Automated Analog programming In Hybrid Systems: A Method of Making the Analog Computer Accessible to All Engineers

For the past year they have been engaged in the Academy Scholars Program which allows selected First Class Cadets at the Academy to devote the greater percentage of their academic hours to advanced study. Their investigation was entitled “Project AMTRAP” Automated Methods for Translating and Patching in Hybrid Systems. It concerned itself with the development of automatic methods for programming analog computers and the design and construction of a simple hybrid system for test purposes. Their work in the project forms the basis for this paper. They are currently assigned as student engineers on Coast Guard Cutters Ensign Hanna on the CASTLE ROCK in Boston Massachusetts and Ensign Millan on the MENDOTA based in Wilmington North Carolina. Both are members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Mass media competition and alternative ordering in social dynamics

We investigate the collective behavior of a system of social agents subject to the competition between two mass media influences considered as external fields. We study under what conditions either of two mass media with different intensities can impose its message to the majority. In addition to a collective state dominated by the stronger mass media and a disordered phase, we characterize two nontrivial effects as the parameters of the system are varied: (i) the appearance of a majority sharing the state of the weaker mass media, and (ii) the emergence of an alternative ordering in a state different from those of either media. We explore the dependence of both phenomena on the topology of the network of interactions. We show that the presence of long-range interactions rather than random connections is essential for the occurrence of both effects. The model can be extended to include multiple mass media and we illustrate it by considering three mass media fields acting on the system. The Optional Public Goods Game is a three-strategy game in which an individual can play as a cooperator or defector or decide not to participate. Despite its simplicity, this model can effectively represent many human social dilemmas, such as those found in the use of public services, environmental concerns, or other activities related to society. In this contribution, we present a comprehensive analysis of the conditions under which spontaneous, sustained cooperation emerges and the characteristics of these cooperative states. Through simulations, we demonstrate the conditions leading to the coexistence of the three strategies in a steady state or the alternate dominance of each strategy in a rock-paper-scissors fashion. The results identify each of the possible scenarios in terms of two key parameters: the multiplication rate of the public good game (reward) and the size of the group of potential players. We also discuss other details of the game that may influence the appearance of cycles, along with relevant characteristics of these cycles, such as the prevalence of cooperation. ROLE OF SIMULATION IN RAPID PROTOTYPING FOR CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

作者： KING, JF BARTON, DE J. Fred King:is the manager of the Advanced Technology Department for Unisys in Reston Virginia. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Houston in 1977. He has been principal investigator of research projects in knowledge engineering pattern recognition and heuristic problem-solving. Efforts include the development of a multi-temporal multispectral classifier for identifying graincrops using LANDSAT satellite imagery data for NASA. Also as a member of the research team for a NCI study with Baylor College of Medicine and NASA he helped develop techniques for detection of carcinoma using multispectral microphotometer scans of lung tissue. He established and became technical director of the AI Laboratory for Ford Aerospace where he developed expert scheduling modeling and knowledge acquisition systems for NASA. Since joining Unisys in 1985 he has led the development of object-oriented programming environments blackboard architectures data fusion techniques using neural networks and intelligent data base systems. Douglas E. Barton:is manager of Logistics Information Systems for Unisys in Reston Virginia. He earned his B.A. degree in computer science from the College of William and Mary in 1978 and did postgraduate work in London as a Drapers Company scholar. Since joining Unisys in 1981 his work has concentrated on program management and software engineering of large scale data base management systems and design and implementation of knowledge-based systems in planning and logistics. As chairman of the Logistics Data Subcommittee of the National Security Industrial Association (NSIA) he led an industry initiative which examined concepts in knowledge-based systems in military logistics. His responsibilities also include evaluation development and tailoring of software engineering standards and procedures for data base and knowledge-based systems. He is currently program manager of the Navigation Information Management System which provides support to the Fleet Ballistic Missile Progr

A valuable technique during concept development is rapid prototyping of software for key design components. This approach is particularly useful when the optimum design approach is not readily apparent or several known alternatives need to be rapidly evaluated. A problem inherent in rapid prototyping is the lack of a "target system" with which to interface. Some alternatives are to develop test driver libraries, integrate the prototype with an existing working simulator, or build one for the specific problem. This paper presents a unique approach to concept development using rapid prototyping for concept development and scenario-based simulation for concept verification. The rapid prototyping environment, derived from artificial intelligence technology, is based on a blackboard architecture. The rapid prototype simulation capability is provided through an object-oriented modeling environment. It is shown how both simulation and blackboard technologies are used collectively to rapidly gain insight into a tenacious problem. A specific example will be discussed where this approach was used to evolve the logic of a mission controller for an autonomous underwater vehicle.

DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND MODERNIZATION OF SHIPS WITH THE SHIPBOARD DATA MULTIPLEX SYSTEM (SDMS)

He served three years as a Naval Engineering Officer aboard an Aircraft Carrier and a Minesweeper and has nineteen years technical experience in shipboard navigation underwater target and SDMS projects for the Navy. He is currently a Program Manager in the Autonetics Marine Systems Division Rockwell International where his primary assignment is the development of advanced concepts and applications of SDMS to Navy programs. He has published several technical papers. was elected to four Scholastic Honorary Societies and was the recipient of a NROTC Scholarship. Mr. A.P. Bourette Manager Systems Applications Autonetics Marine Systems Division. received his B.S. degree in Mathematical Physics from Long Beach State University. He began his career with a Computer Analysis Unit. performing tasks related to computer application. programming and interfacing. He has made significant contributions to the Central Computer Complex approach adopted for the SSN-688 Combat System and has performed inertial systems engineering efforts on the MK2 SINS for the POSEIDON Program. He spent some time in the Washington D.C. area providing technical expertise to various Navy organizations. Upon his return he soon was selected to manage the Systems Applications organization at Rockwell International. This organization is primarily responsible for the Shipboard Application of SDMS. He has directed several application studies showing the significant advantages associated with multiplexing. Recently. he provided the technical direction for the FY80 SSN SDMS Preliminary Design Phase.

Rockwell International is currently under Navy contract to fabricate the Engineering Development Model (EDM) of the Shipboard Data Multiplex System (SDMS) for general data transfer aboard surface ships and submarines. The application of SDMS significantly reduces hardware such as cables, switchboards, and Signal Data Converters (SDC), and it provides the capability to add many desired features which are currently not practicable. In applying SDMS to a specific ship, a massive amount of signal data must be considered. The Application Design Automation Program (ADAP) is a set of computer programs that have been developed to accomplish this task. ADAP com bines signal population data, ships configuration data, and SDMS hardware characteristics to produce an SDMS configuration layout together with documentation necessary to analyze, evaluate, and implement the system. Specific outputs include hardware requirements, system layout, and interface requirements including wire list information. The Timing, Event and Load Simulation (TELS) Program simulates SDMS and provides performance data (system capacity, throughput rate, transport delays) for any system configuration. Conventional SDCs can be elimianted from Navy shipboard systems when SDMS is used. SDMS provides the necessary data distribution, signal conversion, and computer interface. In addition, many functions of the conventional switchboards can be performed within SDMS, thus reducing the size or eliminating conventional switchboards. Very small switch-bomb will provide the necessary control of data distribution. With SDMS, an automatic and continuous Noise and Vibration Monitoring (NVM) capability is readily available. The automated NVM function will enhance the safety, operation, and maintenance of the ship. Problems with machinery or excessive self-noise generation will be detected much sooner, and corrective action implemented on a timely basis.

COMPUTERS - A BLESSING OR A CURSE

作者： CHRISTOP.CA THE AUTHOR is Vice President of Technology and Manufacturing for Sperry Rand Corporation's Univac Federal Systems Division St. Paul Minnesota. He holds a B. S. degree in Management Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Christopher joined Univac in St. Paul in 1956 later moving to Division headquarters in suburban Philadelphia as Director of Operational Services and Planning. He became Director of Procurement and Administrative Services. Before returning to the Federal Systems Division in his present capacity he was general manager of the Univac Division operations in Utica-Ilion New York. In his present position Mr. Christopher is responsible for engineering and programming factory operations (manufacturing) procurement advanced development program management and the Federal Systems Division's Salt Lake City Utah operations. In 1969 he was cited as Greater Utica's “Industrial Man of the Year.” Mr. Christopher is a member of the Society for the Advancement of Management and the Electronics Industries Association.

The benefits of data system computers to the Navy to date are developed to highlight the blessings. Both achievements and future requirements are discussed. The problems attendant on achievement of potential advantages of data system computers, and the penalties of failure to liquidate these liabilities constitute the discussion of the curse of computerizations. Since both the potentials and liabilities of computers go forward hand-in-hand, the argument is made that computers can be a blessing to the degree that the liabilities are liquidated. Some practical suggestions as to liquidating the critical liabilities are offered from the point of view of industry to assist in attaining the potential of computers and data systems in support of the Navy's missions, roles, and objectives.

He earned a fleet appointment to the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned an ensign in 1951. He is currently the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Surface Warfare). Following graduation from the Naval Academy VAdm. Metcalf served as engineering officer then operations officer in USSWatts(DD-567). Following a tour as gunnery and missile officer on the staff of Commander Cruiser Division Six he commanded USSKing County(AG-157). Subsequent sea commands were USSWestchester County(LST-1167) commander Landing Division Ninety-Two and USSBradley(FF-1041). Follow-on sea commands were Commander Destroyer Squadron Thirty-Three Commander Naval Surface Group Mid-Pacific Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Eight/Battle Group Two United States Sixth Fleet. His most recent assignment was as Commander Second Fleet/Commander Strike Fleet Atlantic/Commander Joint Task Force 120 in which VAdm. Metcalf commanded joint U.S. forces during the successful rescue of U.S. citizens from Grenada. VAdm. Metcalf's assignments ashore have included instructor in ordnance and gunnery at the U. S. Naval Academy and a tour at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in the Office of Promotion Plans. He served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Advanced Research and Development Center in Bangkok Thailand. In the Office of the Chief of Naval Operatins he was head of the Planning Branch of the Programming Division. Returning to the Bureau of Naval Personnel VAdm. Metcalf served as depty to the Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel for Personnel Planning and Programming and then as assistant chief of Naval Personnel for Financial Management and Management Information.
