Large-Range and High-Sensitivity Displacement Sensing Based on Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer Assisted Microwave Photonic Filter

Displacement is a pivotal physical parameter, and advancements in displacement sensor technology have enabled the creation of a diverse array of physical and mechanical sensors through seamless integration with mechanical transducers. In this study, we introduce a displacement sensing technique leveraging an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) assisted microwave photonic filter. By translating displacement-induced variations in the EFPI’s optical reflection into peak frequency shifts within its frequency response, we achieve large-dynamic-range displacement measurements with outstanding signal quality and demodulation ease. Proof-of-concept demonstrations showcase a substantial 5 mm range with a remarkable sensitivity of 1.148 GHz/mm, achieved using a basic single-mode fiber-based EFPI with a movable external mirror. Besides, nm-scale displacement monitoring is experimentally validated through a phase-measurement approach. Notably, the sensitivity and dynamic range can be tailored by adjusting the microwave photonic filter system’s parameter, i.e., the dispersion parameter of the dispersive element in the system. Furthermore, we introduce a strategy to enhance the dynamic range further by employing a virtual frequency down-conversion technique with an additional interferometer. This proposed technique opens avenues for developing a series of high-sensitivity and broad operating-range physical and mechanical sensors based on a simplified EFPI measurement configuration. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Multi-modal Data based Semi-Supervised Learning for Vehicle Positioning

In this paper, a multi-modal data based semisupervised learning (SSL) framework that jointly use channel state information (CSI) data and RGB images for vehicle positioning is designed. In particular, an outdoor positioning system where the vehicle locations are determined by a base station (BS) is considered. The BS equipped with several cameras can collect a large amount of unlabeled CSI data and a small number of labeled CSI data of vehicles, and the images taken by cameras. Although the collected images contain partial information of vehicles (i.e. azimuth angles of vehicles), the relationship between the unlabeled CSI data and its azimuth angle, and the distances between the BS and the vehicles captured by images are both unknown. Therefore, the images cannot be directly used as the labels of unlabeled CSI data to train a positioning model. To exploit unlabeled CSI data and images, a SSL framework that consists of a pretraining stage and a downstream training stage is proposed. In the pretraining stage, the azimuth angles obtained from the images are considered as the labels of unlabeled CSI data to pretrain the positioning model. In the downstream training stage, a small sized labeled dataset in which the accurate vehicle positions are considered as labels is used to retrain the model. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the positioning error by up to 30% compared to a baseline where the model is not pretrained. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Icebergs threaten the navigation safety of ships in the Arctic, small icebergs are difficult to detect in harsh sea conditions. Timely detection of these targets is crucial for aiding ships in navigational decisions. Infrared detection technology is an effective solution for detecting icebergs. Due to the low contrast of iceberg infrared images and severe sea wave clutter, current methods can not suit iceberg detection tasks well. In this article, we propose an Adaptive Multi-scale Enhanced Interaction Network (AMEINet) and construct the Single-Frame Infrared Iceberg Target Dataset (SFIIT). First, the Global Contrast Enhance Module (GCE) is designed, which adaptively enhances the image with the target as the center, and reconstructs the potential features submerged by low contrast. Then, to obtain rich features, the Boundary Feature Extraction Module (BFE) and Gated Context Feature Extraction Module (GCFE) are designed to extract target information at different levels. BEF adopts a new computation method to obtain the edge contour structures without edge GroundTruth supervision. GCFE effectively controls redundant information transmission through the gate mechanism and jump connection, filtering out the false alarms and miss detection caused by strong wave clutter. Finally, experiments on the publicized SIRST dataset and proposed SFIIT dataset show that the proposed method can achieve superior performances in infrared iceberg detection. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

Diffusion-Driven Semantic Communication for Generative Models with Bandwidth Constraints

Diffusion models have been extensively utilized in AI-generated content (AIGC) in recent years, thanks to the superior generation capabilities. Combining with semantic communications, diffusion models are used for tasks such as denoising, data reconstruction, and content generation. However, existing diffusion-based generative models do not consider the stringent bandwidth limitation, which limits its application in wireless communication. This paper introduces a diffusion-driven semantic communication framework with advanced VAE-based compression for bandwidth-constrained generative model. Our designed architecture utilizes the diffusion model, where the signal transmission process through the wireless channel acts as the forward process in diffusion. To reduce bandwidth requirements, we incorporate a downsampling module and a paired upsampling module based on a variational auto-encoder with reparameterization at the receiver to ensure that the recovered features conform to the Gaussian distribution. Furthermore, we derive the loss function for our proposed system and evaluate its performance through comprehensive experiments. Our experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in pixel-level metrics such as peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and semantic metrics like learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS). These enhancements are more profound regarding the compression rates and SNR compared to deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC). © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among female diseases. Since the classification accuracy of pathological images is crucial to the diagnosis of breast cancer, in order to reduce the error of manual diagnosis and improve the automatic classification accuracy of pathological images, this paper proposes a high-accuracy breast cancer classification method based on multi-scale attention mechanism enhanced Res2Net. By constructing a multi-channel residual connection in the residual block, and introducing a convolutional attention mechanism to enhance the feature extraction ability of Res2Net, and using group convolution to replace part of the ordinary convolution. In addition, since the channel information interaction across groups cannot be realized in the group convolution, which reduces the feature extraction ability. In this paper, the channel shuffling operation is used to reorganize the feature maps after the group convolution to achieve the information interaction between different groups. The evaluation results on the BreaKHis dataset show that, the accuracy and precision of the method in this paper have reached 98.5% and 98.9% respectively, in binary classification of histopathological images compared with the benchmark method, and the advantages of recall rate and F1 value are also more obvious. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Smart Grids (SG) rely on Home Area Networks (HAN) and Neighborhood Area Networks (NAN) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol's resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol's effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol's enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.

Explainable Topic-Enhanced Argument Mining from Heterogeneous Sources

Given a controversial target such as "nuclear energy", argument mining aims to identify the argumentative text from heterogeneous sources. Current approaches focus on exploring better ways of integrating the target-associated semantic information with the argumentative text. Despite their empirical successes, two issues remain unsolved: (i) a target is represented by a word or a phrase, which is insufficient to cover a diverse set of target-related subtopics;(ii) the sentence-level topic information within an argument, which we believe is crucial for argument mining, is ignored. To tackle the above issues, we propose a novel explainable topic-enhanced argument mining approach. Specifically, with the use of the neural topic model and the language model, the target information is augmented by explainable topic representations. Moreover, the sentence-level topic information within the argument is captured by minimizing the distance between its latent topic distribution and its semantic representation through mutual learning. Experiments have been conducted on the benchmark dataset in both the in-target setting and the cross-target setting. Lightweight Task-Oriented Semantic Communication Empowered by Large-Scale AI Models

Recent studies have focused on leveraging large-scale artificial intelligence (LAI) models to improve semantic representation and compression capabilities. However, the substantial computational demands of LAI models pose significant challenges for real-time communication scenarios. To address this, this paper proposes utilizing knowledge distillation (KD) techniques to extract and condense knowledge from LAI models, effectively reducing model complexity and computation latency. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of LAI models leads to prolonged inference times during distillation, while their lack of channel awareness compromises the distillation performance. These limitations make standard KD methods unsuitable for task-oriented semantic communication scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a fast distillation method featuring a pre-stored compression mechanism that eliminates the need for repetitive inference, significantly improving efficiency. Furthermore, a channel adaptive module is incorporated to dynamically adjust the transmitted semantic information based on varying channel conditions, enhancing communication reliability and adaptability. In addition, an information bottleneck-based loss function is derived to guide the fast distillation process. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperform baselines in term of task accuracy, model size, computation latency, and training data requirements. © 1967-2012 IEEE.
