Edge detection is an important topic in image processing and a main tool in pattern recognition and image segmentation. Many edge detection techniques are available in the literature. 'A number of recent edge detectors are multiscale and include three main processing steps: smoothing, differentiation and labeling' (Ziau and Tabbone, 1997). This paper, presents a proposed method which is suitable for edge detection in images. This method is based on the use of the clustering algorithms (Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-Means) and a gray scale edge detector (Canny, Generalized Edge Detector (GED)). It is shown that using the grayscale edge detectors may miss some parts of the edges which can be found using the proposed method.

This session relates directly to this year's conference theme Sparking Synergies: Bringing Research and Practice Together as it brings together researchers from different disciplines (information science and educational technology) to discuss current issues and trends related to Web usage across student populations. “Complex design problems require more knowledge than any single person possesses” (Arias, Eden, Fischer, Gorman, and Scharff, 2000, p. 84), thus each panelist will contribute highlights of his or her current research regarding the design, information, and pedagogical, needs of specific student populations (K-12 to higher education). After the panelists have presented their findings Diane Nahl will intertwine the threads of the panelists' conversations and, with the audience's assistance, begin to weave a fabric to uncover common usability issues.

Most edge detection algorithms include three main stages: smoothing, differentiation, and labeling. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of algorithms in which competitive learning is applied first to enhance edges, followed by an edge detector to locate the edges. In this way, more detailed and relatively more unbroken edges can be found as compared to the results when an edge detector is applied alone. The algorithms compared are K-Means, SOM and SOGR for clustering, and Canny and GED for edge detection. Perceptionally, best results were obtained with the GED-SOGR algorithm. The SOGR is also considerably simpler and faster than the SOM algorithm.

Discovering Planetary Nebula Geometries: Explorations with a Hierarchy of Models

Astronomical objects known as planetary nebulae (PNe) consist of a shell of gas expelled by an aging star. In cases where the gas shell can be assumed to be ellipsoidal, the PN can be easily modeled in three spatial dimensions. We utilize a model that joins the physics of PNe to this geometry and generates simulated nebular images. Hubble Space Telescope images of actual PNe provide data with which the model images may be compared. We employ Bayesian model estimation and search the parameter space for values that generate a match between observed and model images. The forward model is characterized by thirteen parameters; consequently model estimation requires the search of a 13‐dimensional parameter space. The ‘curse of dimensionality,’ compounded by a computationally intense forward problem, makes forward searches extremely time‐consuming and frequently causes them to become trapped in a local solution. We find that both the speed and quality of the search can be improved by reducing the dimensionality of the search *** basic approach utilizes a hierarchy of models of increasing complexity. Earlier studies establish that a hierarchical sequence converges more quickly, and to a better solution, than a search relying only on the most complex model. Here we report results for a hierarchy of five models. The first three models treat the nebula as a 2D image, estimating its position, angular size, orientation and rim thickness. The last two models explore its characteristics as a 3D object and enable us to characterize the physics of the nebula. This live‐model hierarchy is applied to real ellipsoidal PNe to estimate their geometric properties and gas density profiles.

Many new services have emerged to realize ubiquitous computing environments, owing to the increasing supply of mobile devices and more widespread Internet and wireless network facilities. We introduce the U-Campus (ubiquitous computing for campus) service. This study has been conducted through interdisciplinary research by four participating departments. The U-campus project is part of the UTOPIA project (Ubiquitous computing TOwn Project: Intelligent context Awareness), which covers town- and city-wide environments. Currently, a test bed for U-campus has been constructed to support various services suck as U-profile, U-messaging and U-campus tour guide services. Students, professors, school staffs, and campus visitors can easily access the various available campus services by using image-based sensors and mobile devices such as CDMA cellular phones or WiFi smart phones. The major purpose of this research is to provide a context-aware U-campus environment to users by utilizing sensors and mobile devices currently available in the public sector and the marketplace.

In this paper we consider a method for finding several eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of large-scale generalized eigenvalue problems. In this method, a small matrix pencil that has only the desired eigenvalues is derived using complex moments obtained via numerical integration. Since the process to derive the moments can be performed in parallel and we do not need to exchange data between processes, the presented method is suitable for master-worker programming models. We have implemented and tested the proposed method in a grid RPC (remote procedure call) system. Numerical examples illustrate the properties of our approach. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
