The need to apply a knowledge based artificial intelligence system is driven by the complexity of the space shuttle propellant loading process and by the need to evaluate the hardware's performance;both tasks are man-power intensive and difficult to program using standard techniques. The Propulsion Advisory Tool (PAT) identifies both actual and potential system failures and provides pertinent data required for anomaly resolution. The knowledge base is coded using a natural language interface and is developed based on existing requirements documents and knowledge captured from experts working in the propulsion arena. The development and implementation of the PAT knowledge base applies a hybrid methodology utilizing commercial off-the-shelf tools and custom computer code. Each "real" hardware component is modeled by a virtual object that is defined within the knowledge base architecture. These objects have characteristics that correspond directly to the real component. The conclusions required to establish component/system status are based upon several levels of knowledge. Specific electrical circuits have been modeled within the G2 knowledge base to show "live" wires along with active objects that represent the various talkbacks within the circuit. Thus, the systems engineer can directly relate the data provided by the computer with the paperbased circuit drawings. The PAT kn owledge based expert system continues to be an essential part of Boeing North American's Integrated Health Management philosophy. © 1997, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

He holds a doctorate in engineering. Among his research interests are signal theory optical communications theory coding theory and data compression algorithms. In 1988 he received a Shinohara Commemorative Science Encouragement Prize and in 1992 a Best Paper Award. He is the author of the bookIntroduction to Record Data Compression Algorithms. He is a member of the Measurement Control Society and the Society for Information Theory and Its Applications.

Cryptology provides the technological basis for guaranteed network security. In the field of business, to guarantee the security of information, everyone needs easy-to-use cryptology. Starting with the announcement by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards of the DES cryptosystem and the proposal by NTT of the FEAL cryptosystem, secret-key cryptographic algorithms have been published, involution-type block cryptosystems which use secret key to encipher 64 bits of plain text as 64 bits of cipher text [2, 3, 9, 10, 12]. NTT has proposed the one-way function MAP, which is also an involution-type transform. In this paper, we study a new cryptanalytic method for involution-type cryptosystems and show by example that it can be applied practically in a ciphertext-only attack on the one-way function MAP. For an involution-type cryptosystem, by increasing the amount of construction in the data-randomization phase and by increasing the size of the secret key, we can guarantee the computational security by preventing the estimation of the secret key. However, if we study the properties of the function used in the design of the data-randomization phase, by specifying input/output values of the function which are independent of the secret key, it may be possible to use the inverse function [11] to calculate the secret key. This method is called the intermediate cipher method. The intermediate cipher method differs from previous methods in the small quantity of data required for breaking.

There is a very large demand for basic telephone service in developing nations, and remote parts of industrialized nations, which cannot be met by conventional wireline and cellular systems. This is the world's largest unserved market. We describe a system which uses recent advances in active phased arrays, fast-packet switching technology, adaptive routeing, and light spacecraft technology, in part based on the work of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and on recently-declassified work done on the Strategic Defense Initiative, to make it possible to address this market with a global telephone network based on a large low-Earth-orbit constellation of identical satellites. A telephone utility can use such a network to provide the same modern basic and enhanced telephone services offered by telephone utilities in the urban centres of fully-industrialized nations. Economies of scale permit capital and operating costs per subscriber low enough to provide a service to all subscribers, regardless of location, at prices comparable to the same services in urban areas of industrialized nations, while generating operating profits great enough to attract the capital needed for its construction. The bandwidth needed to support the capacity needed to gain these economies of scale requires that the system use K(alpha)-band frequencies. This choice of frequencies places unusual constraints on the network design, and in particular forces the use of a large number of satellites. Global demand for basic and enhanced telephone service is great enough to support at least three networks of the size described herein. The volume of advanced components, and services such as launch services, required to construct and replace these networks is sufficient to propel certain industries to market leadership positions in the early 21st Century.

A fixpoint semantics for ordered logic

We develop semantics for a logic, called ordered logic (OL), which models the most important aspects of object-oriented programming languages, such as object identity, multiple inheritance and defaults. The logic is based on a partially ordered structure of logical theories, which play the role of objects. OL is non-monotonic under the natural modeltheoretic semantics.A non-deterministic procedure is defined that has all models as fixpoints. It is shown that, for a well-behaved subclass of theories, this procedure can be used to generate exactly the set of 'preferred' models, where preference is based on the lack of 'assumptions'.Classical logic programs with negation by failure are special cases of OL theories. From the above we can then derive a syntactic characterization of logic programs with stable models. © 1990 Oxford University Press.

The authors present an overview of the functionality and the architecture of KIWIS, a federated knowledge-base environment based on deduction in an object-oriented framework. A KIWIS environment consists of a number of participating KIWIS systems, each of which may be connected to one or more external databases. The architecture of each component system is composed of a number of layers that incrementally add power to this system. The kernel of a system consists of layers 1 through 4 and creates the 'personal knowledge machine' environment. The other layers (5 and 6) act as a 'window on the world', enriching the local system knowledge with external knowledge.< >

Logic programming is being used extensively by Artificial Intelligence researchers to solve problems including natural language processing and expert systems. These languages, of which Prolog is the most widely used, promise to revolutionize software engineering, but much greater performance is needed. Researchers have demonstrated the applicability of neural network models to the solution of certain NP-complete problems, but these methods are not obviously applicable to the execution of logic programs. This paper outlines the use of neural networks in four aspects of the logic program execution cycle, and discusses results of a simulation of three of these. Four neural network functional units are described, called the substitution agent, the clause filter, the structure processor, and the heuristics generator, respectively. Simulation results suggest that the system described may provide several orders of magnitude improvement in execution speed for large logic programs. However, practical implementation of the proposed architecture will require the application of optical computing techniques due to the large number of neurons required, and the need for massive, adaptive connectivity. © 1988 SPIE. A one-dimensional systolic geometry processor (SGP) which is useful in image processing and pattern recognition is described. The geometry processor can be used to enhance processing speed and throughput of the host computer by working as an attached processor. Mr. Yanus is presently the manager of naval systems engineering in the Computer Aided Engineering Department of the Plant Engineering Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. His prior experience includes 19 years at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory where he performed assignments of increasing responsibility in design analysis development and procurement of nuclear reactor components for naval applications. As the manager of reactor mechanical design he was responsible for the mechanical design of theNimitzclass reactor components and control drive mechanism technology development. Mr. Yanus is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Glen H. Nickodemusgraduated from Michigan State University in 1964 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He joined the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Corporation in July of the same year. A master of science degree in civil engineering was obtained from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1973. In 1969 Mr. Nickodemus joined the Advanced Reactors Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he performed design and structural analysis functions for the development of the Fast Flux Test Facility and Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant (CRBRP). As manager of CRBRP reactor engineering stress analysis he was responsible for the reactor vessel internals closure head control rod drivelines and miscellaneous guard vessels and head access area components. He is currently the manager of software development for the Computer Aided Engineering Department of the Plant Engineering Division. This paper describes a computer integrated engineering system for design and life cycle management of weapons systems, ships and other multidisciplined systems. All engineering data are stored in a central engineering database. Individual application databases define and process information necessary for specific discipline evaluations. Interface modules between the application databases and the engineering database ensure that the entered data are complete, consistent, compatible, and in compliance with requirements. Conflicts are immediately identified and efficiently resolved. Implementation of the system improves design quality and reduces costs by minimizing the number of design iterations, reducing the effort to implement changes, providing effective storage and retrieval, and reducing the need for ship checks prior to modifications and alterations.

Germany and an M.S. in naval architecture and marine engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. He then joined Litton Ship Systems to work on the DD-963 and LHA programs. He was principal research scientist at Hydronautics and technical director with Designers and Planners before forming in 1976 together with S. Glatz and J. Drewry Advanced Marine where he is responsible for engineering and technical matters on behalf of the corporation. Joseph Koelbel: a senior naval architect at Advanced Marine Enterprises Inc. has for many years specialized in the design of high-speed rough-water boats including a record-setting race boat passenger boats and patrol boats such as the CPIC and the PBM. He received special recognition for his contributions to and editing of the Planing Concept Volume of the Advanced Naval Vehicles Concept Evaluation Study. He is a member of ASNE SNAME (past chairman planing boats panel of the Hydrodynamics Committee) and ABYC. He is the author of a number of published papers on small-craft design. Ray Sheldon:is the head of computer applications at Advanced Marine Enterprises Inc. where he directs activities in computer-aided ship design software development and ship performance prediction. Previously at the Hydronautics Ship Model Basin he was involved in nearly all aspects of ship hydrodynamics and the development and refinement of test methodologies and equipment. Mr. Sheldon is a 1973 graduate of Webb Institute of Naval Architecture (B.S. naval architecture and marine engineering) a member of ASNE and an associate member of SNAME. He is the author of several published papers concerning ship design and experimental methods.

Key aspects of the design development of a capable yet affordable high performance craft are addressed. These aspects include the development of mission requirements, the rationale for major design decisions, performance capabilities, and system and subsystem selection. The superior performance of the design, as demonstrated by an extensive model test program, led to the decision to develop a family of advanced fast patrol boat concepts. Selected family members are also briefly introduced. The paper, furthermore, demonstrates the successful integration of many major computer-aided design (CAD) programs currently in use for U.S. Navy ship design.
