Removal of non-metallic inclusions in molten steel is important from the viewpoint of improvement of quality, property and yield of the products. As a removal method of inclusions from molten metal, gas bubble flotation adhering inclusions is well known. Gas bubbling is particularly effective for the removal of fine inclusions. Top-emitting, oxide-confined, polyimide-planarized 980-nm VCSELs with copper-plated heatsinks were fabricated and characterized. Increasing the plated heatsink radius from 0-μm to 4-μm larger than the mesa diameter for lasers with 8-μm oxide aperture diameter reduced the measured thermal impedance, increased the maximum bias current density, and increased the maximum output optical power achieved by a 29%, 37%, and 73%, respectively. VCSELs with oxide aperture diameter and heatsink overlap of 8-μm and 4-μm, respectively, demonstrated 17°C decrease in the internal device temperature (i.e. active region temperature) at the maximum output optical power. Devices with similar mesa diameters of 26-μm and different heatsink overlaps exhibited a threshold bias current and a total series resistance of (630±4%)μA and ~95Ω, respectively.

Double metal-oxide thin film transistor (TFT) for both switch and sensor elements shows high photo current as I light /I dark >10 6 , a mobility of >10cm 2 /Vs and high stability under LCD operation condition. One of the problems for development of industrial controls programs is the availability of the actual equipment to be controlled. Availability of the equipment may be due to project timing, cost issues, and even location. By using a simulation tool, integrated with the control programming environment, the control engineer can test the control program functionality to reduce the amount of time required to commission and deploy the system. Dependent upon the complexity of the system and simulation, diagnostic programs can be developed and tested. Additionally, as new control system capabilities are developed, the corresponding simulation model can be adapted to test those new capabilities. In this paper, we describe the development, use, and validation of an integrated control and simulation tool for an anaerobic digester lab system. Results of the validation tests are discussed, as well as the methods used to develop and deploy the control program. Finally, future work is described to use the capabilities of the control and simulation tool as a formal validation step in the control system design and commissioning.

Humankind has depended for ages on underground water reservoirs for its fresh water needs. But these sources do not always prove to be useful due to the presence of excessive salinity in the water. In this paper, the fabrication of seven solar still designs such as spherical solar still, pyramid solar still, hemispherical solar still, double basin glass solar still, concentrator coupled single slope solar still, tubular solar still and tubular solar still coupled with pyramid solar still and their performance evaluation in converting brackish water into fresh water for drinking are presented. The experiment was constructed and tested during January to May 2011. All the solar stills were operated in the same climatic conditions to analyze the influence of the modifications on the productivity. From the observations, the compound parabolic concentrator-assisted tubular solar still shows the maximum yield.

Using micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies, the authors have developed the world's smallest, lightest, and least power-consuming laser Doppler blood flow meter. Unlike commercial fibre-type blood flow instruments, the new blood flow meter is invulnerable to any movements of the person wearing it and has a wireless transmitter. Utilizing the characteristics of the blood flow meter, the authors attempted to detect dehydration by having a subject simply raise an arm (arm-raising test) with the flow meter attached to a fingertip. Healthy young volunteers (20 men and two women, mean age 22.9, age range 21-27 years) were instructed to perspire in a sauna until they became dehydrated. The target dewatering ratio was 2 per cent, which was calculated from the body weight measured using a weight scale. Four markers were compared: mean blood flow (MBF) before arm-raising, MBF during arm-raising, maximum amplitude (MA) of the pulse wave during arm-raising, and inclination of reflex (IR) wave calculated from the recorded blood flow data for the non-dehydrated (before sauna) and dehydrated (3h after sauna) states in the arm-raising test.
