A simple geometric shaping method is proposed for optical wireless communication systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) from an information-theoretic perspective. Constellations consisting of equiprobable levels with exponential-like distribution are obtained, which possesses asymptotic optimality in the sense that the high-SNR capacity of average-intensity constrained optical intensity channel can be approached by such constellations with increasing size. All 2b levels (b ∈ N) of the obtained constellation can be represented by a basic level and b + 2 bits, thereby reducing the required resolution of the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) without affecting the asymptotic optimality. Achievable information rate evaluations verify the asymptotic optimality. As an example, error performance results of a simple 16-level LDPC coded modulation scheme show that a shaping gain of 0.65 dB can be obtained by applying the proposed constellation design. This method can also be applied to more specific IM/DD channel models, since it only requires a near-optimal continuous input distribution. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

The task of detecting fraud in credit card transactions is crucial to ensure the security and stability of a financial system, as well as to enforce customer confidence in digital payment systems. Historically, credit card companies have used rule-based approaches to detect fraudulent transactions, but these have proven inadequate due to the complexity of fraud strategies and have been replaced by much more powerful solutions based on machine learning or deep learning algorithms. Despite significant progress, the current approaches to fraud detection suffer from a number of limitations: for example, it is unclear whether some transaction features are more effective than others in discriminating fraudulent transactions, and they often neglect possible correlations among transactions, even though they could reveal illicit behaviour. In this paper, we propose a novel credit card fraud detection (CCFD) method based on a transaction behaviour-based hierarchical gated network. First, we introduce a feature-oriented extraction module capable of identifying key features from original transactions, and such analysis is effective in revealing the behavioural characteristics of fraudsters. Second, we design a transaction-oriented extraction module capable of capturing the correlation between users' historical and current transactional behaviour. Such information is crucial for revealing users' sequential behaviour patterns. Our approach, called transactional-behaviour-based hierarchical gated network model (TbHGN), extracts two types of new transactional features, which are then combined in a feature interaction module to learn the final transactional representations used for CCFD. We have conducted extensive experiments on a real-world credit card transaction dataset with an increase in average F1 between 1.42% and 6.53% and an improvement in average AUC between 0.63% and 2.78% over the state of the art. © 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. The emerging neurorehabilitation technology, Brain-computer Interface (BCI), provides a novel prospect for stroke recovery. However, decoding brain activity during the movement present substantial challenges, and feature extraction is crutial to build a better decoder. In this study the CEBRA method were employed to extract features first based on electroencephalogram(EEG) data during Motor Execution(ME) and Motor lmagery (Ml) tasks for 20 participants (including 10 stroke patients). The results revealed that, in MI tasks, CEBRA-RF (Random Forests) achieved an average classification accuracy of 91.33%, with an average F1-score of 91.19%, and CEBRA-SVM (Support Vector Machine) achieved an average classification accuracy of 91.32%, with an average F1-score of 90.83%. BeamVQ: Beam Search with Vector Quantization to Mitigate Data Scarcity in Physical Spatiotemporal Forecasting

In practice, physical spatiotemporal forecasting can suffer from data scarcity, because collecting large-scale data is non-trivial, especially for extreme events. Hence, we propose BeamVQ, a novel probabilistic framework to realize iterative self-training with new self-ensemble strategies, achieving better physical consistency and generalization on extreme events. Following any base forecasting model, we can encode its deterministic outputs into a latent space and retrieve multiple codebook entries to generate probabilistic outputs. Then BeamVQ extends the beam search from discrete spaces to the continuous state spaces in this field. We can further employ domain-specific metrics (e.g., Critical Success Index for extreme events) to filter out the top-k candidates and develop the new self-ensemble strategy by combining the high-quality candidates. The self-ensemble can not only improve the inference quality and robustness but also iteratively augment the training datasets during continuous self-training. Consequently, BeamVQ realizes the exploration of rare but critical phenomena beyond the original dataset. Comprehensive experiments on different benchmarks and backbones show that BeamVQ consistently reduces forecasting MSE (up to 39%), enhancing extreme events detection and proving its effectiveness in handling data scarcity. Nine-degrees-of-freedom (9-DoF) object pose and size estimation is crucial for enabling augmented reality and robotic manipulation. Category-level methods have received extensive research attention due to their potential for generalization to intra-class unknown objects. However, these methods require manual collection and labeling of large-scale real-world training data. To address this problem, we introduce a diffusion-based paradigm for domain-generalized category-level 9-DoF object pose estimation. Our motivation is to leverage the latent generalization ability of the diffusion model to address the domain generalization challenge in object pose estimation. This entails training the model exclusively on rendered synthetic data to achieve generalization to real-world scenes. We propose an effective diffusion model to redefine 9-DoF object pose estimation from a generative perspective. Our model does not require any 3D shape priors during training or inference. By employing the Denoising Diffusion Implicit Model, we demonstrate that the reverse diffusion process can be executed in as few as 3 steps, achieving near real-time performance. Finally, we design a robotic grasping system comprising both hardware and software components. Through comprehensive experiments on two benchmark datasets and the real-world robotic system, we show that our method achieves state-of-the-art domain generalization performance.

The phase retrieval (PR) problem involves recovering a signal from amplitude-only measurements and has been extensively studied in various physical measurement and signal processing systems. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the quantized phase retrieval (QPR) problem, where the observed amplitude is quantized to binary values. The existing studies have focused on the noiseless case. In this paper, we address a robust QPR problem that accounts for both quantization and noise. We formulate the robust QPR problem using maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE), which results in a non-convex and challenging optimization problem due to the complexity of its likelihood function. To obtain a high-quality solution, we develop an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm combined with the Wirtinger flow, allowing us to convert the problem into a more manageable form at each iteration. Our method is implemented on both randomly generated synthetic data and image reconstruction tasks. The results demonstrate that our approach significantly enhances signal recovery performance under the combined effects of quantization and noise. Additionally, the proposed method exhibits better runtime efficiency compared to existing approaches.

Sight is one of the major senses that allows people to travel safely, freely, and independently of others. In their daily life, visually impaired people are confronting challenging tasks such as reading or writing. Navigation and direction finding, particularly in the unfamiliar environment, are remaining as one of the main issues for visually impaired (VI) individuals. Several ways have been emerged to help VI orientation and mobility such as electronic orientation aids which can be further studied and developed. This work aims to improve VI navigation by proposing a new tactile interface that will be designed and implemented with the use of vibrators and Arduino board. The proposed interface targets to increase the quality of life and independence for VI. VARIATIONAL AUTO-ENCODER BASED SOLUTIONS TO INTERACTIVE DYNAMIC INFLUENCE DIAGRAMS

Addressing multiagent decision problems in AI, especially those involving collaborative or competitive agents acting concurrently in a partially observable and stochastic environment, remains a formidable challenge. While Interactive Dynamic Influence Diagrams (I-DIDs) have offered a promising decision framework for such problems, they encounter limitations when the subject agent encounters unknown behaviors exhibited by other agents that are not explicitly modeled within the I-DID. This can lead to sub-optimal responses from the subject agent. In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven approach that utilizes an encoder-decoder architecture, particularly a variational autoencoder, to enhance I-DID solutions. By integrating a perplexity-based tree loss function into the optimization algorithm of the variational autoencoder, coupled with the advantages of Zig-Zag One-Hot encoding and decoding, we generate potential behaviors of other agents within the I-DID that are more likely to contain their true behaviors, even from limited interactions. This new approach enables the subject agent to respond more appropriately to unknown behaviors, thus improving its decision quality. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in two well-established problem domains, highlighting its potential for handling multi-agent decision problems with unknown behaviors.
