This paper proposed a method to detect the license plate by using the Hu moment invariants and measure inter-vehicle distance. The method was aimed at practical driving-support system with single image sensor. Adaptive thresholding process made the detection robust against changes of brightness caused by weather changes, which have been a major problem of image processing in outdoor. Adaptive thresholding process achieved the detection rate of 93.2% This result shows that the robustness of the system has been improved. At a distance of 2 to 15 m, the error rate was about 4 to 6 %and the average absolute error rate was 4.75 % The average time for all processes was 44.67 ms, which shows that this method operates at a maximum speed of about 22.39 fps.

Wells turbine, widely used to harness the wave energy, has high efficiency at a low flow rate. However, it has severe stall problem. In order to alleviate this problem, a dual-turbine system of Wells turbine with a booster impulse turbine was proposed. In the present study, the effect of impulse turbine geometries on the performance of combined turbine system was investigated by CFD analysis. As a result, the boosting effect of impulse turbine depends on the pressure differences that caused by the setting angles at a high flow rate. Moreover, the decrease of flow rate with the setting angle has a significant influence on the efficiency. © 2018, Turbomachinery Society of Japan. All rights reserved.

Transient characteristics of a centrifugal pump at rapid startup

Experimental and CFD studies were carried out on transient behaviors of a centrifugal pump during rapid startup. Relationship between the transient characteristics and a flow field in the centrifugal pump was investigated during the transient period of the centrifugal pump. Instantaneous pressure and flow rate were measured at suction and discharge ports with rotational speed during the transient operations. The pump suction and delivery pressures were measured using strain gauge type pressure transducers. And unsteady flow rate was calculated from pressure difference between two pressure measurement points in the straight pipe of the pump suction and discharge lines using the difference of inertia force. Transient characteristics during transient period were related to the time-dependent flow field, which was investigated using CFD, in the pump. As a result of the present study, it was shown that the transient characteristics in experiments were larger than a quasi-steady change at early transient stage, and then that characteristics gradually approaches to the quasi-steady change. And from CFD results, it was shown that the flow field in pump at this early transient stage did not develop enough compared with that at the quasi-steady change. Moreover, from the experimental and CFD results, the deviation of dynamic operation loci from the quasi-steady change during pump startup period occurs at a large flow rate acceleration. The reason is thought to be due to that the flow field at large flow rate change cannot develop compared with that at the quasi-steady change.

A Counter-Rotating Impulse Turbine for Wave Energy Conversion

Wave energy can be converted to the electrical energy by using a wave energy converter. The wave energy converter with oscillating water column (OWC) is one of the most promising devices because of its simple structure and easy maintenance. In this device, an oscillating water column due to the wave motion is used to drive an air column. An air turbine is used to convert the pneumatic energy of this bi-directional airflow into the mechanical energy. The counter-rotating impulse turbine for wave energy conversion has been proposed and tested so far, and the average efficiency has been shown to about 0.3. On the contrary, in another offshore experiment, it has been reported that the power generation efficiency of this turbine is larger than Wells turbine in case of small waves. However, there is a scarcity of the detailed characteristics data of counter-rotating impulse turbine. In a previous study, the authors investigated the effect of rotor blade solidity and setting angle of guide vane on the performance of this turbine, and they clarified that the efficiency of this turbine is higher than impulse turbine with single rotor in the range of high flow coefficients. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of rotor blade profile on the turbine performance by using the computation fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The inner and outer angles of turbine rotor blade are changed in the range of 50° to 70°. The commercial CFD software of SCRYU/Tetra of Cradle Co. Ltd. was used in the present work. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were used as the governing equations and the low Reynold’s number SST k-ω model was used to predict the turbulent stresses. As a result, it was found that the inner angle of γ = 70° and the outer angle of γ = 60° of the turbine rotor blades can give the best turbine efficiency and it shows the efficiency close to the impulse turbine with single rotor, even in the range of low flow coefficients.

In this paper, a bit error rate testing system has been developed and the transmission quality of visible light communication was studied. An optimization of reference voltage of the comparator was performed. A measured bit error rate was less than 10~(-7) without a disturbance light. This result indicates that the developed system is applicable in indoor communication. A bit error rate clearly became worse when the disturbance light was inserted. The results showed that this testing system is possible to evaluate quantitatively the effect of disturbance light. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the input of comparator was calculated, and measured bit error rate was plotted versus SNR. However, a difference between measurement and theoretical curve was observed. To reduce this difference, the review of noise source and the improvement of the mounting method for transmitter/receiver, will be required.

Rural area in Indonesia of which electrification ratio is still low has a strong demand for off-grid electric power supply. On the other hand, Indonesia is a leading natural rubber production country and these rubber wood trees are cultivated in vast plantation farms. A rubber wood tree is woody biomass resource which can be stably supplied because a lot of trees aged more than 25 years are logged and nursery trees are planted constantly. Woody biomass is burned directly as solid fuel and the generated thermal energy can be applied only for room heating or cooking. Otherwise, direct conversion of biomass to electric energy requires a large scale equipment such as a boiler and a steam turbine, whereas gasified woody biomass can be easily handled and can have wide application. A closed gasifier chamber which was kept vacuum and fulfilled with gas yield during gasification was recently developed by the authors for indirect gasification. It was confirmed that generated gas by the gasifier is clean and can be directly used to drive an engine generator to supply electricity. In this study, planer dust of rubber wood is used as gasification feedstock for indirect gasifying in the closed gasifier chamber, and effects of heating temperature and moisture content on gasification performance are discussed to examine characteristics of the closed gasifier chamber in details.

Simple and low-cost method for the measurement of inter-vehicle distance has been developed. Proposed method is based on geometric similarity between an object on the rear surface of a vehicle and its image on image sensor. Size of the object should be well-known or be informed using visible light communication. This time, a license plate was used as the object during the day, and a distance between tail lamps was used during the night. After image processing, the size or length of the objects on the image sensor was computed. Thus, inter-vehicle distance was expressed as a product of similitude ratio and focal length of a digital imaging device. Distance measurements were performed from 2 to 15 m at day and night. Using this method, less than ±5% error ratios have been obtained at almost all of measurement points. Results indicate that the method would be an alternative of established ranging methods for driving safety support systems.

This paper describes a magnetic tactile sensor with Indium antimonide (InSb) Hall elements that enables multifunctional tactile sensing devices to detect normal contact forces and temperature. InSb Hall elements are generally used as magnetic sensors. The proposed sensor consists of two InSb Hall elements and a magnet that are embedded in silicone rubber, which functions as artificial skin. Here, the normal contact force is detected by the variation in distance between the Hall elements and the magnet. The temperature characteristics of the InSb Hall elements depend on the bias circuit to generate the Hall voltage. Two output Hall voltages driven by two kinds of bias circuits are measured in the normal contact force range from 0 to 90 N, and for a temperature range of 0 to 50°C. The inverse response surfaces that are used to identify the normal contact force and temperature are formulated using experimental results. The results obtained show that it is possible to detect normal contact force and temperature by obtaining two kinds of Hall voltages. © 2015 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

In this paper, we propose a new switching median filter with signal dependent thresholds designed by a genetic algorithm (GA). The switching median filter detects noise-corrupted pixels based on a threshold. Then it restores only the detected pixels. The present switching median filter deals with the random-valued impulse noises, whose distribution is ideally assumed as a uniform distribution. In the present method, the switching median filter, which has two kinds of the thresholds, is introduced. One is switching thresholds to detect the noise, and the other is selecting thresholds to choose the suitable switching threshold. As the suitable selecting threshold, a variance of signals is used. Then all of the switching and selecting thresholds of the proposed switching median filter are automatically optimized by using GA. To optimize the thresholds with GA, distribution distance between the assumed and the detected noises is employed as a fitness function. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by some experiments.

Question answering generally generates the answer to the question by extracting the named entity from the sentences containing the answer to the question from information sources. However, it is not always true that a named entity is an answer to the question. So we propose a method for generating the answer sentence using statistical machine translation. The probability models are constructed by learning from enormous samples of the set of question sentence, extracted sentence, and answer sentence. The question sentence and the sentence extracted by the question answering from information source are regarded as an input of machine translation. They are translated to a suitable answer sentence to the question. In this paper, we attempted to apply our method to several simple types questions that can also be answered by the named entity extraction.
