In this paper, two technologies of metamaterial for microwave wireless power transfer are shown. One is a zeroth-order resonance for a microwave snow melting system, and another one is a focusing reflector for realizing of a highly efficient wireless power transfer space. A zeroth-order resonance leads a uniformed microwave heating and a flexibility of feeding in a snow melting system. Focusing reflector can make some electromagnetic hot and null points in a space. These are expected to be required technologies for highly efficient wireless power transfer. © 2024 IEEE.

Reinforcement learning, deep learning, and deep reinforcement learning can effectively acquire action rules for the autonomous motion of objects. However, some researchers have reported that the machine learning process requires a large amount of learning time. Besides, the process needs to consider the similarity of the environment between the training target and the test target. There is no such thing as driving only on a course learned in advance in actual autonomous driving. In this study, we have used a transfer learning algorithm for autonomous drivings for model cars. The training target for acquiring the learning model and the actual driving courses are changed. In this study, we report on the effectiveness of transfer learning using a model car as the basis for a learning model acquired by reinforcement learning. © 2021 IEEE.

At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS), robots are used to propel the decommissioning work. Creating a 3D map of the internal environment of the decommissioning work is a necessary technology for improving the working efficiency of a decommissioning robot. The purpose of this research is to realize a 3D map creating a system using a camera by operating the humanoid general-purpose robot Pepper using the Robot Operating system (ROS) and implementing and executing Visual SLAM. The system aims to be applied to a decommissioning robot in the future. In this study, we implemented Visual SLAM methods R-tab Map, which is a method for constructing 3D maps in real-time, and Large-Scale Direct SLAM, which is method that generates a map using luminance with a large gradient between frames without using features for map generation. We also compared and evaluated the effectiveness of the generated maps. Besides, the robot was manually operated using nao_teleop, which can operate Pepper from the ROS library with the PS3 controller, the visualization software rviz, and the point cloud visualization library PointCloudViewer. Using two Visual SLAM's methods, we implemented the experiment. During the experiment, a chair was placed in front of Pepper as an obstacle. In this environment, Pepper was rotated 360 [deg] by manual operation. However, nao_teleop and Visual SLAM methods caused a conflict between the manual operation of Pepper and the 3D map generation process, and both processes stopped. Therefore, the 3D map wasn't generated. To resolve the conflict with operation, Pepper was moved by human and the experiment was again. As a result, the camera image obtained from Pepper was distorted, the map could not be optimized. Therefore, the part of 3D map was only generated. For this reason, to realize a 3D map generation system, it was important to properly calibrate the camera that could acquire a flat image without distortion.

Deformation in axial compression of aluminum tubular structures with ribs

Dynamic compression behavior of various kinds of polygonal tubular structures with ribs are investigated. Square hollow structures and that with rib reinforcement of aluminum extrusions are in dynamic axial compression, using a drop hammer. Numerical simulation was also conducted for the wider variety of cross-sectional shapes and reinforcements. The effect of the axial length, cross-sectional shape and reinforcing rib arrangement on the deformation behavior were investigated. Comparable compressive force was obtained when the cross-sectional area of the structure is similar, even if the number of edges in cross-section increases from four (square) to eight. Rib reinforcement is very effective for the improvement of the crush or energy absorbing performance. Deformation behavior was successfully predicted by the numerical simulation. Numerical simulation of the compression of the various polygonal tubular structures with radial ribs was also carried out. The number of radial ribs in cross-section of the polygonal hollow structure has a positive relationship to the deformation constraint at corners and the torsional rigidity, consequently, the crush resistance increased. © 2019 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

The fatigue ratio [fatigue limit (?W) / tensile strength (?B)] of bulk metallic glass (BMG) was initially smaller by an order of magnitude than that of the crystalline structural alloys of 0.3 to 0.6. Then, the BMG was regarded as useless for structural members. However, the ?W/?B of BMGs increased with increasing the year, and recently a large value of about 0.8 was shown for a Ti-based BMG, and the maximum cyclic stress (?max) was about 90% of the ?B. Since BMG has no dislocation, it may not show fatigue. Therefore, in this report, using high-purity elements, the Zr-based BMG with less impurities and less defects was made by arc-melt Cu mold tilt casting method, which is expected to have less impurities or defects, and fatigue strength of the BMG was examined by also paying attention to the polishing of the specimen surface. As a result, higher value of the ?W/?B about 0.8 ~ 0.9, and the ?max/?B of about 0.9 ~ 1.0 were shown. In addition, the influence of increase in number of casting times with same master BMG, which raises the yield rate of the master BMG, on the ?B and ?W and the influence of the specimen surface polishing level on the ?W are reported. © 2019 Society of Materials Science Japan. This study examined the effect of the surface conditions on evaluating ductile cast iron matrix with the eddy current method. Specimens having matrix with various pearlite ratio were prepared. The surfaces of the specimens are machined by face mill and shaping machine with various cutting conditions. Surface roughness of the test piece was measured. Eddy current testing was carried out with an eddy current flaw tester. Cutting condition affects the eddy current signals especially when a worn cutting chip was used. Difference of matrix can be evaluated by using eddy current signals, but the surface machining has unignorable effect. © 2016, The WFO (The World Foundry Organization Ltd). All rights reserved.

Clustering is a fundamental tool for data analysis. Typically, all attributes of the data are used for clustering. However, if a set of attributes can be divided into meaningful subsets, it may be effective to cluster the data for each subset. In this paper, we propose a method for dividing the set of elements of feature vectors into meaningful subsets. Considering the dependencies between the elements, the correlation is used as the metric for clustering. In order to effectively solve the optimization problem, a technique for graph cut is used. After dividing the set of elements into subsets, clustering is performed for each subset. Experiments using a handwritten image database show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Sensor Network technologies are expected to be used in various kinds of application systems. Most of them, however, have been developed to work in a dedicated system. It is desired that various types of sensor networks could be operable in a same application system. To meet the requirement, we have studied middleware architecture named CMSAS (Common Middleware in Sensors, Actuators and Storages), which aims to realize virtual communications between various devices such as heterogeneous sensor networks, actuators and storages. In this paper, we propose the concept of CMSAS based on RT middleware, which was developed by National Institute of advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) to integrate components in robot technologies. We also discuss implementation design of CMSAS in wireless sensor networks to collect acceleration data. Copyright © 2014 ACM.
