Remote quantum entanglement can enable numerous applications including distributed quantum computation, secure communication, and precision sensing. In this paper, we consider how a quantum network-nodes equipped with limited quantum processing capabilities connected via lossy optical links-can distribute high-rate entanglement simultaneously between multiple pairs of users (multiple flows). We develop protocols for such quantum "repeater" nodes, which enable a pair of users to achieve large gains in entanglement rates over using a linear chain of quantum repeaters, by exploiting the diversity of multiple paths in the network. Additionally, we develop repeater protocols that enable multiple user pairs to generate entanglement simultaneously at rates that can far exceed what is possible with repeaters time sharing among assisting individual entanglement flows. Our results suggest that the early-stage development of quantum memories with short coherence times and implementations of probabilistic Bell-state measurements can have a much more profound impact on quantum networks than may be apparent from analyzing linear repeater chains. This framework should spur the development of a general quantum network theory, bringing together quantum memory physics, quantum information theory, and computer network theory. Different service providers in the cloud computing environment assume different responsibilities. Software as a Service (SaaS) providers have to respond to users' requests within an acceptable deadline determined in their Service Level Agreement (SLA) contracts, while Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers mostly care about the infrastructural resources. Power and cooling management and pricing of available resources are concerns of IaaS providers. The goal of an SaaS provider is to maximize the revenue from SLAs and minimize the cost of using IaaS resources. An IaaS provider wants to maximize the prices of its own resources that it charges its clients, and at the same time minimize the total power consumption of infrastructural resources. Each provider's decision may affect the other providers' strategies. In this paper, we propose a power-aware algorithm for both IaaS and SaaS providers to jointly and optimally control the admission rate and allocate the resources. We simulate different scenarios to substantiate the viability of our proposed scheme.

As a non-invasive angle closure glaucoma diagnosis procedure, Van Herick's slit-lamp Limbal Anterior Chamber Depth Estimation (LACDE) technique is preferably the current standard screening method preliminarily performed at hospitals and eye clinics. However, accuracy of depth estimation is very much dependent on the slit projection distance from the limbus (LD). This study investigated the relation and designed a parametric model to reduce the inconsistencies between results and improving the Van Herick's method accuracy. Additionally, two different types of classifiers such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree with addition of LD as a predictor were trained and tested for comparison with parametric model. In the end acquired results clearly showed the effectiveness of LD consideration in LACDE, which lead to improvement in the experimental results.

It is well known that the information theoretic multiple access channel capacity region is known to be achieved by successive decoding schemes. In this paper, we study a distributed multiple access scheme in OFDMA-based wireless multihop networks. As a solution, we propose a game-theoretic resource allocation and decoding order control scheme, which is based on iterative multi-unit second price auction. The key concept of the proposed scheme is to update the auction value based on the difference between current and target bidding efficiency. We prove our proposal's convergence and stability through analysis and show its performance using simulation. It achieves around 80% of the full-search-based sum throughput while providing inter-user and inter-subchannel fairness. © 2015 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The integration of information and communication technologies with renewable energy sources will upgrade the conventional power distribution network to a Smart Grid, a smart and economic network, which can reduce power loss and carbon footprints. The power distribution network in the Smart Grid can be regarded as composing of multiple microgrids that include the customers, micro-sources and controllers. We propose the Adaptive-Economic Power Distribution Algorithm (AEPDA), which adaptively changes the topology of the distribution network in order to reduce the power transmission distance and maximize the utilization of renewable energy sources. The algorithm works in two operation states: the "online" mode when the microgrids are connected to the main power transmission grids and the "off-line" mode when the microgrids are disconnected from the main grid and are islanded. In the "on-line" mode, the On-Line Economic Microgrids Coalition Algorithm (OLEMCA) can form optimal coalitions among the mirco-grids;in the "off-line" mode, the Off-Line Micro-sources Coalition Algorithm (OLMCA) optimizes the coalitions among the micro-generators in each microgrid. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can reduce the power loss in the "on-line" mode and reduce costs for the customers in the "off-line" mode.

With the development of green energy technologies, base stations (BSs) can be powered by green energy in order to reduce the on-grid power consumption, and subsequently reduce the carbon footprints. As smart grid advances, power trading among distributed power generators and energy consumers will be enabled. In this paper, we have investigated the optimization of smart grid enabled mobile networks in which green energy is generated in individual BSs and can be shared among the BSs. In order to minimize the on-grid power consumption of this network, we have proposed to jointly optimize the BS operation and the power distribution. The joint BS operation and Power distribution Optimization (BPO) problem is challenging due to the complex coupling of the optimization of mobile networks and that of power grid. We have proposed an approximation solution that decomposes the BPO problem into two subproblems and solves the BPO by address these subproblems. The simulation results show that by jointly optimizing the BS operation and the power distribution, the network achieves about 18% on-grid power savings.

Green communications has received much attention recently. For cellular networks, the base stations (BSs) account for more than 50 percent of the energy consumption of the networks. Therefore, reducing the power consumption of BSs is crucial to greening cellular networks. With the development of green energy technologies, BSs can be powered by green energy in order to reduce the on-grid power consumption, and subsequently reduce the carbon footprints. In this paper, we have proposed a distributed scheme to enable Green-energy Aware and Latency Aware (GALA) user-BS associations in heterogeneous cellular networks whose BSs are powered by both on-grid power and green energy. The GALA algorithm considers both the traffic delivery latency and the green energy generation rate in BSs for determining the user-BS association. We have proved that the GALA algorithm converges to the optimal solution which minimizes the summation of the weighted latency ratios of BSs. The simulation results show that the GALA algorithm enables the trade-off between the on-grid power consumption and the average traffic delivery latency, and saves a significant amount of on-grid power in heterogeneous cellular networks that are powered by both on-grid power and green energy.

Power consumption is a critically important issue for data centers. Virtual machine (VM) consolidation is fundamentally employed to improve resource utilization and power optimization in modern data centers. In general, VM consolidation is formulated as a vector bin packing problem, which is a well-known NP-hard problem. Hence, heuristic algorithms, such as single dimensional heuristics (e.g., first fit decreasing (FFD)) and dimension-aware heuristics (e.g., DotProduct), are usually deployed in practice for VM consolidation. However, all of these previous heuristic algorithms did not sufficiently explore the heterogeneity of the VMs' resource requirements. In this paper, we propose several heterogeneity aware dominant resource assistant heuristic algorithms for VM consolidation. The performance evaluations validate the effects of the proposed heterogeneity aware heuristics on VM consolidation. The proposed heuristics can achieve quite similar consolidation performance as dimension-aware heuristics with almost the same computational cost as those of the single dimensional heuristics.

Existing work in pharmacokinetics, the study of the movement of drugs in the body, has largely focused on multicompartmental models, based on ordinary first-order equations with constant flow. Nano-scale Particulate Drug Delivery Systems (PDDS) require better computational models. PDDS has been previously abstracted by the same authors as Molecular Communication (MC) systems, by solving the advection-diffusion problem with time-varying flow. In this paper, this framework is extended to solve the nanoparticle-body interactions problem. The delay and path loss of the system are expressed analytically. The results are validated by finite-element simulations. This model will enable more thorough pharmacokinetics than multicompartmental models.
