This report summarizes the proceedings of a workshop discussion session presentation and visualization of aspects relating to duplicated, copied, or cloned code. The main outcomes of the working session were: (a) a realization that two researchers had independently generated very similar methods for browsing and visualization clone "clusters", and (b) a list of questions for visualization, particularly in relation to how the "proximity" of clones may relate to interest in the clone. © Duplication, Redundancy, and Similarity in software *** rights reserved.

This talk provides a personal perspective on the evolution of empirical software engineering. The evolution has included the focus of the studies, e.g., from attempting to demonstrate the effectiveness of various processes to the building of knowledge around a domain or a set of processes. The study designs have changed from strictly quantitative studies to all forms of controlled experiments, quasi-experiments, preexperimental designs, case studies, field studies, and focus group activities. There has been recognition of the importance and influence of context variables and the domain in interpreting the results of studies. The issue of meta-analysis has become more important and is still an elusive goal. A community of empiricists has evolved that allows for the replication of studies leading to the identification of context variables. But there still does not exist a community consensus on the right ways to build bodies of knowledge or a "blessed" set of approaches. We argue over what is appropriate evidence when we review papers. We struggle with the concept of experimental replication. We do not know how to break an empirical study into significant small enough chunks for publication in the various standard forums. We have not convinced the software engineering community that empirical study is a necessary or even valuable research paradigm for the field. What other problems that remain? How can they be solved? What will the future hold for empirical study? This talk will address these issues and propose a possible path towards a mature empirical software engineering discipline.

This paper presents quadratic integer programming as a modeling technique to formulate the analytical models for financial markets. Financial market analysis has been a promising area of research for the last three decades. The proposed models aim to cater for several scenarios for analysis and prediction of future trends in capital, gold and currency markets. These models after translation into hyper graphs would be solved through clustering (data mining). The implementation of this research would be the basis of a decision support system. It may prove to be an analysis tool to evaluate the economic status of a country statistically in a more accurate manner

A new distributed arithmetic has been applied to the 1-D DCT to produce a low power, high throughput architecture. In this paper, we apply NEDA to the even-odd decomposition matrices of the 8times8 forward and inverse DCT. We show that, with the proposed approach, the number of adders required for the adder array for the forward DCT and the inverse DCT is fewer than required if NEDA is applied directly to the 8times8 DCT and IDCT matrices. This reduction results in power savings, without decreasing the throughput. Also, for the inverse DCT, the number of adder stages is reduced, resulting in faster decoding

The decorrelator is a linear transform that can be used in multi-user detection receivers in cellular networks to increase the capacity of the base-station receiver. It has been shown that the decorrelation operation can be performed using iterative methods that do not require computation-intensive inverse matrix computation. We propose a high throughput systolic array architecture for the decorrelator receiver, which meets the throughput demands of 3G mobile communications systems.

Online multi-participant virtual-world systems have attracted significant interest from the Internet community but are hindered by their inability to efficiently support interactivity for a large number of participants. Current solutions divide a large virtual-world into a few mutually exclusive zones, with each zone controlled by a different server, and/or limit the number of participants per server or per virtual-world. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems are known to provide excellent scalability in a networked environment (one peer is introduced to the system by each participant), however current P2P applications can only provide file sharing and other forms of relatively simple data communications. In this paper, we present a generic 3D virtual-world application that runs on a P2P network with no central administration or server. Two issues are addressed by this paper to enable such a spatial application on a P2P network. First, we demonstrate how to index and query a 3D space on a dynamic distributed network. Second, we show how to build such a complex application from the ground level of a P2P routing algorithm. Our work leads to new directions for the development of online virtual-worlds that we believe can be used for many government, industry, and public domain applications. Copyright 2004 ACM.

Multi-user detection is a paradigm that is used to enhance the performance of the receivers in cellular networks in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER), capacity and near-far effect. Parallel Interference Cancellation is the choice for most current multi-user detection receivers because of its simplicity in implementation and good qualitative parameters. Decorrelator-based Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) has been proposed to improve the performance of the PIC receiver. In this paper, we make an important observation about the determination of the Decorrelator that makes it feasible for it to be used in conjunction with PIC in the base-station receiver.

For 25 years the NASA/GSFC software engineering Laboratory (SEL) has been a major resource in software process improvement activities. But due to a changing climate at NASA, agency reorganization, and budget cuts, the SEL has lost much of its impact. In this paper we describe the history of the SEL and give some lessons learned on what we did right, what we did wrong, and what others can learn from our experiences. We briefly describe the research that was conducted by the SEL, describe how we evolved our understanding of software process improvement, and provide a set of lessons learned and hypotheses that should enable future groups to learn from and improve on our quarter century of experiences.

Survey of reduced workload and crewing strategies for ocean patrol vessels

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.
