Laboratory study of the effects of moisture content on heat transfer and combustion efficiency of three biomass cook stoves

The effect of wood moisture content on the performance and emissions of biomass-fired stoves was assessed using the laboratory-based water boiling test. This test yielded a number of performance indicators (time to boil water, specific fuel consumption and energy efficiency) when the stove was operated at both high and low power. When combined with emission measurements, combustion efficiency was investigated as well. This paper presents an integrated efficiency evaluation of the traditional open fire, an Aprovecho rocket stove from China and a "skirt" stove which were all tested each at 5%, 15% and 30% moisture content (wet basis) of wood. Results showed that an increase in moisture content increased efficiency up to a point. Extremely dry or over-wet fuel inhibited combustion efficiency. Overall, the type of stove exhibited a stronger effect on the total emissions than did the moisture level in the fuel. © 2008 International Energy Initiative, Inc.

He attended Duke University graduating in May 1974 with a bachelor of science in zoology. He was commissioned in the Navy in May 1974 through the NROTC Program at Duke. Rear Adm. Hamilton's sea tours include electronics material officer and combat information center officer in USS Hawkins (DD 873) (1974 to 1976) fire control officer and missile officer in USS Coontz (DDG 40) (1976 to1978) operations officer in USS Callaghan (DDG 994) (1981 to 1984) executive officer USS Fox (CG 33) (1986 to 1988) and commanding officer USS O'Brien (DD 975) (1991 to 1993). Rear Adm. Hamilton's shore tours include anti-submarine warfare program analyst and administrative assistant to director Program Resource Appraisal Division (OP-91) Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (1984 to 1986) head Aegis Destroyer Section (OP-355F) and financial coordinator Aegis Cruiser Destroyer Branch Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (1988 to 1990) and military staff specialist for naval war-fare in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition and Technology) (1994 to 1996). In May 1996 Rear Adm. Hamilton became program manager for the arsenal ship which was designed to provide massed precision fires in support of Fleet commander's warfighting requirements. After completing the first two design phases and passing significant acquisition reform lessons learned to the DD 21 Program Office Rear Adm. Hamilton closed down the Arsenal Ship Program in March 1998. From April 1998 to February 2000 Rear Adm. Hamilton served as deputy for Fleet in the Program Executive Office Theater Surface Combatants (PEO TSC-F). In this position he was responsible for Fleet Introduction and Lifetime Support of 120 surface combatants (DDG 51 CG 47 DDG 993 DD 963 FFG 7). Rear Adm. The challenges which stood as an obstacle to the naval force development are discussed. The main challenge in the national security environment is to be virtually available anywhere in the world at the behest of the national command. It is observed that in surface warefare coast guard has the most applicability and expansion of their surveillance area will help in engaging other vessels away from the manned platform. It is also observed that the relationship with mission modularity and the growth between the coast guard and the navy has attracted interest among the international community.

Uses daytime and nighttime AVHRR data to characterize terrain environments. The 3-D terrain view, draped on the CC image of three AVHRR derived bands, daytime vegetation temperature index (VTI), day-nighttime temperature difference (DT) and LSTn-derived elevation (ELE), illustrated vegetation landscapes in which can be used for forest degradation on fragile highland and monitoring topographic-based land uses.

Engineering the environmentally sound warship for the twenty-first century

He is a 1993 graduate of the Naval Construction and Engineering Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a naval engineers degree and master of science in mechanical engineering. His interest in environmental issues predates his undergraduate studies at Syracuse Universityl State University of New Ymk College of Environmental Science and Fmestry where he received a bachelm of science degree in fmest engineering from the School of Environmental and Resource Engineering. LCdx Markle has qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer and in submarines through the Engineering Duty Dolphin Program he is a member of the Acquisition Professional Community and a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College Advanced Program Managers Course. The past twenty-five years has been marked by the introduction ed marine environmental regulations that have had a profound effect on how ships are designed, built and operated. Ships being designed and built today must accommodate not only current regulations but anticipate those enacted over their thirty to fifty year life cycles. U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, Office of Environmental, Safety and Health (CNO N45) has articulated a vision for the Environmentally Sound Warship of the Twenty-first Century. This vision incorporates the "Sense of Congress" for a naval ship designed to operate in full compliance with environmental regulations worldwide. The task of the Navy engineering team is to translate this vision into reality;a ship capable of prevailing in time of war and able to conduct operations in all areas of the globe, unencumbered by special procedures for environmental compliance. The keys to this warship design are the early integration of environmentally sound principles, materials, and processes into the ship acquisition process;minimization of both hazardous materials and generation of post shipboard consumer waste during operation;adaptation of integrated systems to reduce the volume of wastes and enhance processing efficiency;reduced manpower requirements;and crew indoctrination in environmental protection.

A multi-scale spatial ecological model of a wet sclerophyllous forest subject to recurrent fires is presented. The model is specified in a Discrete Event Systems framework (DEVS) (Zeigler, 1990) interfaced with a Geographic Information System (GIS), and includes the ability to simulate landscape dynamics at several levels of resolution simultaneously. This is achieved by encoding a modular hierarchical representation of the forest landscape components into a set of nested, interconnected, and spatially referenced dynamic models. The results of the landscape dynamics simulations are displayed as sequences of maps through time, illustrating the potential of this modeling methodology for dealing with complex hierarchical structures that operate at several spatial and temporal resolutions.
