success ratio as long as a feasible path exists. Furthermore, the worst case computational complexity is only twice that of the Bellman–Ford algorithm.

To guarantee quality of service (QoS), the requirements for video transmission such as delay and cell loss rate (CLR) are very stringent. These constraints are difficult to meet if high network utilization is desired. Dynamic bandwidth allocation is thus needed. Video traffic prediction can play an important role in dynamic bandwidth allocation and traffic management in high speed networks. We propose a fast convergent algorithm to predict the variation of I frames, based on which the bandwidth is assigned. The new algorithm can achieve fast convergence and small prediction error.

This paper presents an approach for generating test data for unit-level, and possibly integration-level, testing based on sampling over intervals of the input probability distribution, i.e., one that has been divided or layered according to criteria. Our approach is termed "spathic" as it selects random values felt to be most likely or least likely to occur from a segmented input probability distribution. Also, it allows the layers to be further segmented if additional test data is required later in the test cycle. The spathic approach finds a middle ground between the more difficult to achieve adequacy criteria and random test data generation, and requires less effort on the part of the tester. It can be viewed as guided random testing, with the tester specifying some information about expected input. The spathic test data generation approach can be used to augment "intelligent" manual unit-level testing. An initial case study suggests that spathic test sets defect more faults than random test data sets, and achieve higher levels of statement and branch coverage.

High-speed, switched networks present scalability challenges to a network intrusion detection system, both in terms of the volume of data that must be analyzed, and the extent to which sensors must be inserted into the switched network to achieve comprehensive visibility. An architecture that uses a single point for intrusion assessment would quickly become overwhelmed with incoming event data from intrusion sensors that are deployed on even a moderate number of high-speed links. This is particularly true if an earnest attack (generating many events in a short period of time) is underway. The authors propose a novel architecture that hierarchically distributes the assessment function into two assessment categories - tactical assessment, and strategic assessment. The tactical assessment function provides low-level event correlation and decision making for a small sub-network (e.g., a department LAN, an ATM switch peer group, etc.), and is capable of providing fast, real-time response when millisecond response times are required due to network attacks. The strategic assessment function, on the other hand, implements high-level event correlation, which is useful when a larger view of the network is required (e.g., for low intensity or distributed attacks). The tactical assessment engines interface to the strategic assessment engine by, filtering and summarizing low-level events, ensuring that the strategic assessment engine's workload remains manageable. This paper describes the distributed intrusion assessment architecture in more detail, presents a few application scenarios that benefit from hierarchical attack assessment, and summarizes ongoing work in developing prototype components for this architecture.

The enhanced Birkhoff-von Neumann decomposition (EBVND) algorithm, a new class-of scheduling algorithms for input queued (IQ) switches, is introduced. Theoretical analysis shows that the performance of EBVND is better than the Birkhoff-von Neumann decomposition algorithm in terms of throughput and cell delay, and can also provide rate and cell delay guarantees. Wave front Birkhoff-von Neumann decomposition (WFBVND) algorithm and its simplified version WFBVND with logN iterations (WFBVND-logN), the special cases of EBVND, are also introduced and evaluated. Simulations show that WFBVND and WFBVND-logN have much lower average cell delay as compared to the Birkhoff-von Neumann decomposition algorithm.

This paper examines the use of cell injection to change the observable characteristics of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) ATM connections most commonly used to transport compressed video. Cell Injection is a technique for masking Virtual Connection (VC) utilization in ATM networks from undesired third parties by altering the flow of traffic over the connection. We model the cell injection process as a Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) and discuss both the theoretical and applied aspects of the cell injection approach. Aggregate bounds for sustained cell rate (SCR) and mean burst size (MBS) are derived using the Cruz bound. Analytic results are compared with measurements of real cell-injected ATM traffic and the effects of injection on the original traffic are summarized. The results demonstrate that VBR characteristics can be effectively masked within reason. Further, an interesting side effect is that cell injection shifts the power in the mid and high frequency regions towards low frequency regions, which is the dominant factor in queue length distributions. © 2001 IEEE.

We propose the queue length proportional (QLP) assignment algorithm for input queued switches that considers buffer management and scheduling mechanism inclusively to obtain an optimal assignment of both bandwidth and buffer space according to the real traffic load. The bandwidth assignment is implemented by considering both bandwidth and backlogged queue lengths, so that it is possible to obtain a high throughput as well as a low cell loss ratio at the same time. QLP is shown to be able to maximize overall throughputs and improve buffer utilization as compared to those which treat buffer management and scheduling as separate functions.
