Mean-shift algorithm shows robust performances in various object-tracking technologies including face tracking. Due to its robustness and accuracy, mean-shift algorithm is regarded as one of the best ways to apply in object-tracking technology in computer vision fields. However, it has a drawback of getting into a bottleneck state when faced with a speedy object moving beyond its window size within one image frame interval time. The time required to calculate mean-shift vector could be much lessened with lesser memory when color model is adjusted to the previously known target information. This paper shows the building process of target-adjusted model with a non-uniform quantization. The target color model dealt in this paper is the one used for deriving mean-shift vector. It is a kernel model containing both the color and distance information. This paper gives scheme to efficiently deal with color information in the model. Through a proper selection of color bins, unimportant color values were reduced to a small amount. As a result, the computing time of the mean-shift vector in face-tracking was shortened while maintaining robustness and accuracy.

In this paper, a simple method is proposed to evolve artificial neural networks(ANNs) using augmenting weight matrix method(AWMM). ANNs' architecture and connection weights can be evolved simultaneously by AWMM, and their structures incrementally are growing up from minimal structure. It is a non-mating method. It employs 5 mutation operators: add connection, add node, delete connection, delete node, and new initial weight. And the connection weight is trained by the simplified alopex method, which is a correlation based method for solving optimization problem. In AWMM, structural information is encoded to weighting matrix, and the matrix is augmenting as the hidden nodes are added.

Emerging 64 bitOSpsilas supply a huge amount of memory address space that is essential for new applications using very large data. It is expected that the memory in connected nodes can be used to store swapped pages efficiently, especially in a dedicated cluster which has a high-speed network such as 10 GbE and Infiniband. In this paper, we propose the distributed large memory system (DLM), which provides very large virtual memory by using remote memory distributed over the nodes in a cluster. The performance of DLM programs using remote memory is compared to ordinary programs using local memory. The results of STREAM, NPB and Himeno benchmarks show that the DLM achieves better performance than other remote paging schemes using a block swap device to access remote memory. In addition to performance, DLM offers the advantages of easy availability and high portability, because it is a user-level software without the need for special hardware. To obtain high performance, the DLM can tune its parameters independently from kernel swap parameters. We also found that DLMpsilas independence of kernel swapping provides more stable behavior.

Sixty-two years after the first photos of earth taken by a camera aboard a V-2 rocket in October, 1946, and forty-eight years since the first CORONA satellite images were captured, the status of remote sensing research and applications within the African continent has made dramatic progress. Many African countries now have remote sensing research centers, within government agencies, research institutes and universities. Some countries in Africa currently have earth observing and/or telecommunications satellites in orbit and/or have such assets in various planning stages. The authors document such progress, in addition to the constraints to further applications of remote sensing for sustainable development in Africa, with special reference to data distribution constraints. Moreover, the authors address the urgency for bandwidth improvements within the African continent, so as to enable sustainable development initiatives to benefit from advances in high performance computing, required for ab initio near-real-time analysis of satellite-data. Such capabilities, it is argued, are propaedeutic for time-critical initiatives, such as vulnerability assessment, disaster preparedness and mitigation, emergency response, humanitarian assistance and post-calamity reconstruction, associated with a wide array of biogenic and anthropogenic disasters. Case studies of advances in infrastructure for satellite remote sensing and high performance computing, with implications for sustainable development in Africa, are provided from Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.

Many public transit agencies are exploring ways in which alternative fuels can be utilized to reduce our nation s dependency on imported oil and to avoid the environmental impacts associated with the combustion of petroleum products. Of all the alternative fuel options, electricity is among the most desirable in terms of affordability, availability, security, and sustainability. Unfortunately, limitations in battery technology result in electric vehicle operating ranges that are much lower than those of internal combustion-powered vehicles. Although opportunity charging is one strategy for increasing the driving range of electric buses by means of a series of brief recharges during normally scheduled midday layovers, it has yet to be embraced by the transit industry, in part because of the difficulties involved in having drivers connect and disconnect the bus from the charger at regular intervals throughout the day. Roadway-mounted inductively-coupled power transfer systems effectively remove this constraint by automating the charge process, thereby obviating the need for driver intervention. Ultracapacitor energy storage systems offer advantages over battery systems for such applications.

There is a clinical need for HIV protease inhibitors that can evade resistance mutations. One possible approach to designing such inhibitors relies upon the crystallographic observation that the substrates of HIV protease occupy a rather constant region within the binding site. In particular, it has been hypothesized that inhibitors which lie within this region will tend to resist clinically relevant mutations. The present study offers the first prospective evaluation of this hypothesis, via computational design of inhibitors predicted to conform to the substrate envelope, followed by synthesis and evaluation against wild-type and mutant proteases, as well as structural studies of complexes of the designed inhibitors with HIV protease. The results support the utility of the substrate envelope hypothesis as a guide to the design of robust protease inhibitors.
